Everyone in the know about this season 18 rookie class has heard of the elected leader of this group of miscreants. She is currently one of the top prospects in the upcoming DSFL class and has made her mark in the DSFL as the leader in rushing yards. She is a captain of the Norfolk locker room and is renowned for her cool head and her ability to beat Woelker whenever she likes. Without further ado, let's introduce Queen Bex!
Ironside: “You have mentioned only recently getting into the sport of football. What is it that drew you to the league?”
Bex: “I had no intention of joining the league when I first heard about it. I wasn’t a football fan at all, I was just asking questions about something my friend was involved with. That conversation began with a quick lesson on the sport overall, then the league specifically. What I was hearing about the community continued to keep my interest alive, and I started considering it as a real thing I could join.
I have an RPG background. I've always loved coming up with characters and backstories. The sudden flood of information about football came together in this character. And once Marcella T?riki existed in my brain, I had lost. I signed up that night, and haven't looked back since. Because to me, it is a great disservice to come up with a larger than life character and then not do anything with them. Marcella's done me proud, and I like to think I'm doing her proud too.”
Ironside: “Now that you’re here with the NSFL, you’ve taken to the competition like a fish to water. What is it about the league that draws you in and keeps you coming back for more?”
“The league has become a thing I'm willing to invest in for a few reasons. One, I think the people are great. In the s18 rookie class alone, I've been able to make such amazingly supportive friends. I love being able to be there for people, and knowing that my class is in my corner too.
Second, I am absolutely a competitive person. As soon as the index gets updated each week, I'm in there pouring over the numbers, seeing where I'm standing, thinking about what I could be doing to improve, where I need to be putting my TPE to have the most impact. I have a little notebook where I write out my numbers each game, as well as a six tab spreadsheet for tracking what I'm up to. It all scratches the itch I have to feel like I'm busy with something. I feel like my life would feel a bit empty if the NSFL wasn’t a part of my life.
It's also been a way to keep learning and growing as a person. At the beginning of August, I knew basically nothing about football, and being in the league places me in the thick of a lot of football talk. It's a great environment to sit back and learn from people with a lot of passion for the game.”
Ironside: “You’ve been recently named as the Queen of the S18 draft class. How have you taken your new role and what was it like to receive such a prestigious position?”
Bex: “It's truly an honor and a privilege. I've said it a few times, and I'll keep saying it. This class is astounding. Each and every one of us has something great to offer. So to be highlighted in this way is unexpected and deeply humbling. I've been doing my best to live up to the esteem my fellow rookies have for me. I wouldn’t be on the throne without them.”
Ironside: “Since taking the role, it has become obvious that you are one of the few voices of reason that the rambunctious S18 draft class actually listens to. GMs have taken notice. With this natural leadership ability, would you ever consider GMing a team yourself?”
Bex: “I think it took about 5 days from me signing up for the league to me making the joke about becoming a GM. And thinking about it, it really wasn't that much of a joke. In my personal life, I've always striven to be a leader. I love being able to support people and push them to be their best selves. Doing that in a GM capacity absolutely appeals to me. I do think I'm a little far off from that dream coming true, but it's alive and well in my heart. I have some growing to do before I'm ready to step into that role.”
Ironside: “There is a bit of a cult following in the league for a game called Werewolf. You recently participated in your first round. What was that experience like and would you advise others to get involved with the Werewolf scene?”
Bex: “Where does one even start with Werewolf? Game 18 was my first one, and it was a wild time. I have a lot of fun, despite the stress.
The big problem is that I have some habits that don't translate well to WW. I'm what we call a "lurker". Meaning I tend to watch things unfold and only jump in when I either have something to say or when I need to defend myself. This can read as pretty suspicious to others, so it's been a weird thing to try and train myself out of.
I absolutely recommend Werewolf to anyone who thinks they want to give it a try, with the warning that it can be really stressful. It can absolutely rule your life with a game is running if you let it. So if you're joining, I recommend picking a game that's running when you know you'll have some free time.”
Ironside: “You went highly in the DSFL draft, falling into the first round. People are already talking about this class entering the NSFL and there are a few pundits who think you have a real shot at racing for top three in that draft. Is this something you plan on aiming for? If so, what would you tell prospective NSFL teams that are looking to make a gamble on you early?”
Bex: “It feels a bit early for NSFL speculation to me. Don't get me wrong, I would absolutely love to be one of the first three. But I won't pretend that this class doesn't offer some seriously strong competition. If I can go in the first round or even top of the second round, I'll consider that a success.
To any team who thinks they might want to grab me right out of the gate, I'd like you to know I am absolutely worth it. I'm willing to put in the hard work to stay competitive in this league. I’m coachable, I’m hungry to do my best, and I’m a great person to have in the locker room.”
ironside: “With that in mind, you’re currently sitting on the roster of the Norfolk Seawolves. Norfolk is widely considered an underdog that will struggle to compete this season. Do you find yourself at home in Norfolk or is it just a stepping stone to that next level?”
Bex: “I love Norfolk, but I'll be the first to admit that we are not what I would call good. What we lack in wins, we make up for in excellent locker room stories. I have no regrets about being with the Seawolves this season, even if we aren't destined to win the Ultimini.
It is sort of a stepping stone if we're being honest. If I go to an NSFL team that doesn't need me right away, I'm more than happy to be sent back down to the Seawolves next season. But it's all with the knowledge that Norfolk was never going to be a permanent home. It's always been a transitional space for me.”
Ironside: “You’ve now had experience with the league and gotten a pretty good look at how everything operates. Is there anything that you have found difficult or that you would change in the league for ease of access? Was there information you’d provide for new players that you might have wanted to know sooner in your journey into the NSFL?”
Bex: “I was pleasantly surprised to see how well laid out the forums are once you actually dive into them. Yes, there's a lot going on, but after you've poked around a bit, it's not too hard to find what you're looking for. The frustrating thing is finding outdated information that can be confusing. Cleaning up or updating things, especially rookie-facing posts would be immensely helpful.
I had so much one on one help for my transition to the league. My friend was the one who got me into it, so I was throwing questions at him pretty much constantly as I was learning my way around. That worked well for me, but that's just not sustainable for everyone, especially thinking about how big these draft classes can be. With that in mind, my first piece of advice for new players is to make use of the Rookie Mentors. They exist for a reason. Make them earn their paychecks.”
Ironside: “You’ve had your first look at gameplay in the league. You’ve seen what you can do out there and you know how Norfolk plans to use you. Realistically, what do you think you can achieve this season as a player?”
Bex: “I want into the 2k club so badly. I don't know that I'll quite make it this season, but I'm still holding a little hope for it. Speaking realistically, if the rest of the season follows close to the average we saw from weeks one and two, I can get right around 1.8k. Now, my numbers might drop a bit with upcoming changes for Norfolk. But either way, if I come out with the most rushing yards for the DSFL this season, we'll call it good.”
Ironside: “You’ve gotten to know a lot of the players in the NSFL at this point and you have a basic idea of what NSFL locker room culture might look like. What teams are on the Queen’s wishlist at the moment?”
Bex: “Oh, this is such a tough question. I want to go somewhere that's going to help me to grow as a player, with teammates who are willing to support me as I continue to learn the ropes. Now, that doesn't seem to really narrow down the list. At the end of the day, I believe I could be happy almost anywhere.”
Ironside: “Norfolk recently announced that they are acquiring a new starter at the quarterback position and are sending Gimmy Jaroppolo back home. What are your feelings on the situation and how do you think you’ll adjust to a new signal caller on the team?”
Bex: “I know that Gimmy is sort of a taboo topic for some. Love him or hate him, he was what Norfolk had for the beginning of the season. We tried our best to make it work. At the end of the day, I think we could all tell he wasn’t happy to be in Norfolk. We've sent him back to Tijuana, and I'm glad to have Johnson Harding stepping up. He's a great kid, and he's been getting along with the team really well so far. I see his addition to the team as a step up for us Seawolves.”
Ironside: “Recently an author known as GimmyFan69 has called you out as both lackluster player and a bad apple in the locker room. Did you expect to find critics so soon in your career and what would you say to this one?”
Bex: “I was absolutely expecting critics, though this one isn’t quite what I was expecting. There’s plenty to critique when it comes to my performance. I’m not perfect. But to attack my locker room presence? That seems so incredibly silly. GimmyFan69 has no idea what I’m like off the field. They pointed out that I went out after a game with friends, which I have to laugh at. My dad flew halfway around the world to come to a game. So yes, I took him out to dinner instead of heading out with the team. If prioritizing family every once and a while makes you a bad apple, then I’ll bear that title proudly. But at the end of the day, the boys on the team are an extension of my family, and I’ll do anything I can to be there for them.
So yes, GimmyFan69, if you’re listening, here’s what I’ve got to say to you:
Your golden boy? I’ve seen him close to tears. I was there for him when everyone else was tearing him down. Because he was on my team, and I take care of my team. So you can come for my performance on the field all day long, and we won’t have a problem. But you don’t get to touch my presence in the locker room.”
Ironside: “Thank you for taking the time to do this. Is there anything else you would like to add about the league or say to your fellow players that we may have not quite touched on with our questions?”
Bex: “S18, stay beautiful! I can’t wait to see all that you’ll accomplish this season and beyond.”
Ironside: "That's all we have time for today and I hope you all enjoyed this interview with the Queen!"
