Jacksonville’s Own On Track To Make Major Splash
At 5’10, 195 pounds, Desta Danger doesn’t come across as the most impressive athlete to suit up. The young Cornerback is not a monster among men, nor is he the fastest to grace the fields of the DSFL. Yet here he stands, finishing out his first season and looking forward to the playoffs, and ultimately the draft. In this article, we caught up with the young up and comer and are detailing his story as he takes the beginning steps of his young career.
The young standout had a great career as a Sun devil. In 3 years, he managed to tie the career Interception record held by Mike Richardson at 18 and actually broke Henry Rich’s Single Season record with 13. Most noticeably, he also had 20 sacks, and 15 forced fumbles throughout his collegiate career. He was set to be a surefire star until he unfortunately tore his ACL during offseason training preparing for the DSFL draft. This catastrophe plummeted his stock. His career seemed over until the Tijuana Luchadores signed him off waivers giving him a second chance at living his dream.
When asked who he modeled his career after, Danger immediately thought of Tyrann Mathieu stating “that its amazing seeing someone like him playing like he is the biggest player on the field. He has the heart of the lion and will play anywhere and everywhere on the field,” and it is difficult to deny the similarities. As a Corner at Arizona State, Danger has played in every spot in the defensive backfield, once even lining up as a stand up linebacker earning a sack on the play. He also had a reputation of being one of the most sure tacklers on a strong defensive unit. It is hard to deny that he had an impact in every facet of the defensive side of the ball. It will certainly be interesting to see whether he can keep up that level of production at the next level.
Tijuana seems to certainly believe he can. This team with a tradition of strong defensive units claimed him off waivers almost as soon as he became available and it seems to be working well as Danger has meshed well with the team front office and coaching staff. To date, through 12 games played with the team, Danger has amassed 54 tackles, 2 forced fumbles (1 recovery), 1 sack, 2 interceptions, and 10 pass deflections. It certainly seems that the coaching staff is using his versatile potential well. When asked how he felt about his production, Danger had this to say:
I wish I could get to the QB more. I miss Quarterbacks fearing me coming at them which is not something that is usual from someone at my position. However, my defensive line does plenty in that regard. I could probably teach Ugandan Knuckles a thing or two about coming off the edge but I trust the big fella to do just fine. I am appreciative that my coaches are giving me the ability to showcase my ability to play in a more conventional role and cover as much as I do. I know how much that will be valued at the next level and they are putting me in a position to showcase my talents off.”
People are in fact, noticing his ability. One source within a team's management looked at two games that Danger played. The first, against San Antonio where he only got 2 tackles throughout the game and then the second, against the Coyotes, where he had 5 tackles and two pass deflections. Interestingly enough, the source had this to say:
[the San Antonio game] is actually the better game despite outward appearances. He stuck to his man and didn’t give much of anything up.
This is huge praise as his conventional, downfield coverage play was a huge question mark after college. Many did not think he would be able to compete but he seems to be holding his own. Only time will tell if the Jacksonville native can continue his play. But what of his experience off the field?
When asked about his team, Danger chuckled and mentioned that they were a major part of his success going so far as mentioning that his teammate Verso L’Alto has been a motivator to him. L’Alto’s efforts on and off the field could not be understated and it is understandable while Danger is pushed by him.
Danger is poised to make a splash here in the coming seasons. The young corner seems motivated to excel, eager to face the competition, and hungry for the next opportunity. He faces a tough test against the 4-9 Palm Beach Solar Bears in the final regular season clash. We here at the Duval Daily Bugle will certainly be watching with much anticipation and are excited to cover the rest of Desta Danger’s journey.
