Since these pop up every season, I figured I’d make one, too. To be honest, even as a league veteran, it’s hard for me to “rank” teams as I’ve only been part of one locker room for all of my time here. I’m fairly confident that I’ll be able to fit in with any team that drafts me and that I’ll be able to add value to that team at the DT position.
That said, several teams have reached out to me, so let’s return the love.
Honorable Mention - Yellowknife Wraiths
I can’t even properly put the Wraiths in this list because it would be unfair to everyone else. This is a team that I spent 9 seasons with on my last player and never seriously considered leaving. I love this team and would be glad to be part of their locker room again, but they’re the only home I’ve ever known, so it’s not a fair comparison. That said, the idea of meeting a whole new group of players and having to integrate into a new locker room is very exciting, so we’ll keep YKW out of the mix just to keep things fair.
#1 - New Orleans Second Line
If Kennedy ever left YKW as a free agent, it would have been to go to NOLA. Now, as many people know, the character was based out of New Orleans and much of my early media focused around this. So, when a team was moved to the Big Easy, it seemed like a natural fit. I never ended up making the jump, but if I had gone to Free Agency, I imagine they would have had a fantastic shot at me. I’m also really proud of the work that Bovo has done with this team and, even if he isn’t their GM anymore, I’m confident that the team is in good hands and that his work will live on through the next generation of GMs.
#2 - Baltimore Hawks
The reigning, defending Ultimus champions! Big congrats to these guys as this has been a long time coming. I’ve always enjoyed interacting with slm and manic strikes me as a solid dude. These guys have done a lot to help this team finally break through to the top and I’ve got no doubt that I would be in great hands with this organization. Admittedly, I’m not the type to just attach myself to a winner and jockeying to go to Baltimore or NOLA would simply be me trying to make a strong team even stronger. However, I respect both organizations and they’ve both done a tremendous job of reaching out.
#3 - Philadelphia Liberty
First off, I have always loved the branding of this team. On top of that, the 0-14 record presents a great challenge and I enjoy a good challenge. This is a team that I want to see make a comeback regardless of whether I end up there or not. I hope that my status as a veteran and former GM would be able to help them in that quest if I do end up there. That said, I believe they hold the #1 pick and I don’t know that I’ve earned that distinction. On a personal level, it would be cool to see that happen, but I’m sure someone else will ultimately earn that spot.
#4 - Arizona Outlaws
I really enjoyed interacting with run_CMC during my time as a GM. I thought he always handled his team well from the outside looking in. The Outlaws have fallen far from their early days, but they’ve also shed the image that came with that. Regardless of what anyone thinks about the “asterisk championships”, that’s a situation that was inherited by the GMs of the team and a lot of good members have worked hard to turn that image around. If the Outlaws ever return to their former glory, I’d love to be a part of that and to see them win the big one without any controversy.
#5 - Orange County Otters
Admittedly, this is a great organization that is probably the most consistent performer in the league. I’m not too familiar with either GM, though I had some good conversations with speculadora during scouting back when I was a GM. However, that does give some of the other teams an edge as far as my preference goes. However, this is a team that routinely sees its members remain loyal and some even return after testing free agency. They must be doing something right.
#6 - San Jose Sabercats
I’m not sure what to make of SJS. They’re one of only two teams who haven’t reached out to me, so I don’t know what to make of that. They have an early pick, so it’s likely that they’ve narrowed it down to a small pool of players and don’t have me in mind for that pick. No harm in that.
#7 - Colorado Yeti
The other team that hasn’t contacted me and, as far as I know, they don’t have a first-round pick. So, no offense to the Yeti, but I’m at least hoping to go in the first-round. Perhaps they trade up at the last minute, but I don’t seem to be someone that they have their eyes on.
Definitely a lot of possibilities on the table. We’ve had some crazy drafts in the past and things can change on a whim, but for right now, this is the landscape as I see it. Either I’ll have a chance at a fresh start or I’ll rejoin my old friends in YKW. For now, the wait continues and the anticipation continues to build. Regardless of where I end up, I am definitely looking forward to being part of that team.
