Playoff Reviews:
The season has come to an end and the recent expansion team Austin Copperheads are Ultimus champions. While the road through the playoffs wasn’t wasn’t exceptionally difficult, you can never be too confident with this sim.
First up, they hosted the Arizona Outlaws. Austin started off behind in this game and it took them almost the entire first half to claim the lead. Heading into halftime with a 4-point lead was a good sign. They came out after the break, scored quickly, and the game wasn’t close again.
Next, the Copperheads hosted the Second Line. Austin scored early off of a rare safety. Once again they fell behind but reclaimed the lead heading into halftime. While the game was close throughout the 2nd half, Austin never gave up the lead again and solidified their spot in the Ultimus game.
The Ultimus game had Austin headed up to Canada to face off against the Wraiths. Austin came out early scoring 14 unanswered points in the first quarter alone. They scored again in the 2nd quarter to take a 21-3 lead into halftime. From that point on, it was just bleeding the clock and game management as Yellowknife was never able to make this a close game. Austin wins easily 37-20.
Armchair GM
When looking at the season the Portland Pythons just endured, it is easy to say their season was a train wreck. If I didn’t need 200 words, the quick answer would be to just do the opposite of what you did this past season. From the beginning, this team was doomed. They didn’t have any respectable offensive line. It took several in game weeks for this to be remedied. While I think they put moderate effort into their draft approach and execution, there was no testing to determine the how well this team played together. There was a divide in the locker room that caused players to request trades. The team also had to endure 3 different GMs stepping down during the season. There is nowhere to go but up from here. Being a DSFL team, they get to hit the reset button each season which has its benefits. With a little preparation, they should be able to rebuild this coming draft and get back to the competitive team this franchise and its fan base expects. The recipe for success is to fill the co-gm spot with someone great, draft with the team needs in mind, then finally test some strats and win more than a couple games.
Reform
If I was in charge, I would make changes to the salary structure within the league. The current contract rules in the league are nonsense and easily and often exploited. Making a team play its players what they are worth based on TPE seems logical but is rarely the case. As far as effort to maintain this additional step, I don’t think there would be much time involved from a head office perspective. It would be easier to manage than regression.
I would also get rid of all tampering rules. Everyone knows that tampering occurs but its only every brought up when a player is contacted by a team they don’t want to join. The current tampering rules only affect bad teams because nobody is going to report being tampered by a good team. In general, tampering is impossible to police and shouldn’t be in the rule book.
Last, I would add something along the lines of compensatory picks for teams that lose top draft picks to IA or free agency. The worst part about being a GM is having to manage this Player first mentality. This stuff never happens IRL so giving teams a lifeline when they lose participation from top picks would be nice.
Expansion
If I oversaw the birth a new expansion team, the league would be facing dire times. Putting me in charge of a franchise means the league is on the brink of folding. I would give my usual 60 percent with is honestly better than some other franchises have. Obviously location is important. Just ask anyone in real estate. That’s why I’m building my team in the heart of the Midwest. That’s right, the NSFL is head to Lincoln Nebraska. Next, we need a team name. Something aggressive that lets people know we are for real. A name like the Assassins lets people know what were about. I’m thinking the mascot can just be some guy dressed nice carrying around a sniper rifle case. Any kind of rifleman would work I suppose. I don’t want any of the cloaks from those games the kids play. As for the logo, I’m thinking I silhouette of the state of Nebraska with a crosshair reticle scoped in on where Lincoln is located on the map. It could maybe have a bullet ripping through the state to give it a little more excitement. I don’t have a slogan picked out yet but it would be something menacing for sure.
