It's that time of year again. Time to lay out the season and give out hardware to the deserving players of the league while also crushing the dreams of the nearly as deserving players they beat for those awards. It's time to argue. It's time to be subjective, try to be objective, and just generally do your best. Or my best in this case. Here's how it's gonna go. I'm going to give three nominees for each award and tell you why each has a case and then pick my winner. Also of note..I had Arbi do our votes, so I'm not even saying anything here that counts. That said fffft...here we go!
PERFORMANCE OF THE YEAR
This award is for the best single game performance by any player this season. For this I'm going to do a few things right away. If it's an offensive performance and it came against the Legion, Yeti, or Outlaws....it's just not gonna count as much. I'm not saying it won't count at all...just not as much. Likewise if it's a defensive performance and it came against the Yeti or Legion, not as impressive. If you go big against the Wraith or Otter defense or the Wraith, otter, or Outlaw offense, its has much higher merit. Also I'm not including inactives/corpses, although best corpse sounds like a hilarious award. Depending on the amount of alcohol I imbibe as I write, that may get added an its own thing. Sidenote: the entire corpse thing is a really fucking weird statement if you don't know our lingo.
Wallace Stone LB Legion
Week 4 vs Balitmore Hawks
12 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 forced and recovered fumble, 1 pass defenced
King Bronko QB Outlaws
Week 10 vs Yellowknife Wraiths
32/43, 386 Yards, 5 TDs, 0 Ints, 140.3 rating
Jordan Yates RB Otters
Week 8 vs San Jose Sabercats
8 Catches, 161 Yards, 3 Touchdowns
Winner: Jordan Yates
The man destroyed souls that day. Especially since all 3 tds were in one quarter. It was 14-9 when he started his murderous odyssey. Bronko's 5 tds and insane stats are great. But the man is a future Hall of Fame QB and perennial MVP candidate. It's an amazing performance but it's not "murder a team's entire world and salt the Earth beneath them" like Yates. Kudos to Wallace Stone for the best single defensive performance of the year. If Stone gets any help in "Vegas" (don't act like you don't know already) that player is gonna be a DPOY candidate going forward. In the words of the great 3 Stacks "forever? forever ever?" Yes.
MOST DEDICATED MEMBER OF NSFL
Such a subjective award. Who are the people who have really put work into this league and give a shit at a higher level? That's my basic judgment on it. Who elevated the league at a levle of work and effort above the rest?
Dermot
Commissioner
PDXBaller
DSFL GM, Grader, like 200 other jobs
Raven
Banker, podcast maker, general good will ambassador
Winner: PDXBaller
I don't think there's a single person who put more effort into this league in S5. I don't even think it was close. the guy is everywhere, doing everything. He's a beast. He's really the only answer.
GM OF THE YEAR
I'm not one to toot my own horn. Toot. This is my award. Period. Everyone predicted my team would go far below where we landed. "OMG you made a mistake in the playoffs!" was something someone said would dq me form this. Fuck that. I earned this shit. I took the biggest fucking mess this league has seen and I cleaned it up. If you don't vote for me for this award, you're lying. The other complaint was "oh i didn't agree with the trades". The trades that worked? Those trades.
B)
Sorry. Had to be honest on that one. And I don't want to diminish the efforts of my CO-GM. The one multiple people told me not to hire because he couldn't do it or couldn't handle it. How'd that turn out? Not 4-10. That's how it turned out. Sidenote: Arbi was one of the very few people who got a perfect season prediction. That oldest/youngest GM combo has teeth. :towel:
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Eric Kennedy. I'm not even gonna argue anything else. Is there another argument? I am not even sure. He was so good that people were claiming he broke the game somehow.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Here we go. This is the one. Yes, you know who my answer will end up being. Does that matter? It's not like I'm saying it just because of his colors here. Let's just get to the comparisons.
Angus Winchester LB Otters
102 Tackles, 17 Sacks, 10 Passes Defenced, 2 Tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, 1 recovered
Harrif Ernston LB Outlaws
100 Tackles, 12 Sacks, 13 Passes Defenced, 10 Tackles for loss, 1 forced and recovered fumble, 2 Ints
Jaylon Lee LB Liberty
104 Tackles, 13 Sacks, 13 Passes Defenced, 5 Tackles for loss, 1 fumble recovered, 1 int
Winner: Harrif Ernston
It's not like I'm gonna be mad if Angus wins. It's not like he doesn't deserve the award. I just think the guy who DIDN'T have 4 other teammates in the top 10 for sacks had the slightly better season. Even without the fact that Winchester benefited from the single best defense in league history, Ernston's overall numbers are as good if not better. He was a bigger threat in the passing game and bigger threat in getting into the backfield. Jaylon Lee also existed.
BREAKOUT PLAYER
Yeah it's Kennedy. There isn't a single argument against him other than "he's already winning bigger awards". So here's your two runners up. It would be super ticky tacky not to give it to him.
Buddha Browning WR Outlaws
Went from 74 catches, 820 yards, and 4 TDs to 82 catches, 1555 yards, and 9 tds
Matt Akselsen QB Yellowknife
Went from 369 completions, 3899 yards, 25 tds, 17 ints, 61.8% completion, 82.9 rating to 407 completions, 5133 yards, 41 tds, 13 ints,58.8% completion 93.5 rating
Winner: The guy who doubled in production by doubling in touches, rather than the QB who made it possible by improving leaps and bounds while only increasing his throws by 20% or the receiver who broke out bigtime by almost doubling his yards and mroe than doubling his tds with only 9 more catches. Both of them didn't need double the touches. It is what it is.
OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
It's not like there is a lot of actual competition. Season Five was a definite defensive heavy draft. It really only comes down to 3 names.
John Wachter WR Hawks
79 catches, 849 yards, 8 TDs
Fresh Booter WR Legion
85 catches, 735 yards, 7 tds
Carlito Crush TE Yeti
48 catches, 306 yards
Winner: John Wachter
He had the better season despite tougher competition for passes on his team and gets the slight nod over Booter for it. Both are future stars. Carlito is a safety blanket in an offensive that's focused on running the ball. His presence makes that Yeti offense bad instead of downright terrible., It's an accomplishment for sure. It's just not what wins this award. He may however be that mythical 3rd Tight End in the league that actually sticks and spreads defenses.
DEFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
This one has been contentious hasn't it? Everyone vying for their guy to get in (except me, perfectly happy with great performances by both my rookies but knowing neither will get into the conversation). That's why I'm just going to give it to Terell Brister instead of listing nominees. Most passes defenced in the entire league. Top 10 in Ints. Low number of tackles. Not much help. Not campaigning about defensive only touchdowns but also bragging about special teams at the same time.
MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER/MVP
I'm not writing two separate awards for this. Fuck you. Fuck your hat. Tell your hat I said fuck it. I want it to know. Let's also address the elephant in the room. Nobody did well enough for this conversation to be about anything but QBs. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it. So let's jsut get to the damned argument.
Mike Boss
392/646, 5545 yards, 60.7% completion, 41 tds, 17 ints, 98.6 rating
Matt Akselsen
407/695, 5133 yards, 58.6% completion, 41 tds, 13 ints, 93.5 rating
King Bronko
347/606, 5000 yards, 57.3% completion, 44 tds, 18 tds, 98.5 rating
Arguing before declaring a winner: Because I'm making you wait. This is one hell of a conundrum isn't it? Each guy has an argument. But at the end of the day the answer is clearly ahahahaha fuck you. I'm not answering that at all. Every answer is right and every answer is wrong. The two Ultimus QBs and the one who led the team that scored the most point sin league history. Haha. Good fucking luck people who are actually voting!!!!
 I love you. Enjoy your awards.
