It's time for Fitz v Biz again! I waited through all of S9 for this again.
Let's start by breaking down each QB's attributes.
Fitz 50 Str 70 Agi 81 Arm 90 Int 90 Acc 73 Spd 28 Hnd 70 End 92 Ovr
Biz 57 Str 60 Agi 85 Arm 85 Int 92 Acc 60 Spd 15 Hnd 70 End 90 Ovr
Both QBs are pretty similar, but we see that Showbiz is better at connecting to receivers, while Fitzpatrick has the edge in scrambling and avoiding sacks. How well did those strengths and weaknesses play out over the season?
Completion Percentage
Fitz 59.9%
Biz 55.8%
This is a bit surprising, but there are a few factors. For one, Fitz started off with 90 accuracy and raised his scrambling ability over the season, whereas Biz built accuracy all year. In addition, probably the bigger difference is that Fitz settled for check downs a lot more often, averaging just barely under 10 yards per completion. Showbiz went a full yard and a half longer at 11.5. Admittedly, he did have receivers who were more capable of getting yards after the catch.
Sacks Taken
Fitz 39
Biz 61
As I mentioned in the QB TANY/A article, this is where Showbiz's stock fell hard. His 61 sacks were the second-worst this season (surpassed by Noble with 66), and not only did they cost him 130 yards, but it cost him a lot of opportunities to connect to his talented receivers. Fitz had a significant advantage here with a top tier offensive line, but he also did some great dancing. In addition, Fitz appeared to run more quick pass plays in the West Coast offense, where Biz appeared to run a lot more Spread, which gave defenders more time.
Touchdowns
Fitz 17 passing, 1 rushing
Biz 14 passing
This is still the most surprising stat. The best explanation I can come up with (and it will appear one other time) is the rushing game. Mackworthy rushed more times than Adams, and for more yards per carry. Fitz was just given slightly more red zone opportunities, and maybe OL factors in more in those short yardage situations. Still, I find it very odd that in ten games with Crush, they only connected for 4 TDs. What was particularly interesting was that neither QB really seemed to have a true red zone threat, with Crindy hauling in 1 TD and Zephyrous 2. Both teams will likely be looking to improve that next year.
Turnovers
Fitz 6 interceptions, 1 fumble
Biz 8 interceptions, 3 fumbles
This could easily be explained by attributes, as Fitz has the higher intelligence and hands, but I am also going to go back to the run game. The better a pass defense he was facing, the less of a role he had in moving the chains, relying on the veteran Mackworthy and the mauling offensive line to move the chains.
Passing Yards
Fitz 3392
Biz 3532
These marks were very close, but they got there in very different ways. 7 of Fitzpatrick's 14 games saw him pass for under 200 yards, something Showbiz did only once (though Showbiz set the mark for fewest passing yards in a game with 133). Conversely, not once did Fitz break 50 pass attempts, something Biz did twice (though Fitzpatrick had the highest single game passing yardage with 382). This is something that may flip next year, as Orange County will have the stronger run game and Arizona will have to live or die on passing.
Rushing
Fitz 38 carries, 144 yards, 1 TD
Biz 34 carries, 99 yards, 0 TDs
Both QBs did pretty well here, despite very different advantages and disadvantages. Fitzpatrick had better mobility, and better blocking, but opposing defenses feared the run more than the pass, so his scrambles weren't catching anyone off-guard. Showbiz, conversely, wasn't as mobile, and definitely lacked the blocking, but was able to capitalize on defenses far more afraid of the passing game. The best illustration of this would be that 93 of his 99 rushing yards occurred before Crush was traded.
In conclusion, there is no doubt that these two QBs are very comparable, and despite them playing in very different systems and building differently as well, both are having success. Both will have their ups and downs. Next year, they may even switch roles entirely, with Showbiz being more efficient while Fitzpatrick sees more volume.
