Almost two months have passed since Beau Montgomery underwent a controversial surgery to switch his position from speed-rushing linebacker to man-to-man cornerback. Montgomery has certainly had a learning curve as expected but he seems to be developing rapidly as the weeks go on. Beau was lauded for his work ethic in pre-draft scouting reports and it appears that his penchant for going the extra mile is paying off for the Colorado Yeti as he develops into their number one cornerback. Desta Danger has been a serviceable complement to the young man from Wisconsin and the two have identical stat lines with the exception of Danger having a forced fumble to his name. Both Montgomery and Danger have picked off two passes, Beau had two in his last game, and they have both swatted down an additional seven balls thrown their way. The difference between the two is that Beau started off slowly and is getting his stats as the season goes on and he looks like he is the favourite to lead the team in those two categories.
The Yeti dropped their first five games as the defence could not stop a nosebleed and the offence couldn't seem to get the chains to move. However, the last two games have seen the defence tighten up and the offence put out some impressive performances as the Yeti beat the Philadelphia Liberty and the Yellowknife Wraiths for a two-game win streak. The Yeti launched a new social media campaign last night featuring the hashtag, #YetiUndefeated2019, to encourage the team to never lose again. If the Yeti can keep the win streak alive they can challenge the Baltimore Hawks for the division lead. If Colorado stumbles then they can always catch the Liberty for the last playoff spot and the honour of being knocked out by Baltimore in several weeks.
If Colorado wishes to stay in the playoff hunt then they will need to shore up some things such as McCormick's propensity for throwing interceptions. Now, a lot of those are the veteran quarterback doing his best to try and come from behind and give his team some moral victories. The other half of that is the defence puts the team in early holes with their poor play and then the QB has to move the chains as fast as he can and that means airing it out. If the young defence can continue to put in the work off the field so that their performance on the gridiron can continue to grow to new heights then the offence will have less pressure placed upon it.
The Yeti have a very imposing matchup with the Otters tonight and Orange County is the best team in the entire league and Colorado has their work cut out for them. The Otters matchup very well with anyone and should really make mincemeat out of the young defence from Denver. Orange County has a very potent offence and their defence is chock full of playmakers so it would appear to even the most staunch Yeti defender that their winning streak is over. Even if the Yeti manages to pull out a miracle this week, they head into Baltimore next week to face the top team in the NSFC.
While it would seem that the season is going to be more down than up for the young players from Colorado, the future is very bright. Colorado's first-round pick, James Bishop, has been electric this season. The rookie wideout is one of the brightest rising stars in the league and is poised to be the leagues top wide receiver one day. The Denver based franchise has some serious potential in their pipelines but they need to keep making good choices on draft day!
