(S19) - PT3 - Stadium Experiences

The big thing about arriving to a game in Yellowknife is the prestige of showing up on a frigid January playoff game day in your dogsled. Some people may see this as a strange tradition but in the types of climates that people up here around the Great Slave Lake know that you can't get a truck around veryy easily in the heavy winter snow and ice here, and while a snowmobile works well it doesn't come with the same sort of badass factor as the dude who shows up on the dogsled. While it's not nearly the majority of people that take that route, a good amount of people like the dogsled method and they turn it into a whole big event. There are competitions for who can deck out their dogsled in the best Wraiths swag. There are competitions for whose team of dogs can pull the most weight or which single dog can pull the most weight. They race their dogsleds across the parking lot. And yes they even have their own parking section reserved exclusively for the dogsledders which is known to be one of the craziest tailgating areas around the entire stadium. These dudes can throw back a bottle of that firewater like it's root beer and if they are still conscious by game time it's considered a failure.

The Baltimore hawks carry a lot of the old traditions of the city on their backs. Baltimore was the beating heart of the nation in its earliest of days. It was the major port city for the colonies. New York became a major trade hub due to the Erie canal but It was Baltimore who gave the nation its strength abroad. The last great sailing ship ever designed was the Baltimore clipper ship. It was the fastest thing on the water for decades and could hold its own in ocean storms just fine. Frigates from her yards outfought the greatest navy in the world. In the war of 1812 the capital was burned to the ground with a rampaging redcoat army bearing down on her, and yet she stood up to carry the nation as her capital defiant to the end, allowing for the victory of the nation (winning a battle after the scoreboard was reset means you win). The hawks pay heed to these great acts by washing themselves in the salt of the bay before every game home and away. The sea provides for those who are fast enough. strong enough. ferocious enough to take it. Most of the time we just use water balloons or a mister.

Since I am both the gm of the Pythons and a member of the Outlaws I get to talk about both stadium atmospheres, so I will.

Let’s begin with the Pythons. As for all games, we have many tailgators in the parking lot. Our tailgates are insane. The fans do some insane things like jumping on tables, burning pictures of the enemy, painting their stomachs with Gold and Black, they even go as far as to egg the opponents bus when they pull into the stadium. During the game it is a whole different story. Whenever we score or our opponents mess up the entire crowd hisses and due to the way our stadium is built the sound gets amplified to a whole nother level. It even once got so loud that we reached the 140 decibel mark breaking the record for loudest roar at a sports stadium.

Moving onto Arizona, the games are much different compared to Portland. The fans are actually quite chill and don’t go out of line too often. There was this one instance with a firecracker but I would rather not talk about it. The most notable part of the Outlaws experience is the White Castle we have built inside of the stadium. Every home game during halftime you can see Outlaws Wide Receiver Saba Donut rushing over there to grab food for the entire team. His contract even stated that there needed to be a White Castle built in order for it to be valid.
