For @Dawegg
Well, here comes another weird SJS trade.
Yellowknife Receives:
Brad Pennington (S10 Salary Retained)
San Jose Receives:
Mat Akselsen (S10 Salary Retained)
S10 YKW 1st (4th Overall)
Okay, nothing really hard about the value of the trade. The only draft pick involved is this season, so that's nice and straightforward.
Now, I could point out that Pennington was drafted 3rd overall in S8, and has been as active as a team can ask for since being drafted. He was a blue chip prospect and has delivered on the draft grade. One would expect his value to have increased, yet instead it went down slightly. I hear he requested the trade, which makes sense, but a 4th overall pick for a max earner entering his prime at QB is kind of a steal.
For Yellowknife, it's easy to see why they wanted the deal. Akselsen has one more year of good play left (which won't happen, more on that in a bit). Getting Pennington takes a fringe team in the less competitive conference and vaults them back to being contenders again in S11. With Colorado in chaos and Baltimore nearing the end of their window, the Wraiths have a chance to be the Buffalo Bills of the NSFL, and who could say no to that? Right?
As for SJS, though, why Akselsen? Last year, they were trying to tank. This year, Logan Noble could be available in a couple of hours after Philly drafts a QB. If trying to tank, surely just pick him up, right? Also, when I said in my last article that SJS was moving up this year to give Pennington a window, I guess I was wrong. Their next QB won't be able to compete until after Fitzpatrick and Showbiz start to top out, yet SJS needed to have talent early? Sure, they'll have a great core of players, between Flash and Deringer in S9 and whichever 4 players they get this year in the top 9, that will be a solid pair of draft classes, but then next year they won't have a first or second rounder, just an early third. There will still be talent available there, but I just don't get the plan.
However, none of that is what bothers me about this trade. What bothers me is that Mat Akselsen, the first good mobile QB we've had (though hopefully not the last @`AndrewWarren13`, I'm loving your build so far), is going to go out like a bitch. His regression, done by ckroyal, is just disgustingly bad. He dropped his speed, intelligence and hands, making him easier to sack, a LOT more likely to turn the ball over, and a less explosive player. Combine that with the downgrade in weapons he'll have, and Akselsen might be the worst non-rookie QB this year, which I didn't want.
Akselsen is currently 3rd all time in total yards, and this year he will pass King Bronko for second. However, given that he is now regressed improperly and on a shitty team, Blocksdale will pass him in yards while remaining more efficient, which really lowers his chance of the Hall of Fame.
SJS lost this trade because they got poor value for Pennington, a franchise QB, and now have moved back their window for their third time without once yet being a contender.
YKW acquired a QB on the verge of being a contender just as their window closed, dooming them to mediocrity.
The whole league lost on getting to see Akselsen make wonderful plays one last time.
Pennington is the ONLY person who came out of this better, because he is going to a team where the #2 WR is better than his old team's #1. Expect a huge breakout year from him, by the way. Like...almost double the TANY/A.
