If a Game Happens but Nobody is Around to Watch it, Does it Really Make a Sound?
Being held in the shadow of the biggest game of the season, many fans were not aware that last night The Mongoose and Sun Tropics squared off in the championship game for the S2 Prospects Series. After four games the series was tied 2-2 heading into the championship with tons of drama built up from some really close games between these two teams. The few diehard fans and draftnicks that decided to tune in were treated into a real slobberknocker of a match. It was clear that many of the players still have a lot of adjustments to make as they enter the league and are facing a completely new challenge. There were more drops than a Skrillex concert, more turnovers than your local bakery and more too many men on the field penalties than the club on a weeknight, but it was still football at its heart. The game started off slowly, with the only scoring by the Sun Tropics coming in the form of 4 field goals by kicker Jack Vanderjagt. Early in the second quarter, the Mongoose was able to score twice within a minute by following up a Darlane Farlane TD with a safety, but were down by 3 headed into the fourth quarter. QB Shawn Brady rallied the troops in the fourth quarter, passing a pair of touchdowns to John Baker and Jordan Smith to put the Mongoose up by two scores with very little time left in the game. The Sun Tropics were given plenty of chances to make a comeback but drives stalled due poor execution and coaching blunders, such as punting on a fourth and short situation in decent field position. The Sun Tropics were finally able to pull within 3 with only 11 seconds left in the game thanks to a powerful run by Kyle Cobb. However they failed to recover the onside kick that followed and the Mongoose were able to run out the rest of the clock and secure a victory and the Ultimus Jr trophy.
The game MVP was Mongoose QB Shawn Brady who lit up the Sun Tropics defense, throwing for 218 yards and 3 touchdowns, each to a different receiver. His draft stock was definitely boosted by this clutch performance in a big spot. Although the QB market is quite saturated in the league at the moment, the two expansion teams will certainly be looking for a franchise QB to build around and Brady may be just the guy to do it. He showed some strong poise and leadership in this game. Another player of note was Darlane Farlane of the Mongoose who had 64 yards rushing and averaged an impressive 4.6 YPC on the ground to go along with 4 receptions and a receiving touchdown. The Sun Tropics kicking specialists Jack Vanderjagt and Christiano Ronaldo also had impressive games. The benefit of having strong special teams can never be overstated, so these two may find themselves in a good situation come draft day as well.
With the draft only a week away now and a bit of a football hangover coming before the start of S2, do yourself a favor to go back and watch the games from this series. These players have worked hard to make it to the league and they played their hearts out in these games, some that even went to overtime, in the midst of preparing to be drafted. Sure it may not be great football, but it’s still the game we love. And who knows, one of these players may be coming to the franchise nearest you in the near future.
