From his downtown high-rise apartment overlooking the Mississippi River, we see a muscular 6’2” frame standing near a full size window observing the city as it passes by. His Ultimini ring and Defensive Back of the Year trophy glistens in the morning sun, prominently displayed in the center of his accomplishments among his high school and college accolades. He sits down with a portly fellow wearing a blazer and slacks holding a notepad as the camera crew assembles near them.
“Welcome to NOLA Dootcenter! Today, we’re in downtown New Orleans and sitting down with the newest Second Line member and 8th overall pick, Axel Hornbacher. Thanks for coming on the show and letting us talk to you Axel.”
AH: “Thanks Dan! I’m happy and honored that you guys wanted to talk to me today.”
Dan: “Well first off, how do you like the city?”
AH: “It’s great Dan. I love everything about it...from the food, the culture, the fans...it’s one of the best places in the world and I’m just happy to be here.”
Dan: “That’s great to hear! We love having you! How are you fitting in with the team now that training camp has ended and the preseason has started?”
AH: “It’s been alright Dan. I’m a pretty serious guy when it comes to my training and work ethic, which you saw in my time with the Portland Pythons. I wake up early to get to the training facility and try to get my cardio in every day. I’ve found some pretty dedicated guys in the locker room like Lo Rax (@Phobospwns) and Vlad (@majesiu). These guys have really helped me get acclimated to the team. I will say that some of the more ‘interesting’ guys in the locker room have made this one of the most unique experiences I’ve had.”
Dan: “Well what do you mean by that?!?”
AH: “Let’s just say Blackford Oakes’ (@Beaver) reputation is well earned and Meoff (@Loganjj21]) is on another level of debauchery...haha…”
Dan: “Haha well I’d love to dive deeper into that, but this is a PG show! The next thing I wanted to ask you about was your contract. Now leading up to the draft, you had demanded no trade clauses and player options for all years of your contract with whichever team signed you. Some people called you a diva defensive back for that, but NOLA general management obliged. Why do you think they did?”
AH: “Well first off...to all those haters that called me a diva...well..I embrace that. I knew my worth and I want to win, Dan. That’s all I’ve ever done my whole life and that’s what I’m going to continue doing in the NSFL: win..every...day. The team recognized my talent and work ethic and had no problems with my demands. It was a quick and easy process to get what I wanted and I’m going to make damn sure that they get a return on their investment. As far as it goes...and this is a PSA to other teams too...if you have a championship caliber team then I’ll stay. If you can’t make it happen, then I’m out. I know this is a business and I want to be the one to control my own destiny instead of getting traded to a team that doesn’t deserve me.”
Dan: “Those are some powerful statements there Axel. Let’s hope that the team can win another Ultimus then! Last question for you! There were some rumors regarding an altercation between you and Jonathan Towers (@Supersquare04) after the Ultimini game was done. From what we saw on the broadcast, the two of you appeared to get into it on the Pythons last drive in the game. All we could tell was that you were shouting at him from the sidelines as he was covering deep on the last few plays right after Towers tackled Smallwood-Chess. What was going on there?”
AH: “Just a continuation of his...excuse my language, bitch-ass attitude. Towers’ been a punk ever since he joined the league. Not a lot of people know this, but he’s a distant cousin of mine and we’ve got some bad blood from way back in the day. I don’t want to get into it too much because what’s done is done and I’m the one who she ended up marrying. That’s all I’m going to say for now.”
Dan: “Whoa...guess we’re going to have to bleep that one out! Alright well, thanks for your time Axel! Good luck in your first game!”
