(S6) - PT4 - Frustrations

I'm frustrated that Angus Winchester isn't head and shoulders ahead of the defensive competition this season. Last season he had an outside shot at being LBoY or maybe DPoY as he was leading the league in sacks. This season he's been neck and neck with Dan Miller all season and it's looking like both will struggle to break 20 sacks, the production simply isn't there for either of them. Meanwhile the defensive backs around the league are having a grand old time with all their INTs and PDs and even a few sacks there too. Us linebackers? Nah, not our season.

Makes me wonder if I caused part of this by altering the playbooks. Suddenly all of us are working different schemes and such. By pulling our 43U Corner Blitz I removed one SLB blitz from the playbook as it was RCB and SLB who blitzed on that play. Could it be my fault that as a SLB I am seeing lower production? Could I be the beginning of my own end as Angus Winchester peaks and then settles down as merely a mediocre defensive player who will never rise to the level of being the best in the league? I don't know, but it is frustrating I guess.

After going to the Ultimus in back to back seasons the Yellowknife Wraiths seemed poised to be a top team in the league yet again. With only five games left in the season it would appear that the Wraiths will be lucky if they can make the playoffs. A 4-4-1 record puts Yellowknife in third place in the NSFC but they are only 1.5 wins away from taking the division lead so it might not seem so hopeless from the outside looking in. However, the Wraiths offence is sputtering and currently ranks 5th in the entire league and starting quarterback Mats Akselsen shoulders much of the blame. Nine touchdowns in nine games is not enough to get it done; a lack of weapons outside of star running back Eric Kennedy might be holding Yellowknife back. On the other side of the ball it certainly has to be frustrating for the defence. The Wraith's defence is tied for third least points against, the boys are doing their job when called upon. One could wonder if there is dissension in the locker due to the offence not being able to do their job and one would be wondering right. The defence constantly lambastes the shitty QB for his woefully inconsistent play.

The only frustrations I've experienced in my first season with the New Orleans Second Line are ones of the sexual variety. You're probably thinking "Jeeze, Poopyface. Too much information". Normally I wouldn't blame you, but I am about to drop an earth shattering piece of news that will make you forget all about that. Before I say anything I should note that I am revealing top secret stuff here and if I go missing then the first person you should question is none other than New Orleans Second Line general manager Borkus Maximus III. As part of our rookie hazing our GM decided it would be funny to force us to wear chastity belts while away from the team. It has made my first season hear nothing short of hell. I am a rich professional athlete in a major city and this motherfucker wants to prevent me from getting any action? I knew Borkus had an unusual sense of humor but this is just sick and twisted. To make matters worse, I actually accidentally subjected myself to this fate because I didn't read the fine print on my contract stating that I sign over all rights to my body and personal well-being to Borkus Maximus III as part of my contractual obligation to the New Orleans Second Line. My only hope is that someone from the NSFLPA can step in and champion my cause as I seek to awaken from this dreadful nightmare.

Expectations were big for Boss Tweed entering this season. He had just broken 1000 TPE and had been named the #3 player in the league in the Top 50 rankings. The Yeti invested heavily in run blocking for their offensive line and Sebasation Joyce switched to a fullback to provide the Yeti with a lead blocker. Everything was coming together for Tweed to have a big year after under performing in his last two years and to maybe have a chance at finally winning the running back of the year award. So naturally, he has been one of the worst running backs in the league this year. The running back buffs have been great as 6 of 8 starting backs are 4 yards per carry or better this season. However, Tweed is one of the 2 running backs who isn't as his YPC is a poor 3.7 right now. Usually the argument could be made that Tweed was less efficient due to having one of the largest workloads among running backs. However, this year he is tied for 5th most carries among running backs. Somehow, despite less usage, he has only gotten less efficient relative to other running backs. This is a concerning trend considering that Tweed has been regressing relative to other running backs since Season 4 despite continuing to improve and earn TPE at a good rate. With Tweed running out of attributes to improve and nearing regression while the younger running backs outperforming him will only continue to improve, it's possible he may never be a top performing running back again at this point. This is Tweed's 5th year as the best running back by TPE, but he has never been able to win running back of the year so far and that looks unlikely to happen in the next few years at this point. It's hard to argue any player has been more disappointing relative to their TPE level this season. Playing on a 0-9 team hasn't helped the frustration for Tweed this season. Tweed's last 2 games have looked better so hopefully it's a sign that he'll be able to have a big finish to the season and build some momentum heading into the final year of his prime.

At the beginning of the season, as with any team, the Baltimore Hawks’ locker room was full of hope with what the upcoming season could become. The Hawks had mad back to back Ultimus Bowls in season 2 and 3 but failed to make the playoffs in season 4 for the first time since the inaugural NSFL season. Season 5 saw the Hawks return to the playoffs, and although they failed to make the Ultimus, it was a glimmer of hope for Hawks organization. The season started well enough, the Hawks beat the Yeti in Colorado to and beat the Liberty in week 2, a team many had picked to finish ahead of them. The next three weeks were a different story though. Starting with a week 3 loss in Yellowknife, which was immediately followed by 2 heart breaking losses, week 4 at home versus Arizona, by 3 points, and San Jose at home during week 5 by just 2 points. Week 6 saw a confidence builder in a victory over the Second Line, while week 7 shocked most in the NSFL, as the Hawks handed the Otters their first loss of the season, in Orange County, no less. Week 8 saw another heart breaker against the Outlaws, while week 9 saw a much closer than expected victory over the Second Line. So here we stand, at a 5-4 record with our next two opponents combining for a 15-3 record. Not exactly where we wanted to be. Unrelated, why the hell is Owen Taylor terrified of entering the end zone?

Terrell Brister didn’t plan for the New Orleans Second line to do very well this year. The team has one win as of right now and still has a long way to go before they even sniff an Ultimus. However, he did plan to actually show up on the stats sheet after a great rookie year. He’s still locked up some trash talking rookies (cough Dwayne Aaron cough) but he hasn’t had any picks. Last year he has an incredible year grabbing 4 interceptions with 21 pass defenses and he won defensive rookie of the year (along with Ryan Sierra, his former teammate in Tijuana). To Brister that now seems like so long ago. How could he have gone from one of the best CB’s in the league stats wise to some scrub? As of right now he only has 6 pass defenses and its not looking too much better for him, or the New Orleans Second Line. Coming into his sophomore year he thought he had a shot at having another great season however it obviously isn’t the case. He isn’t even coming close to what his tackles were last season either. He only has 29 as of now.

At the end of the Luchadores S5 season, me and jaskins were looking forward to the S6 season and had extremely high hopes, holding a slew of top 20 draft picks. As the season neared, we were trying effortlessly to make a deal for the DSFL star Howard Miller, who had played for us during the S5 season. Unfortunately, we were not able to land Miller back in Tijuana, but we still felt good about our upcoming draft. Until we saw the amount of available prospects on the board. It is no surprise to anyone that the S6 DSFL draft was a very shallow one, with only a handful of players drafted actually staying active into the regular season. Our #3 overall pick, Sam Penner has been our only active player out of the prospects we drafted. The new creates coming off of the waiver wire however has made the S7 draft class not such a terrible class. Players like L'alto, Danger, and Vranos have been cornerstones for our team and active locker room members, all coming out of the waiver wire. The luchadores season is only just getting started, but it was frustrating to not have lots of active and available talent at the time of the draft.

I mean, I pretty much did a huge article on being frustrated in Colorado this season. The most recent games didn’t make it any better. We’re still losing, and we’re 0-11 now. That’s just completely unacceptable, and everyone on the team knows it. From the rookies all the way up to management, we agree that its unacceptable. We were only really in one game so far this season, our more recent loss to New Orleans at home was our best chance at breaking the goose egg. We already know the Pierno as a rushing QB experiment is a bust. Word on the street is that he’s going to become more of a pocket passer and we can build around him the right way finally. Boss Tweed is still a complete stud. We’re going to have 2 first round picks, and we may make some trades to get some more. My ‘CoLOLardo’ article was a microcosm of all of the bullshit frustration, bad playbooks, locker room arguing, and just everything coming to a head. But yeah, there was some real passion behind it. I want to win, you know? I want to be able to show up to the stadium each and every day and know that I have a chance to beat the shit out of our opponents. And while it’s not happening right now, it’s going to happen. People are reenergized and refocused. We can do this. Probably. (239)

You can always be the best all the time and that’s the truth when it comes to Bradley Westfield. Several years in a row he has been number 1 in the yards category and seems to have an amazing yards per catch over his career. This year despite actually feeling more agile, smarter, and like he could run forever he just doesn’t seem to be himself. I think it’s just a symptom of seeing fellow teammate Yates run what seems to be forever and quickly at that. Yates is a monster wherever he lines up on the field. He is just so fast and cannot be caught. Westfield isnt calling it quits yet, he still has a lot left in the tank. This is about the time that a receiver might start slowing down or becoming stagnant like fellow receiver Josh Garden. Garden is still a force on the field but he doesnt seem to be pushing quite like he used too. All in all it has been completely frustrating year as Westfield has found the endzone 11 times through the air and has managed 2 more trips with punt returns. Westfield also managed a new record in the NSFL with an 82 yards reception.

The Kansas City Coyotes got off to a rip-roaring start, heading into week 10 with a 7-2 record, the most efficient offense in the league, control of their playoff destiny, and perhaps most importantly a chance to all but clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs with wins against the Marshals at home and on the road against the Luchadores. That all sounds pretty good, why the mournful tone you ask? Because KCC laid a pair of particularly foul eggs in weeks 10 and 11, losing to the Marshals decisively and getting ground down in Tijuana. The most efficient offense in the league up till that point turned the ball over eight times in two games, with QB Mark Strike tossing 7 interceptions. When asked to comment on the situation Coyotes management was unwilling to lay the blame on the offense. “We screwed it up…. Nothing else to it really, that offense is the same one that came out and ran circles around people for the last seven weeks.” Nothing out of Coyote land seems to suggest that KCC is interested in overhauling the offense this late into the season, instead preferring to trust the trio of Strike, Miller, and Rainey that have gotten them this far to take them to the promised land come playoff time.
