With only a few games left in the season a lot of management teams in the NSFL have started to look towards the offseason and get a plan going with what they want to do. This is especially true for teams like us that are definitely not in the playoff hunt this season. Now there have been some widespread rumors that our defense is going to be decimated by the upcoming regression and that we're going to lose a TON of defensive players. Now that we've hit that time of season I've run the calculations and by my numbers we are only actually losing four total defensive players and six players in total. That's not to say that with the regression we may have some sub par inactives left over, but it's not nearly the Swiss cheese that one would lead you to believe. Add in the fact that we have some prime candidates to play both sides of the ball, things don't get quite as bad as was led to believe. To get a better picture of the state of the team, let's take a look at what we're losing, what we've still got, and what we're gaining.
Off to the Glue Factory
QB - Logan Noble
Truely the only quarterback capable of filling the shoes of Tyler Oles will finally ride off into the sunset on what will surely be a sad day for many around the NSFL. This offseason many factors will come into play as to why Noble will no longer be around, such as Adriana Falconi coming up to the show, but the main factor is that in this next regression cycle he will finally dip below that magical mark that says he has to hang them up. A Liberty legend, Noble has gone an impressive 4-22 so far as our starter throwing for just under 4k yards with 6 touchdowns and 28 interceptions with a couple games left to play.
WR - Stormblessed
Stormblessed was once a receiver you could look at as a 800 to 1K yard receiver his first few four years in the league, but since then dipped a bit and had been averaging around 500 yards a year since. That was until Noble came to town. In Noble's first season he was used mostly in a reserve role in the run heavy offense only picking up 15 receiving yards and doing the bulk of his work on special teams, a place that he has served dutifully on in his entire NSFL career. This season though was a bit of a resurgence for him, especially after we traded away both Carter Bush and Josh Garden. With both those wide receivers out of his way he now became the a second option for Noble to throw to behind a guy we picked up off the streets in Grey Slax. This year his receiving total has jumped all the way up to 240 yards at almost 10 yards a reception. Not bad for his final rodeo.
DE - Dental Dam
If ever there was such a name. Dam has been a great teammate to have off the field as he's damn funny, but let's be honest, when he's on the field this season he's been nothing short of a liability. Most times it seems like he's ready to head to the bench and put some ice on his old knees and huff some oxygen. He really hasn't done much for us this season stats wise as he's only picked up 8 tackles and a couple sacks.
DB - Alex Hayden
Hayden is going to actually be the first guy on the list that will kind of suck to lose. He's done a pretty serviceable job for us the last couple seasons and is our fifth leading tackler this season. He always seems to be around the ball although, this season he can't seem to bring people down and may have lost a step in coverage. He's still broken up 8 passes and picked off a couple though, which has been cool for a little bit of excitement on defense this year. Last season though he was huge defending 14 passes being pretty good against opposing WRs and a big part of why we were able to squeak out 4 wins. In many ways Hayden has been a truly consistent player wherever he goes, always seeming to be around the ball, not picking off many passes, but managing to knock stuff away when thrown in his direction.
DB - Dominic Verns
Verns and Hayden have kind of been like a Batman and Robin duo in our secondary the past couple seasons. Where Hayden knocks things away at a high volume, Verns doesn't do much of that, but has a higher volume of interceptions. Verns has kind of been our roaming safety and helping take down defenders in gang tackles. Last season he provided a great deal of excitement as he returned two of his interceptions all the way for touchdowns. Another one of our better defensive backs who has hit regression pretty hard he'll be another one to hang them up after this season.
DB - Ragnar Kronen
Kronen was a player we picked up off of free agency this season as we needed a defensive back to get to minimums. He really hasn't done a ton for us on defense, which is kind of a let down, but what he has done is been flexible enough to allow us to play him all over the field. He even has had four receptions for 33 yards as we needed someone to fill in in a pinch immediately after we traded Garden and he was the first to put his hand up.
What We Have
Offense
As of right now the only player I actually have penciled in as 100% being on the roster next season is Marquise Brown (@YoungTB). Brown is an awesome running back who has been our bell cow and basically all of our offense this season as he marched his way into the NSFL record books breaking the single season record for rushing yards and with two games yet to play. I know he's gotten a ton of flack from others around the league saying he's a system back and not that great, but let's be honest, when you have Noble as your quarterback that greatly limits what your offense can do, meaning that opposing defenses already know that it's going to be a run play 90% of the time and can completely sell out on that and for him to still put up the numbers he did despite all of that is damn impressive. We do have a couple others that we could bring back in Steven O'Sullivan and Conall O'Sullivan, but as of now we have opt for other options available to us instead as we'll discuss a bit later.
Defense
When I took a look at what's supposed to be an entire defense retiring according to some certain mouths around the league, my jaw almost dropped to the floor when I saw that I could slot in 6 returning players. But....but I thought our entire defense was retiring? Hmmm guess some people can't do maths or just like to think they know more than they actually do. On the defensive line I'll of course be returning and my running mate this season, Drew Davidson, will be returning as well which make up 2 of the top 4 dudes to play in other teams' backfields so far this season. For the linebackers we have a trio returning in Perry Tucker, Jaylon Lee, and rookie Jesse Marchand. Lee and Tucker will have fought off regression for one more season, which is great as they've played just about every position on our defense over the past two seasons and Marchand has been pretty good especially in pass coverage. Our secondary is the major position taking a hit as Lucari Felix (@Official DT) is the only returning member for next season. Felix has been great this season picking off 3 passes and having 13 pass defenses and also filling in on special teams and running a few routes on offense.
Who We're Gaining
QB - Adriana Falconi - @enigmatic
Falconi is someone we're extremely exited about as already she is more of a talent than Logan "4 Win" Noble was and she hasn't even stepped foot into the Philadelphia training complex yet. There have been some knocks on here as people look at her DSFL statistics, but honestly we don't put too much weight into that. So far in her DSFL career she has always been in a two quarterback system, something I feel has done her quite a bit of disservice, because as a quarterback it doesn't really let you get into any kind of a rhythm when you're constantly being subbed in and out. We're excited to get her here and running our offense entirely on her own and I think it'll be a good compliment and added bonus to have Marquise Brown for her to work with.
RB - Achilles Hondo - @HalfEatenOnionBagel
While being listed officially as a running back, Hondo will mostly be used as a traditional fullback in most cases, but could actually be our change of pace/relief running back in non blocking situations as well. That last part is still up in the air as in those other situations, Hondo may actually be better suited being pushed out into a tight end role. That stuff is still in the air as he have many moving pieces right now for our offseason planning and nothing is set in stone at the moment. Overall I think Hondo is going to be a Swiss army knife type of player who we will be able to use in a ton of different places to give Falconi yet another option in the passing game as well as being that swift bulldozer to open even bigger holes to Brown in the run game.
WR - Carter Bush - @adam2552
We lent out Carter Bush this season to the Baltimore Hawks and it was known all along that Bush would be coming back to Philadelphia. Bush is a Philadelphia great and we're really excited to have him back next season and is the perfect lead wide receiver for Falconi to throw to. Even with Noble throwing him the ball last season, Bush still managed to get just under 1K yards receiving with 986. I think he'll have a lot more fun in the offense with Falconi throwing him the ball rather than Noble and in turn I think she'll take great comfort in having such a good and seasoned veteran to be able to rely on. Bush also played parts of this past season learning the defensive side of the ball playing off and on in our secondary. This is definitely an option again for next season to help with the defensive back void we'll be facing as he said he'd willing fill in where needed.
WR - Felix Hasselhoff - @`incitehysteria`
This is another of our draftees from last season that will be called up next season to take a wide receiver slot. Hasselhoff is a decorated DSFL player who brings a lot of excitement with his speed as he placed second last season in receiving yards with just over 1K. This season Hasselhof is once again in the second place spot, but is neck and neck and with two games left could potentially end up leading the entire DSFL. Either way, no matter where he finishes he brings elite route running and sure hands to our receiving corps and will be another receiver Falconi will be able to rely on going forward.
WR - Jordan von Matt - @JVMjrDOT
Yes, yet another receiver that will be joining us in Philadelphia for NSFL's 11th season. An afterthought in last season's crowded offense, von Matt has emerged this season as one of Kansas City's best offensive weapons as he leads the team in touchdown receptions with 5 and yards per reception at 13.5 and is second on the team in receiving yards with 635. Along with being an from the same alumni as me, von Matt is along the same lines of Hasselhoff in that he is a great technician running routes and has a good ability to catch passes in tight windows. I think adding Jordan along with Hasselhoff and Bush will create a good deal of balance between the passing game and our run game, taking a ton of pressure off of Brown and forcing opposing defenses to pick and choose, rather than keying in on the run every play.
LB - AJ Robertson - @Nathan_Hall
Possibly one of the only defensive players we have coming up from our current DSFL group, Robertson has been a stellar defensive player for the Luchadores having 114 tackles so far on the year with an interception and a fumble recovery. With Tucker and Lee on their last legs, Robertson will be a great addition to our defense and will allow us to do a number of different things personnel wise and I think him and Marchand will make a great duo for the coming years.
Question Marks and Position Battles
Conall O'Sullivan vs Ricky "Rico" Flores vs Achilles Hondo
This is kind of an interesting one as we don't have anyone slotted as the backup running back as of now, but have plenty of options available. This past season we picked up Conall O'Sullivan up last season and he didn't fare so great, only managing 209 yards at a 3.9 yards per carry pace, which is a bit under what we'd want for our backup running back. This season though he ran for 334 yards at a 4.7 yards per carry average which is very good. Even with his improvement in his second year in our system though I'm not sure if we're going to bring him back. What are our options though if we don't? One of those options is Achilles Hondo, the bowling ball of a man who picked up almost 300 yards on a 5.7 average. That has all the looks of a good change of pace back as he could power through defenders. The other option though is a player who is extremely similar to O'Sullivan in Ricky Flores. We picked up Flores with a late round pick in the last NSFL draft and he's a proven DSFL talent picking up almost 1k rushing yards last season and will most likely break that cusp this year while leading all of DSFL with 13 rushing touchdowns.
Steven O'Sullivan vs Emilia Rudd vs Achilles Hondo
This is yet another intriguing battle that Hondo finds himself in. Sure he's going to be a fullback and possibly running back, but there are also times where Hondo will be used as a tight end in formations that only have one back in the backfield, so that kind of creates the need to have another player on the roster to fill that spot when in fact we do have a fullback and a tight end at the same time or if we have a two tight end set. Because of that I think we can scratch Hondo out of this battle as there will still be a need for another, but who will that be? One possibility is Steven O'Sullivan who has worked dutifully for us the last two season, the only thing is that he hits yet another year of regression and at this point do we really need him as a blocker? He'll become almost useless in the passing game and I'm not sure if he'll really be worth a roster spot. The other immediate option I see is Emilia Rudd, one of our draft picks from last season. The appeal to Rudd vs O'Sullivan is that she's a bit more of a receiving threat with better speed and better hands. I don't think it'd be too bad of an idea to drop the blocking of O'Sullivan for yet another receiving option for Falconi, but again we'll have to run all the permutations and figure out the best one here.
Mike Miles
Mike Miles is an interesting case and a guy we've kept down in the DSFL for the last few seasons. The thing about Miles that has kind of prevented him from reaching the NSFL is the fact that he really isn't the fastest guy on the field coming in at a 79 speed grade. Despite that, he's been an extremely productive DSFL player picking off at least 3 passes every year he's been down there, including 4 this season and last season. His natural position is cornerback, but I could see him possibly playing as a strong safety or being a rangy linebacker with Tucker or Lee swapping out to safety. Most realistically Miles is an "if push comes to shove" type player where we'll probably only retain his services if we don't fill all our holes via the draft and free agency.
Omar Wrong & Mark David
Defensive line is a place we'll need at least one player with Dental Dam's upcoming retirement. Mark David is currently on the roster so he doesn't exactly fill that role, but he's also set to become an unrestricted free agent. Now we definitely want him back as he's been a big stout body in the middle of our line, forcing most running backs to have to choose the outside if they want to find a running lane. One option that we have to fill either David's roll if he does choose to leave or fill Dam's role as a big body defensive end is Omar Wrong. Wrong isn't the strongest guy, but he moves that big body way better than you'd ever think he'd be capable of. Due to the strength issue I think he'd be better suited to play on the outside, although that does create a bit of an issue trying to set an edge, I think his potential pass rushing abilities could be utilized well.
Offensive Line
We're pretty fluid on how the offensive line will look, we may drop back to the setup we had going when Noble won those 4 games, but a lot of that will be determined by the draft and free agency. I will say 100% we won't be having the same setup we had this season, at least not the same builds since those were 100% geared towards the run game so it will most likely shift somewhat to more balanced builds. Again this will be heavily determined by the results of the draft and free agency as the cash available to dish out to those hogs could shift a great deal.
Conclusion
After taking a bit of a deeper dive into our team I think things actually look a lot better than some people make it out to be. Sure currently behind tank commander Noble things look bleak and gloomy and like a never ending burning pile of rubble with only remnants of what used to be, however, I'm actually quite optimistic for what the future has in store for us. One area we definitely need to address through free agency and the draft is the defensive side of the ball, which will take some time, and while that's being built up I think we have the start to a great offense with a ton of pieces that could help create something really fun to watch.
