After a trade to move up to the second overall pick in the S9 DSFL draft, the defending Champion Tijuana Luchadores selected Achilles Hondo out of Fort Valley State. The outspoken running back had pegged Tijuana as one of his top destinations ahead of the draft and Tijuana clearly knew that he was their guy as well, so this definitely seems like a great pairing. With a pretty crowded backfield already, including the selection of Ricky Flores later in the draft by the Luchadores, it will be interesting to see how things shake out for this team offensively. It seems likely that Ricky Adams will return to the offense as the thunder to Flores’ lightning in the backfield with Hondo being a bit more versatile and lining up at fullback more often than not.
A few draft analysts have been a bit skeptical about Hondo's landing spot in Tijuana with regards to his ability to control himself when it comes to partying. Hondo has been known to be a bit of a party animal, though it has never affected his on field performance or locker room presence. Some however have speculated that he may not be able to control himself in a place like Tijuana and in a less controlled environment than when he was in college. It seemed that this was unfortunately coming true as Hondo was seen at a local bar in Tijuana just hours after arriving. Reports say he was seen buying shots for everyone and anyone that wanted to drink with him. One journalist who happened to be at the bar approached a clearly drunk Hondo late into the evening to try and get a brief interview from the newest football sensation. The only thing he said was, “Let me tell (hic) you summin’. I came here to..to kick gum and chew ass…..and I'm all out of gummmm”, before promptly passing out at the bar.
However, Hondo was seen the following morning at the Luchadores training facility around 6 AM. It seems the rumors of his work ethic and dedication aren't an exaggeration. In predraft interviews he always seemed a bit wild and brash, but he's clearly a competitor and team player. And more importantly, he's someone that the Luchadores have put a lot of trust in for good reason. We expect Hondo to continue his ascension and be a key part of the Luchadores’ DSFL title defense this season.
