Last time on Hard Knocks…
We followed Arizona Outlaws Rookies through the beginning of training camp. We got to see them get acclimated with the Outlaws drills, more specifically the Defensive Backs, and the Receivers. Namely, we saw Boogie and Erikson struggle with the heat, as well as Law and Zhang trying to stay cool.
Drills were routine, working on footwork and agility for DBs and WRs, while the Lineman focused more on the line dummies for strength and explosiveness.
We pick up this week's episode where we follow the rookies into their first preseason game, learn some players won’t be sticking around, talk with a few new guys, and learn about the rookies’ future with the team.
We find the team in their final film study before their first Preseason match-up versus the Orange County Otters. Veterans and coaches alike share some words for the new players to prepare them for both the Preseason and all that lies after.
“Look, rooks. A lot of people and picks were moved last season, so if you don’t make it into the starting roster, you always have a chance of going somewhere where you will make an impact. So all you have to do here is show up, show out, and prove you deserve to play” states veteran Safety, Ryan Flock.
Comedian and Backup Defensive Tackle snatches the floor and belts out “You guys are good, they’re not. Let’s win.” Of course nobody laughs, while Flock and Coach Chess drag him off the stage.
Head Coach Dwyer steps forward and lays the law down. “Do good or I’ll trade you to the Legion.” If That doesn’t motivate you, you very well might be heading to Las Vegas very soon.
As the day winds down, shortly before practice ends, Mayran Jackson is asked to see coach Dwyer by one of the interns.
"I don't know, man, he wouldn't tell me even if I asked. He just said he wants to see you."
"Come on in," Dwyer shouts as Jackson knocks on his office door.
"How's it going, you wanted to see me?"
"Yeah. And you know I don't like having to call anyone up here, because I usually don't get to give anybody the good news, but you gotta do what you gotta do, right?”
Dwyer displays a somewhat solemn look before breaking the news.
“Anyways, we're trading you and Vash to the Yeti. Phillipe Carter and Big Bot are coming here."
Initially Jackson didn't want to play in Arizona, so this trade works out for him. He's still a young player, despite his veteran status, and with two Ultimus trophies under his belt, he'll receive his due respect and pay anywhere he goes.
"Alright, I understand. I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to play here, sir."
`
"Sure, sure. And I know it wasn't always smooth, but I'm grateful you rode it out with us, and I know you'll go on to do great things no matter where you're playing. Noble's a hell of a quarterback. Oh, and could you send in Vash if you see him? Thanks, Jackson."
The two exchange a handshake and Jackson is off. The Outlaws and former Outlaws will meet again for what will likely be deemed a revenge game in week four when the Yeti come to Arizona.
Some teammates received the news that day, while others didn't hear about it until later on that night, or even the following day. One of those late to receive the news was the one that fantasy football owners would consider a benefactor of the situation, Dustin Evans, new number one wide receiver.
“You know, it's football. Jackson was an integral part of our group, but this is a business, and it's the nature of the game. Chess and I are gonna move on, we're gonna keep getting better, and nothing is going to change about the way we play the game.”
As the week comes to a close, preseason is fast approaching. Week one is the perfect opportunity to introduce rookies to the bitter OCO - AZ rivalry and get them acclimated to the intensity of an NSFL game.
“These guys are fast. They're really quick on their feet. Harris, what are they,” Coach E. asked of the partially present rookie cornerback.
“Fast, coach,” he unenthusiastically replied.
“Way to wake up. Listen. You rookies especially need to hear this. They're not gonna wait for you! I don't care how much talent you think you have, they're physical, they're quick, and they're gonna pop you in the mouth before every route they run. If you're not ready to react you're gonna get beat all game. I don't care if this is preseason, or the Ultimus, you're playing for your jobs, nobody here is irreplaceable.”
Harrif Ernston gives a pre-game talk to the team, hoping to hype them up. Dwyer and Charles Albert loom over the field from the box, where they'll be calling plays. Trainers stretch with some of the players on their respective sides of the field.
The crowd is thinner than a regular season game would draw, but still respectable.
The game begins as Ronaldo lets it fly into the end zone. From there the teams seem locked in a stalemate as there are three three-and-outs in a row before the Outlaws receive the ball and put together a drive. The team has gone 53 yards, and it’s 3rd and 7 in the redzone. Samuel Zhang is lined up outside, with two receivers on the other side. Bronko takes the snap, three-step drop, and delivers a laser right into the rookies chest. TOUCHDOWN! Zhang is able to snag his first touchdown off a quick hit in his first taste of the NSFL.
Another drive fizzles out in what was supposed to be a response for the Otters. We pick back up after an Outlaws’ First Down. Handoff to Reg only nets 4 yards. Next play Bronko sizes the defense up. Drops back to pass, scrambles to buy time, and gets hit as he throws! INTERCEPTION, Dominic Verns swoops down and jumps Mackworthy’s route and is able to get 12 yards before being brought down by the speedy back.
Various players of the Defense, obviously disappointed they have to go back out on the field after a short break,
“Come on fellas, we just gotta get the ball back, and we can get our rest” Er proclaims.
“They haven’t been able to run it on us, so look for them to get that ball to Phelps. We’ll be helping over top” the two safeties say with confidence.
Bronko walking off the field passes by Rookie Franklin Harris Jr. as they both exchange glances. “Don’t give em’ anything, rook” Bronko says before knocking helmets with Harris.
Start of the Otters Drive, they line up in an obvious passing formation. Boss takes the snap, PLAY ACTION, he rolls out and throws a strike to Westfield. The ball is batted up by Harris, who CATCHES IT AND STARTS RUNNING. An absolute footrace as Harris stumbles all the way to the 12 yard line before being tackled. A 55 yard return! The rookie is showered in hits as he runs back to the sideline before jumping and knocking Coach Dwyer down in mid air.
The momentum sadly doesn’t stay with the Outlaws, as after three plays Ronaldo comes out for the Field Goal. Points are Points, as they say, and the lead is extended.
The game goes back and forth, with One Touchdown from a Mackworthy run, and One Field Goal from Ronaldo before the Otters are able to answer. A quick 3 yard strike to Westfield gets points on the board for the struggling team from Orange County. It doesn’t matter though, because three plays later Bronko lobs one up to Dustin Evans who takes it in stride for a 41 yard catch and run for the score.
With 2:16 left in the First Half we turn our attention to the newly added vet. Phillipe Carter, lined up on Star Receiver Robert Phelps, gets a great press, and is able to stay in tight before, INTERCEPTION, Carter snags the pass intended for Phelps and is able to fall forward.
After some more back and forth, the Otters are able to score through a rushing touchdown to lessen the deficit. Now we fast forward, nearing the end of the game, back in the redzone. Goalline set. Bronko drops back and throws the fade to the rookie tight end. TOUCHDOWN. Charlie Law hauls it down over the Otters Safety. Law marches around before sending it directly into the turf, where it will remain buried for eternity. We see later in the game that Law had a chance to double his tally, but he watches the ball slip through his hands. Next play they hand it off to the reliable body of Reg Mackworthy. The rookie will definitely make sure to capitalize on his opportunities in the future.
Final Score:
Outlaws - 41
Otters - 14
The next game featured another blowout victory, as the Outlaws took care of business scoring 52 points versus a Liberty that could only muster 10 points. Much more of a veteran carried game, as rookies didn’t make much of an impact on the score sheet. Franklin Harris Jr. finished with two deflections and an interception, and Godfrey King finished with another sack, two in two games.
Then we move on to the game against the Sabercats, where King Bronko was suffering from terrible diarrhea. As the coaches struggled to find somebody to play quarterback, as they didn’t have a backup this week, Defensive Tackle Arbin Asipi stepped right up, even though most players didn’t want him to. When Bronko could control his booty, he was able to throw 7 completions for 40 yards, but it doesn’t matter if you can’t score. Asipi was able to complete 6 passes and 2 to the other team, so he’s already doing just as well as Ethan Hunt.
This game was won solely by the defense. Ryan Flock opened the scoring with a 61 yard pick-six, and closed the touchdown scoring with another 23 yard pick-six. Ronaldo finished all scoring with a 26 yard field goal with 21 seconds. Harris Jr. is able to keep his streak alive, and is at three games with a pick in each. Game finishes with the Outlaws able to post 23 points to 10.
Final Preseason game is up, a face-off against the Liberty. This game goes according to play for the Outlaws, even though it is a little closer than they’d like. This game showcased a touchdown by both Mackworthy and Rookie Running Back Jaxon Tuck, and the end of a streak. Franklin Harris Jr. wasn’t able to force an interception this game, but his work on the outside made it easier for vet Harrif Ernston to snag one early in the third quarter. Ending with a score of 27 to 23 after a late touchdown catch from Dustin Evans.
A four up four down schedule for the Outlaws, as they set their mark and have once again proven that they’re no less than serious about three-peating. The rookies have proven their worth, for what it’s worth in the preseason, at least, and for now, Dwyer and C.A. are more than content with their young players and how the Jackson trade has panned out for them thus far.
Next week, on NSFL Hard Knocks: Our cameras love one rookie in particular, as we head into the regular season, anxious to see them play their role when it counts. Phillipe Carter talks trade impact, and what it’s been like so far acclimating to life in the desert. We’ll be recapping the week one regular season game where the Outlaws attempt to tackle the San Jose Sabercats after their GM change. Finally, Outlaws’ Co-GM Charles Albert talks week one and will be aiding us in the recap as we break down what goes wrong, what goes right, and what he sees in the future for his young rookies.
