Welcome everyone to the first ever interview with rookie cornerback for the DSFL, Xandra Troyski!
Hi, Xandra, welcome to the show.
Hi Bill, thanks for having me.
So, Xandra, let’s get right into it. You’re a brand new face in the DSFL, and a cornerback to boot, which is not the most flashy position. What should the other players, GMs, and fans know about you and look for in the coming weeks?
Well Bill, I think if you or any of the folks you mentioned talk to my teammates from my days at MIT, you’d find that I have plenty of flashiness and spunk off the field..ha. So in that regard, cornerback is definitely not a reflection of my personality. But at the same time, in terms of cornerbacks being really important but in an understated and often undervalued way, I like to think that that is a better reflection of my actions on and off the field. As a female athlete attending such an academically driven university, you really have to be committed to your craft to be taken seriously and not let the stigmas from all different directions (misogyny, nerd vs jock mindsets, etc) affect you. So yeah, I’m not going to be disuaded from playing by anyone just because I’m a woman, I have the backbone and history to prove it, and I’m a spunky teammate to have around!
Alright, well that sounds like a ringing self-endorsement, if I’ve ever heard one. Switching gears a little, tells us about your regular routine, what habits have gotten you to this point, that sort of thing.
You know, I used to be a night-owl but in college I actually transitioned to being a morning person, and it’s made all the difference in the world in my training and mindset. I bet you don’t hear many folks say that, ha, but it’s true! There’s something about feeling like you’re getting a little extra work in, getting ahead of the curve, while everyone else is sleeping (literally) that really makes morning workouts kind of addictive. Plus, in this wicked summer heat, it’s really the only way to keep from overheating during my long runs, other than going out at midnight.
So I get up around 5am, feed my border collie Nax, who I rescued from a local shelter, then we usually go out for a long run, regardless of what's on the calendar for the day. It helps keep my cardio and endurance up and is my personal Zen time. About midway through our loop, we’ll stop at a dog park and while Nax is playing with some other dogs, I’ll do body-weight exercises and keep an eye on him. Then we return home and start our day, which almost always includes an early afternoon training session with my trainer, Gjaed. She’s a god-send, and no matter how in-shape I feel, she manages to kick my butt. I’m not about the whole TB12 food guidance or anything like that, though I am all about Tom and would love to meet him one day. I just stick to nutritious, balanced foods in moderation and consult with nutritionists every so often to make sure I’m not fooling myself into thinking things like cheese fries are healthy!
And now that we know your normal mode, how are you going to prepare for the upcoming draft - is it impacting you at all, or are you and Nax going to keep up your regular routine?
Nax and I will just keep doing our thing - it would take something pretty ginormous to change our morning routine….not that the DSFL draft isn’t a big deal, but, you know, even though it doesn’t seem like it to fans, it’s work for all of us, just like a big business deal or deadline in other industries.
True, that’s something that’s often hard to remember - it may be a beautiful game, but it is more than that for players and front offices. Where do you see yourself ending up? Any teams that you’ve been hoping to end up on?
The only location I’ve actually been to is Tijuana, so I guess based on that logic I’d say the Luchadores. Also, their theme music is pretty groovy, and after growing in land-locked Ukraine and discovering the beauty of the ocean and beaches, I would really rather be coastal. So that adds more points to Tijuana, plus everyone except Kansas City? Sorry Kansas City
I do have a soft spot in my heart for medium size cities, if that makes anyone feel better haha.
Well there you have it folks, Tijuana seems to be the frontrunner in Xandra’s mind. We’re out of time here, but look for Xandra in the upcoming draft, along with all the other rookies out there. Xandra, I’m looking forward to hearing more about you as your career develops, and next time we can talk more game stats and less color commentary. You go Glen Coco!
