For each of the first 2 seasons, my co-GM (Longshaw for S1, Hawk for S2) & I voted on team awards, but I was too lazy to actually write them up for public viewing. After multiple requests from my guys to bring them back, I'm actually gonna get it done this time. It's the least I can do after all the hard work they've put in for me.
Our first award is for Offensive Player of the Year, awarded to the player who has the best offensive sim performance over the course of the season.
For S1, this could've gone a couple different ways because we had standouts at RB & WR, so ultimately it did come down partially to activity & LR presence to break the tie. In the end, we gave the award to Bailey Cook. His 1062 receiving yards were among the league leaders despite our team struggles & some question marks at the QB position.
In S2, we had a significant spike in offensive production, especially in our passing game. That can be attributed, in large part, to quarterback Ethan Hunt. After coming here in a deadline deal in S1 from Orange County, Hunt got off to a strong start & it continued throughout S2.
In S3, we watched a breakout star reveal himself. In his first full season out of the shadows of Cook, Shane Weston piled up over 1200 receiving yards, despite still not being our primary WR in the depth chart for a decent part of the season. My pick for best WR league-wide, Weston was the clear choice for this award.
Our next award is for Defensive Player of the Year. Pretty self-explanatory, this award is for the player who has the best defensive sim performance all season long.
Typically we wouldn't give an award to a semi-active, but in S1, Ben & I both had the same player down for DPOY league-wide, making it difficult to rationalize giving the award to anyone else but Alexander Selich. After being our first selection in the inaugural NSFL Draft, Selich had a monster first season, racking up 128 tackles, 7 sacks & 6 passes defended.
In S2, John Canton had a big season, shattering the league record with a whopping 23 passes defended. His excellence in our secondary made him the obvious choice for this award.
In S3, we emerged as one of the toughest defenses in the league, but one man stood out above the rest. Dan Miller had been among the league leaders in TPE for quite some time, but never really lived up to the hype on the field... until now. Miller had an absolutely spectacular season, racking up 81 tackles, 4 forced fumbles (2 recovered) & a staggering 24 sacks.
The next award is our first non sim-related award. The "Heart" Award is given to the player that shows the most dedication to the team & best represents what it means to be a SaberCat.
In S1, this was a really tough call because we had so many guys busting their asses for us all season long. Ultimately, the award went to Dan Miller. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anyone because he ended up being hand-picked as my co less than a season later, before moving onto bigger & better things as a member of the league's head office.
In S2, we again had a bunch of guys deserving of this award, but we eventually gave it to none other than Vincent Sharpei. Again, not much of a surprise considering he was pegged as my co after Hawk was hired by HO.
In S3, we once again had a bunch of guys putting in countless hours of hard work, but sadly we could only pick one. In the first 2 seasons, we had a revolving door at cornerback across from Canton, but this time we finally found our guy. Benson Bayley busted his ass day in & day out, knowing he'd be starting as a true rookie against established vets. There's a reason we used our 1st round pick on him & it's arguably the best decision I've made since this league started.
Something I experimented with in S1 was our Fans' Choice Award as a way to get our players involved. I put up a poll of all our actives & let the guys decide who took home this award.
After the votes were tallied, the recipient of this award was AC Hackett. Despite being overshadowed by Selich, Hackett still had a solid year, racking up 93 tackles & 6 sacks.
Seeing as this award had no clear definition, I decided to switch it up for S2 & replace this with the Unsung Hero Award. That seemed to be how the guys interpreted the Fans' Choice Award & changing the name made it much less ambiguous.
In S2, we had one player in particular step out of the shadows & really have a breakout year once he got the WR1 role following Cook's departure. I'm talking, of course, about Shane Weston. Shane came just short of Cook's mark of 1062 receiving yards despite playing the first 9 games as our WR2.
Our unsung hero in S3 would have to go to a guy that's not exactly the most vocal, but he's just as much a part of this team as anyone. Chidubem Okonkwo has been a rock for us on the defensive line, where good help has been hard to come by. Okonkwo recorded 42 tackles, which may not be overwhelming, but his 15 tackles for loss & 6 sacks sure were.
Now for our final award, the one you've all been waiting for, Most Valuable Player. No need to explain, so let's just get right to it.
In S1, it was a pretty simple choice. Despite Selich's monster season, an active beats out a semi-active every time as long as their sim performance is even close. Our first MVP award goes to Bailey Cook. Unfortunately, he's since left us for the great white north, but no hard feelings there.
In S2, this decision was a little less clear. Canton had a great season in our defensive secondary, but Hunt took our pass game to a whole new level & needed to be rewarded for it. Hunt has since changed his name & shipped off to Middle-of-nowhere, Canada. My guess is he was ashamed of his behavior this past offseason, but this is purely conjecture.
For S3, this was a tough call. Weston & Miller were both the best in the league at their respective positions, at least in our opinion, but again only one could take home the award. Seeing as our team has been known for our defense, our MVP would have to go to Dan Miller. While some people may see his sudden breakout as a fluke, we see it as the emergence of a budding superstar & expect this kind of production from him for many seasons to come.
Thank you all for joining us & congrats to all our award winners!
