The first round of Prospect Bowl games have concluded, and what games they were!
After a shaky start, the Grizzlies put together a solid performance on both sides of the ball to win 24-10. Running back Forrest Gump ran for one hundred and forty eight yards on twenty-nine carries, including a fifty-three yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Wide receiver Ahri Espeeyeeseetee hauled in six passes for eight-nine yards, and although he didn't manage to find the endzone, his impact was certainly felt. The Grizzlies defense was nothing short of a brick wall. Defensive lineman Nick Snider was a constant thorn in the Blackbirds' side, as he ended the day with four tackles and two sacks.
Quenton Bode played a fantastic game, and was a key figure in the Grizzlies' victory. He led the team with seven tackles, and defended against one pass. We had a chance to speak with Bode after the game:
Q: How do you feel about your performance tonight?
A: "I feel good. I was able to be in the right place at the right time, and ended up making some plays. I know I can improve, but I definitely got off on the right foot."
Q: Now that you've played a game with them, how do you feel about your teammates?
A: "Oh man, my teammates are great. During practice, we all felt like things were gelling really well, so all felt good coming into the game. It's great when things just click like that, you know? We went out there and played like we'd been playing together for years. Honestly, I think they were a big part of the reason I played as well as I did. I knew I could trust them, and having that kind of confidence in my teammates gave me the freedom to play a little more aggressively. I know it's only one game, but I think this squad has what it takes to go all the way."
Q: Your next game is against the Foxes. Terry Taffy had a dominant performance against the Owls this week, do you think you'll have an easier time stopping him?
A: "I think we'll do a good job containing him, but it certainly won't be easy. I trust our coaches to put together a plan for dealing with him, and like I said earlier, I trust my teammates to execute that plan. If we put in the work, I think we can minimize the threat he poses. But he's definitely a threat."
Q: One final question. How do you feel your performance tonight affected your draft stock?
A: [i]"I honestly don't know. Again, I feel like I played well, but I don't know how those GMs and scouts felt about me before the game. In a perfect world, I'd say my performance tonight shot me to the top of all the mock drafts, but we both know that this isn't a perfect world. [Laughs] I'll say this: I don't know if I moved up, but I'm pretty sure I didn't move down. Is that a good answer?"
The Central Grizzlies travel to face the Southwest Foxes next week. Both teams are 1-0, so expect this to be a hard-fought contest.
