If I commit a crime, and there is a precedent from before I was born, they still follow that precedent regardless of my knowledge of it. Tough luck.
If you have to ask if something is ok (i.e. going to the rulebook) that task is probably in the wrong until proven otherwise by reading the rulebook. I do not think "valid reasoning" would overturn this as many people have said "valid reason" means nothing in terms of rules, so the correct action would be to ask someone of authority.
The Catch Rule in the NFL is a big controversy and has a butt load of grey area. We understand that the catch rule has grey area, but we still follow it until an official change is made, and it is up to the discretion of the ref, or video reply analyst expert Mike Peroria (SP?) And his crew.
