Only moments after San Jose SaberCats quarterback Ethan Hunt fronted the media to announce he would not be staying on with the team, a statement was released from the team's front office.
In the wake of today's shocking news, the GM team of the San Jose SaberCats would like to take this moment to address what has happened. First of all, this is not a shock for us -- only days ago, Ethan Hunt (@daBenchwarmer) met with the GM team at our head office and advised that he did not wish to play for the organisation anymore. Obviously we were disappointed to hear this, having parted with a valuable and much-loved member of our team and key piece of our defense, Bert Metas (@Bertiswho), in order to acquire Hunt.
Hunt requested that he be left unprotected in anticipation of the upcoming expansion draft, where new teams the Las Vegas Legion and Philadelphia Liberty will be granted the opportunity to acquire 4 unprotected players from each existing team. The GM team in San Jose appreciate Hunt's advance notice, and can understand his desire to have a fresh start with a new team in their inaugural season. However, we also wish to make a point that we are not a halfway house for troubled players, nor a stepping stone to 'bigger and better things'.
Prior to the upcoming expansion draft, Ethan Hunt will be protected and remain a member of the San Jose SaberCats. After the season has concluded, when the trade window reopens during the offseason, Hunt will be available to be traded to a suitable team for a suitable price. We believe he has the tools to succeed and lead a franchise to the Ultimus; however, he will not be given freely.
The SaberCats have an elite core of dedicated and passionate players who are eager to succeed. We also wish to see them, and the team, succeed, and feel that Hunt's move is extremely detrimental to this goal. As such, we will not exacerbate the damage by allowing a key team member to leave without recuperating some of the cost involved in the initial trade to acquire him. As the leaders of this team, we are taking a stand in defense of the players that comprise it and who have given countless hours in the pursuit of its glory. You will be rewarded for your pride, commitment, and dedication.
We appreciate that there will be many questions regarding this ongoing saga. However, we request that you respect our wishes to be given time to consult with our loyal team members and prepare for the upcoming offseason, so that we can challenge for the Ultimus in S2. Please direct any questions or comments to Ethan Hunt (@daBenchwarmer), who will be happy to field them.
Kind regards,
Ben Longshaw
