To preface this article, please do not be offended by this. Obviously being a GM in this league is difficult and I do not wish to offend anyone. This article will be touching one GM specifically and a few fixes to prevent further issues. The Legion are obviously in dire straights. They went "all in" for a win now approach and wound up being the worst team in the league. They have an absurdly over paid Quarter Back who they cannot move, and they have no first round pick in the next draft. In a league of of thirty two teams it is OK to have a franchise be incompetently run, but to have a disaster team in an eight team league is awful. There two fixes I suggest to potentially stop another disaster from happening.
The Stepien Rule
I think we should institute the Stepien Rule in the league, with a few alterations. For those who are unfamiliar with the Stepien Rule, its a rule in the NBA named after former Cleveland Cavaliers owner Ted Stepien. Stepien traded away a ton of first round picks and made his team almost un-sellable. The NBA stepped in by giving the Cavaliers back draft picks for a new owner and made a rule that teams CANNOT trade their first round pick two years in a row. Not there are a couple caveats to this. Teams can lower themselves in the first round, and teams can trade the player after they have made their first round pick, but the Legion would not have been able to do what they did.
I think this would be a great addition to our league. It is clear that the Legion are screwed in the future, and especially in a season three draft that seems shallow, it is awful that they don't have a first round pick.
My suggestion: Teams cannot trade first round picks in back to back years is the general rule. There is one big exception though. A "trade down" does not count as to this rule. So if a team trades their first round pick for multiple draft picks that is fine, and they would be allowed to trade their next year's first round pick.
General Managers should be able to get fired
Now I expect this is going to be controversial. General Managers are obviously volunteering their time, and are trying to improve the league by being in charge of the teams. I AM NOT suggesting any General Manager is ready to be fired right now. But in the NSFL we have no owners and they have no chance to get fired right now. But we are trying to make our league as realistically as possible. And if a General Manager brings a team to three consecutive last place finishes then the team would fire that General Manager. Obviously it would be tough to find a replacement, and again I am not saying that anyone should be fired right now, all I'm saying is that there needs to be a discussion and a rule needs to be in place. EVEN if there is a rule that says General Managers cannot be fired, that's fine. But we need codified rules on this.
Now I know these two suggestions might be controversial, especially the firing one. If it's not going to be implemented I am OK with it, but the draft pick one I see almost no down side. We shouldn't let one team ruin the competitive dynamics of the league by trading away three or four first round picks in a row. Everyone please let me know what you think.
607 - Ready for grading.
