When I was a GM, I proposed a FA rule that for whatever reason didn't even make it to vote. It would all teams to contact upcoming FAs after the week 10 trade deadline. This still gives the players current team until week 10 to extend the player but if an agreement wasn't reached would give other teams ~2 IRL weeks for conversations before free agency signings would occur.
A more radical timeline would be to allow teams to contact players in the last year of their contract starting Day 1 of the season. The team the owns the rights could still sign and extend the player during the season but it would give the player the ability to explore their actual market value before signing an extension.
