Nate Swift’s first season and a half has been an interesting experience. He has improved as a player greatly, bonded with teammates, and become a better person along the way. The most growth has occurred on the many road trips the Luchadores have taken during the DSFL season. Growing up in Nebraska, Swift never traveled outside the state borders. The only plane he ever saw was in the blockbuster movie, “Air Force One” which he saw when he spent the night at a friend’s house in junior high. It was a life altering experience. Ever since, I’ve been terrified of air travel. Luckily, in the DSFL, we can’t afford planes to take us to games. Instead we form a caravan of 8 separate Honda Fits! Lucky me! Ours are painted red and green in honor of the Luchadores. Unfortunately, during Christmas time we tend to get stuck in traffic jams due to the congregation of onlookers who think we are filming one of those holiday car commercials in which Santa’s reindeer are actually cars. Silly people, everyone knows Santa drives a Buick.
Anyway, the first road trip of my career we travelled from Tijuana, Mexico to Palm Beach, Florida. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my passport. My teammates’ quick thinking saved the day when they shoved me inside a towel bag and stuffed me in the rather roomy truck. For some reason they kept me in there the entire trip. We arrived in Palm Beach and secured my first ever Sim League victory. My teammates were so happy they created a tradition in which every road trip I get stuffed in the laundry bag. What friends! It is so fun doing those cross-country drives. They even give me a flashlight and our playbook to study so I don’t get bored! The constant studying is starting to help a lot, as I am using it to learn Spanish! Here’s to another fun filled season, hombres! #LUCHA!
