Leaf, why are you doing this again? You literally made the first one hours ago!
Shut your dang mouth critics, I'm back, and this is LEAFTALK.
My first guest today is @nunccoepi co-gm of the current ultimus champions, Baltimore Hawks
.
I'm going to talk to him about building an ultimus-juggernaut team.
My first question is, How was this great team assembled? Was it through draft picks or a trade, or both?
"1. I would say that the great team had some remnants of old hawks greatness, but was established through two phases: major changes prior to S14 which included bringing in iseedoug and I as GMs as well as signing YoungTB and Sapp as great FA finds. Those successes can be attributed to iamslm22 and Unicorn in the previous regime. So in that sense iseedoug and I inherited a great team. But we also brought on phase two which was a huge trade which took place in S14 that I think really put us over the top. We ended up essentially gutting Colorado and took a bunch of one year rentals but really the major take always there were PDXBaller and Viggo Squanch. Of course we ended up giving up some draft capital, but I think we ended up alright thanks to a super deep draft in S15."
My second question is, As a gm, what was the hardest decision to make as a gm building this great team?
"2. I can't speak as well to game strategy as that's iseedoug's thing. But I think the hardest thing had to have been the risk of pulling off that trade last season, especially after seeing it not end in an Ultimus. That was super disappointing because iseedoug and I have said that our goal was to bring a threepeat to Baltimore like we did in Tijuana. But in the end I think the risk definitely paid off. "
My third question is, How do you feel about the team next season? Do you feel like that you have a good chance to repeat as champs despite having a rookie qb?
"3. I feel great about the team next season. No one really knows 100% what these teams will look like after expansion takes place, but being one of the deepest teams in NSFL history I think we will have a chance to walk away in a better position than almost any other team. The fact that we are coming off of an Ultimus certainly helps as well. And yeah, I'm not worried about Raven at QB next season. He's had plenty of time and experience now. He's definitely ready. He has been practically salivating seeing what Gambino was able to accomplish these last two seasons, and I'm sure it wasn't easy seeing what Cooter was able to do this season as well as a rookie. So, yeah, no worries there."
Thanks for your time, Nunc, it was a pleasure having you on this talk show.
My second and last guest is a young prospect who's going to appear in the upcoming prospect bowl game, and yes, the 87-yard touchdown occurred there. Please welcome Ashley Owens!
First question, Reflecting back on your college days, what was your best moment? Was there something that you regretted doing?
"1. My best moment definitely came in my junior year - most recent - against our rival, Minnesota. We had 2nd and goal from the 5, down 29-24. With three seconds left on the clock, we had one play to get it into the end zone. The playcall was pretty standard slants from the shotgun, with me blocking, but our quarterback audibled at the line to have me run a wheel route out of the backfield; he told me if his first read was covered the ball would be headed to me. Ball was snapped and, sure enough, our WR1 was covered and it came to me. I did a quick little juke to avoid a cornerback right after catching the ball, and then with 0 seconds left on the clock, I fought through a linebacker who’d been on man coverage to just barely reach the ball to the goal line, for the touchdown and the win!
What I regret most is my falling out with the runningback coach. That man has helped my game so much, not to mention just helped me acclimate to college. If you read my wiki article you can learn the nature of my early departure from the Wisconsin Badgers (I’ve declared for the draft after my junior year instead of senior), and I’ve got some choice words for the head coach that aren’t appropriate outside of a private conversation between him and myself. But the runningback coach is a great man, and I wish I’d expressed my appreciation to him more before leaving practice facilities for what I presume will be quite a while."
Second question, There’s a lot of young talent in the prospect bowl, but if their were a legend that you were to replicate the career of, who would it be?
"2. Well, I’ve gotta say either Darren Smallwood or Eric Kennedy. Though I hope to have a longer career than the latter, they were both great examples of a runningback at peak dual threat performance. They dominated the field both on the ground and receiving. That’s the kind of player I hope to be - one that forces the defense’s attention by making it happen in every offensive aspect of the game. All that said, I don’t plan to be “the new Darren Smallwood” or anything like that. I aim to be the first Ashley Owens."
Thanks for your time, it was a pleasure having you on here Owens!
BONUS STUFF
I guess i'll tell you about the origin of the beloved DSFL-legal drink, Leaf-Cola! Back in Portland, it was 2024, back on the Leaf family farm, a 17 year old Leaf decided to mix Gatorade with Coke Zero Sugar, and with a hint of paprika and maple leafs, "Leaf's Secret Stuff" was born, and has been made in cherry and vanilla and coffee versions ever since.
Looks like we're out of time folks, The Expansion GM interviews are coming next week!
