(S29) PT 1 - Training Camp

Andy Fantuz did not know what to expect as he went to his first training camp in his Football career and his first in the DSFL after he was drafted by the Kansas City Coyotes. One of the first things that Fantuz noticed when he first attended the training camp was the number of Coyotes and ISFL legends such as Ennis, Brackenridge, and Banks, that were attending the camp to help out the new players. While its not a surprise, all of the different position groups were spread out and working on their own drills which gave Fantuz a chance to learn some skills and techniques from the star wr of the Coyotes that is Abed. Quarterback Gimmy Jaroppolo was also able to provide some tips and advice for what a player such as Fantuz can do on the offensive side of the football field that includes more than just catching the football. While Fantuz feels that he was snubbed in the DSFL draft, this only fueled the fire inside of him to truly excel within training camp to set the foundational stones for the rest of the seasons and to develop the work ethic that it takes to excel within such a tight and competitive league. Lastly, training camp can weed out some of the truly great players and those that fall behind in their careers as they can't keep up.

I think at this point in my ISFL career, I'm no longer a newbie, but not quite a veteran just yet. Therefore, training camp for me was just like any old day of game prep. A new season of course brings with it jitters and excitement, but there is a comfortable familiarity to it all that puts me at ease. For the rookies, however, that excitement is palpable. You can almost cut it with a knife and serve it right back to them. Savior Hawkins and Bradley Welch come to mind in particular. These two, already developing great comradery throughout training camp are two to keep an eye on. They match up against one another every day in practice, and as the bible says, iron sharpens iron. Expect these two to be young standouts for the Royals.

Regarding secret plays, the Royals offense has been pretty vanilla. It's just a part of the team's culture to be traditional. That being said, there is one play - or rather player - you should keep an eye out for. Will "Brick Wall" Smyth has been seen fielding punt and kick returns. The big guy hasn't slimmed down at all, but at times seems to be one of the quickest guys on the team. Everyone loves watching a big man run with the football, and his teammates are no expection.

"Blue Crush," the record-setting, Ultimus-winning Sarasota Defensive Squad, suffered a lot of player turnover this offseason. In particular, they lost their two veteran Linebackers: (1) Haha Mango-Panda who retired to probably go live his best life on a beach sipping mai tai's somewhere even beachier than Sarasota and (2) Derred DeVille who entered free agency and decided it was time to return a bit closer to home, taking a new contract with the Berlin Fire Salamanders. So most of the offseason, Ernest Lover, who had only started playing Linebacker for the most recent season, was preparing to have to step up his game and leadership role on the squad. And there was a big question mark around who would be playing alongside him.

But the Sarasota coaching staff decided to get creative and hold an all-team tryout for Linebacker (and Safety). For two intensive days, they drilled every player on the roster in defensive formations and play calls, then spent the next three out on the practice field rotating players (with the exception of the precious franchise quarterback) in and out of defensive positions. Ernest had a blast playing opposite so many of his teammates. The offensive players on a whole struggled, especially James Angler who kept his eyes so focused on his mark that he kept running into the other defenders. The exception was wide receiver Michael Witheblock. Once he got a bit of coaching on proper tackling technique, Witheblock straight-up balled at Linebacker. His veteran knowledge of routes helped him stick to his man in coverage. His knowledge of offensive playbooks helped him quickly read plays and make decisions on when to blitz (and he went hard), when to shore up the defensive line, or when to drop back in support. 

Going into the offseason, Ernest never expected to be playing opposite Witheblock at Linebacker this season. But, crazier things have happened!

After a close lose in the Ultimus training camp for Austin was and interesting one for sure. As always we headed to do our spring training on the banks of Buchanan Lake in the warm Texas sunshine. Normally there is always someone who turns up late, or is in some sort of contract holdout and doesn’t show up till midway through the week however after we came so close to winning it all last season not a single person was late. It was a quiet training camp as well with everyone focused on the drills and the work out, each player determined to make it the one last step next season and to take the whole thing. Things did brighten up at least while intensity is good we also needed to blow of steam and so the coaching staff thought the best way to do this was with an offense verses defence paint ball match, it quickly became carnage with it going down to the wires as onl 2 from each side were left, Jackie and Jim on the offense and Annie and Tomage on the defence. Unfortunately for the defence Jim and Jackie’s unnatural speed was to much and they destroyed the 2 defenders from a high perch in a tree, still have no idea how they go up there though.

The offseason has ended and my offseason training program out in Maui with @Ace has finally come to an end. It was nice to catch up with him again after spending so much time on the Royals together. Running through drills with my mentor and someone I looked up to was a driving factor to getting better, and CJ knows that I need to be pushed to be the best that I can be. I showed up bright and early at 5 AM on the first day of training camp, the first one there. In my eyes, that means everyone else on the team was late, but especially our K/P Matthew McDairmid. In fact, as I am writing this post, McDarmid still has not shown up for anything yet. No film, no meals, no workouts, no drills. We’re beginning to put together a search party as no one has heard a word from our beloved kicker. Moving past that, this training camp really set the tone in San Jose, this is going to be one hell of a defense. Hard hitting, ball to the nose, hawking in the air. Don’t be surprised if this ends up being one of the better all around units at the end of the season.

Training camp is always an exciting time, particularly in the DSFL. With much fewer returning members to teams than in the ISFL, and often more new additions, it’s always interesting to see how the team is shaping up. It’s also interesting to see who gets along with whom. Sheriff Woody is generally a pretty friendly guy and likes to try to get along with as many people as possible. Everyone from this season’s draft class in Tijuana seems to take a similar stance since there hasn’t been any butting of heads that you can usually expect in a brand new training camp. Of course, there are some of the classic pranks that go on between the returning players and the new rookies. Everyone knows the classic prank about putting itching powder in the new guys’ shoes and clothes. Although, in Tijuana they used a different kind of powder in our clothes. Man was that a wild practice. You have never seen a group of rookies run so hard and so fast in your life. Shamefully, I will have to admit that Sheriff Woody was late for one practice. After an incident involving a window at the training facilities and a pizza delivery car, it was quite the journey to get back to the training camp in time for practice. Ended up falling in about 10 minutes after the first whistle blew.
