No matter how good of a receiver you are, if you’re constantly getting blanketed by coverage or the quarterback has basically no time to throw, it’s going to be tough to put up good numbers. One of the best ways to avoid both of those situations is to have a solid running game, which, of course, requires a solid running back.
When I arrived in Colorado at the start of this season after being drafted first overall by the Yeti, Boss Tweed, their long-time running back and a true workhorse out of the backfield, was beginning his next chapter with the Yellowknife Wraiths. In the offseason, the spooky boys acquired Tweed while the Yeti got Knuck in return. Knuck is inferior to Tweed in almost every way, which meant that from day 1 of this season, opposition teams knew all they needed to do to shut down our offense is rush the QB and cover the receivers, which they’ve done.
Now, it did lead to Crush having his first real breakout season with the Yeti, as Applehort’s passes tended to find him most often on those rare occasions when the pressure did overwhelm our young quarterback, but myself and Dwayne Aaron have had a fairly quiet season by our own standards.
For that reason, if I could will it and it would be so, I would love to bring Tweed back to Colorado, get him back on the proper side of the ball, and have him take some defensive pressure off of the receiving team so that we can put up big numbers.
