Excerpt from a radio interview:
Host: “And speaking of the Luchadores, here’s their kicker and punter, fifth round pick Dean Jackson. How you doing Dean?”
Jackson: “Hey man, I'm doing great, thanks for having me on today.”
Host: “Thank you for showing up - how's your first month in Tijuana been?”
Jackson: “You know, it’s just been awesome. This is a great city full of great people, and I'm sure I'll have a good year. Tons of food options around the stadium which is also nice.”
Host: “Have you been to that little Indian place a block north of it?”
Jackson: “Heh, not yet but my teammates keep telling me to. I don't have a great tolerance for spicy food though, so I probably won't be there before a game.”
Host: “Well moving on to football: how did it feel to step on the field of your first professional football game?”
Jackson: “Aw man, it was just fantastic. Games at Rice were great but we aren't a huge school, and even away games at the big universities don't compare to a DSFL game. Just looking up into the stands was crazy, realizing how many people are watching. We knew it was gonna be a tough game, facing up against the Seawolves in Norfolk. I was kind of disappointed I didn't get a chance to kick a field goal in that first game, but my extra points were solid, so that was good.”
Host: “How about your second game up in Kansas City? That was a really intense game, and you had your first career field goal make and attempt, and it wasn't short by any means! What was going through your mind when coach sent you out to kick that one?”
Jackson: “Oh, that was a fun game for sure. The field goal was a 47-yarder, so definitely make-able. I've kicked over that plenty, it's just a little daunting for your first pro kick. Stats won't stay because it's the preseason, but one: you don't want your first field goal to be a miss, and two: stats are secondary to winning, and if I miss it could inhibit our chances at that.”
Host: “Well like you said, it is just the preseason, but the Luchadores went 0-4. In that second game, you had to punt 10 times. The offense isn't really helping you out; do you think that's indicative of how Tijuana will play in the regular season?”
Jackson: “Not at all. Look, I can't really speak for the offense, but I think we’re gonna be great this year. Against the Coyotes we had a great second half and we just need to harness that kind of energy consistently. This is what the preseason is for: ironing out the kinks and really creating chemistry. Being one of just two new quarterbacks in the DSFL, Issac Brown is being compared to Wolverine Justice a lot, and even if he may not have had as hot a start, I think he’ll play big in the regular season. And then there's Sydney Spinelli; that guy is electric. I mean, did y'all see that 83 yard run? Pretty sure that's a new record.Although I guess since it was preseason it won't be official. Damn. Still, we've got weapons on offense and I'm confident they'll perform. As for the punting, it was a lot of times to punt, yeah, but I definitely could've done better with placing them. 2 out of 10 inside the 20 isn't terrible numbers-wise, but I should've been able to land a few more in.”
Host: “Hmm. Well thanks for that analysis; obviously we’re all hoping for a great season here in Tijuana. I know you've got to run, so I wish you luck in your first regular season game Tuesday!”
Jackson: “Thanks! It's been fun.”
