I think one of the less spoken of, and yet most intriguing, theories out there is that Abraham Lincoln's killer, John Wilkes Booth, was never apprehended by authorities. As I am sure that you are all very well aware, John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln by coming in to the theater, putting a gun to the back of the president's head, and blowing his brains out.
The ensuing chase soon took the national stage as Booth fled south, hoping to find those that would support and hide him after his murdering of one of America's greatest presidents. But, despite Booth being killed when a barn burned down upon him, it is whispered that he did, in fact, manage to escape.
Preposterous, right? Well, if you look into it, it could make more sense than it appears to on the surface. For one, the body that was assumed to be Booth's was burned alive, and hardly recognizable. DNA evidence was not available back then, so they simply assumed they had brought down this heinous criminal.
In hindsight, now that we do have that DNA testing available, it has come to the surface that the spinal records of the man killed in that barn do not match those of Booth. So, did he, in fact, manage to escape? The world may never know.
