DRAFT RELATED
(2532 words - READY TO BE GRADED)
Hello! My name is Joliet L. Christ of the Portland Pythons (again) and I am super excited to be back on a talented team like Portland and be the quarterback for this team. With that being said, I would like to do a recap of the picks that we made in this year's draft, myself included and give a rundown of the player and also how I think that player will affect me in any way. I will not grade the picks, as I believe they all have potential to be A+ picks in the end if everyone is around and active and believes in the idea we have here in Portland, except Bennett. This is simply a pick run down along with a fit with myself, the QB and maybe how I felt when these picks were drafted, to mix things up a little bit. I am happy I'm a part of this team! This will not be an official draft recap by ESPN standards, this is the OFFICIAL QB PERSPECTIVE DRAFT RECAP!
Round 1: Pick 3 RB D'Pez Poopsie
Recap: An all-around back at 6'3 and 235 pounds out of Ole Miss, this guy is a bonafide DSFL superstar in the making. With talk of Lagerfield being back in Portland but having the potential to be called up anytime, Portland wanted to get a running back who can star for them. Poopsie is huge, but, has a lot of speed so far starting at 76 speed. This guy can do it all on the field, run left, run right, run through you, run around you, block, catch passes, and all that. He is a player that Portland was smart to grab at the number three overall pick
Fit with the QB: With myself being a mobile running quarterback, the running game is super important and the backfield is the key. If I, Lagerfield and Poopsie are in the backfield, teams should be afraid of an option attack as any have the ability to run the ball. I would have no problem handing the ball off to Poopsie multiple times a game. Having a great running back takes a lot of pressure off myself and opens up the passing lanes for me for this offense to really click.
What I was thinking: When this pick was first made, I was a little upset and scared knowing I had talked to Tijuana about their open quarterback position and I wanted back in the Rip City. I never once thought it was a bad pick though as Poopsie can be dynamic for Portland. In the end, it all worked out and now I have a chance to play with D'Pez in the same backfield rather than him being scooped up earlier. I was more thrilled about this pick after I knew I was coming back to Portland.
Round 2: Pick 1 (5th Overall) QB Joliet L. Christ
Recap: Joliet L. Christ is the best quarterback in the draft, no doubt about it. Forget about Falconi, forget about Wozy, forget about Orosz and forget about Bennett, Christ is here to dominate. The South Dakota product lit it up in college and has experience playing at the DSFL level already. With the best legs out of anyone and a solid arm that is only improving, Christ is multi-dimensional and has the ability to score points with his arms and feet. This is a great spot to pick the QB with San Antonio next up in order to snag the young signal caller.
Fit with the QB: There is no fit with the QB, I am the QB and this is me. However, with the right gameplan in place, the fit for Christ and this offense is tremendous. The great backfield with Christ under center should scare any teams in the DSFL. It was also being cool being the first 'new' NSFL user to be drafted also, confirming my fit in this league.
What I was thinking: I was thrilled! I wanted to come back to Portland as this is where I played my football last season. I came back to where it all started and it just means that the team is behind me and believes in me. I thank the GM and coaching staff in that belief and will come back with a vengeance and I will lead this team to great things. I had thought I would come back to Portland but just hearing my name called made it so much better and alleviated any stress and wondering in my brain. Let's get to work!
Round 2: Pick 3 (7th Overall) CB Lucari Felix
Recap: Felix is one of if not the top CB in this draft class and is poised to continue his success with Portland as he was claimed at the end of last season along with Christ. This 6'3 cornerback out of Venice, Italy is a great man to man guy and is boosting his speed to tremendous levels. Starting at 75 speed and a lot of money in the bank, this is an amazing pick and with great activity, Felix could be the top CB in the DSFL. With offense addressed with first two picks, it was time to sure up the defense and Felix is a great start to that.
Fit with the QB: I won't interact with Felix other than facing him in practice and having to avoid being intercepted by him but the fit with me is in the locker room. He is my boy and we formed the #SuperstarSquad last season and vowed to be back with Portland. I know the user from EFL and there is familiarity there. While we play on different sides of the ball, the locker room connection will be terrific!
What I was thinking: Exactly what I wanted. People were talking about him being on recreate number whatever and I was like who cares, we need him in Portland. The #SuperstarSquad is reunited and it is time to get to work, I mean, I am writing this huge media piece because he told me to. We will keep each other accountable and be leaders on the offense and defense!
Round 2: Pick 4 (8th Overall) CB/S Shannon Hobbs
Recap: Another secondary player to build some beasts in the defensive backfield, Hobbs was a great pick right here at this point. Hobbs will switch to a center field safety and patrol the field for the Python defense. Hobbs, the University of Utah product with a 5'10, 185-pound frame and already at 80 speed with coverage tendencies, Hobbs could be dangerous back there. With Felix picked right before and manning up on the outside, Hobbs will be able to provide additional pressure on the opponent receiver and quarterback combos and help not only shut them down but get some turnovers also. Another great fit for the locker room and for the defense, this was a smart pick at the end of the 2nd round.
Fit with the QB: Another player I won't fit with on the field but will fit with off the field unless he comes to play offense some time. Another player I know from EFL, we have experience with each other and can use that in the locker room. Will be a great fit from my point of view.
What I was thinking: Originally, I did not know this was evryday from the EFL and I was going around saying where are my wide receivers!? I thought from a defensive help view that it was an amazing pick but from a quarterback point of view I just wanted weapons. After learning who it was and everything, I was thrilled with the pick.
Round 4: Pick 1 (13th Overall) S Damien Arnold
Recap: Another secondary player going to Portland and another safety to pair with Hobbs in the defensive backfield. While I don't think it was necessarily a need pick, this pick appears to have been based off potential best player available. Arnold, the Michigan University product, is bigger than Hobbs, standing at 6'1 and weighing 215 pounds and is also considered a center field type safety. He starts at 75 speed and agility and along with Hobbs and Felix, who is going to want to throw on this defense after this draft? NSFL quarterbacks maybe but no DSFL quarterback. This is a great pick based on building a dominant secondary.
Fit with the QB: Unlike the previous two, I don't have experience with this user but I look forward to working with him on and off the field. I will not interact with him on the field so any interactions outside of me roasting him with passes will be off the field. I think if he is active and willing to work, people will regret not drafting him and he will be a great fit for the Pythons.
What I was thinking: I was mad at first, I have to be honest. I wanted a wide receiver or a tight end or something around me that was going to help this offense. Give me Hendrix II or Hasselhoff here, why another safety!? I now am happy with the pick but at the time, I was wondering if I was going to get any WR help.
Round 5: Pick 1 (17th Overall) WR Taylor Peterson
Recap: Taylor Peterson, the wide receiver out of Hampton University by way of Suffolk, Virginia was a good fit pick. The Pythons had addressed the quarterback and running back positions but so far had not addressed the wide receiver position before selecting Peterson 17th overall. Peterson, a route runner will be a terrific addition to the offense even if he is smaller at 5'8 and 176 pounds. He will start with 74 speed and 70 hands making him a reliable target for Christ as the season progresses.
Fit with the QB: Wide receiver and quarterback combos are what you are looking for and here is one that could be really good. I don't know the user much but look forward to getting to know him on and off the field as we work on the offense and the connection from pass to catch. I see there being many targets heading Peterson's way and I am hoping for a solid repertoire with the young wide receiver in order to be successful.
What I was thinking: Hallelujah! We got a wide receiver! That is what I was thinking. I was originally wanting Hasselhoff who I worked with last season but was glad we could grab something here in terms of Peterson. Good to have him on the team and let's get another wide receiver or offensive weapon.
Round 6: Pick 1 (21st Overall) RB Adam Krossman
Recap: Krossman was traded to San Antonio for a season 10 3rd round pick and a season 11 5th round pick so he will never play in a Python uniform. The Pythons pick up a few picks that may or may not be serviceable depending on how many recruits enter the league and the quality of recruits as well.
Fit with the QB: Could have been a nice 3rd running back or wide receiver option but he gone now. The picks can hopefully be used on other offensive weapons the next seasons while I am a Python.
What I was thinking: Originally was thinking it was okay but I wanted Hasselhoff here. I also wanted the kicker DeMarco here also. This was essentially a wasted pick but we got a 3rd and 5th for a guy drafted in the 6th round. I am upset we missed out on Demarco though.
Round 7: Pick 1 (25th Overall) WR Felix Hasselhoff
Recap: The German Felix Hasselhoff is a big 6'2, 207-pound receiver that played for Portland late last season. Many people said that this pick could go either way depending on if the user stays active or not but Hasselhoff has a chance to be an absolute steal. At 76 speed, 72 hands and 70 agility, Felix has a great chance to make some big plays for the Portland offense. He is more of a route runner and has good instincts coming off the line. With some development, Hasselhoff could be one of the more dominant wide receivers in the DSFL and in the 7th round, it is a tremendous value.
Fit with the QB: Hasselhoff was my go-to receiver at the end of last season and I believe I even threw a touchdown or two to him as I was working on my DSFL experience. We have a good quarterback to wide receiver connection so far and with the experience for each player, last season in Portland looks to grow even more. I think it is a great fit for myself and a great fit for the team.
What I was thinking: Like Felix, this is what I wanted. I wanted Hasselhoff way earlier than he went but having him slip here and still get him is amazing. We got great players and still got him, how could I be mad. I was so happy, until the 8th round pick.
Round 8: Pick 1 (29th Overall) QB Chris Bennett
Recap: The Pythons, having not many choices, selected Bennett even though they have their quarterback of the present in Christ. It can be important to have a backup quarterback with endurance on a mobile quarterback maybe wavering at times. However, Bennett is not someone Joliet wants to play with so will be an interesting dynamic moving forward with time.
Fit with the QB: Not good. Not good at all. Bennett is my rival in the PBE and there has been too much trash talking both ways. It will not be a happy locker room if I am sharing many snaps with Bennett and could lead to problems down the road. I believe I should be the quarterback of this team and we now have a backup that I think should play on a different team. It is not a good fit on or off the field.
What I was thinking: At first, I threatened to quit the team. Was it real? Probably not. Was it something that I didn't want to happen, for sure. I don't hate the user, it is fun to build our rivalry in PBE and such but it is different when on the same team at the same position. One of us has to lose snaps to the other, and as a Portland returnee, I would hope the focus would be to get me more snaps and reps in order for this team to be successful. Like I said, we will see how it plays out, but if I lose snaps to Bennett, I will play on a bot team haha.
Thanks, everyone for reading my recap and I hope to be a big part of the DFSL and eventually NSFL. It is time for the second coming here in Portland! Portland will win with this draft! My prediction is that we will lead the league in rushing and have the best pass defense in the league. With this combination, Portland is in good position for an Ultimini title.
