The moment the door creaks open, the first thing that would catch one’s eye is a gray t-shirt with the “Failadelphia” logo gifted to Cushing by the man who uses the locker next to him, Matt James. On the inside of the locker, behind his hanging jersey, a list is taped to the back wall. On that list, twelve names are written. They aren’t the twelve people drafted before him in the Season Two draft, though that is an interesting coincidence. Instead, they are the twelve linebackers graded above him at beginning of season evaluations.
At the top of the list sit two unlikely candidates: Lindarius Shelton and Reginald Hampshireton. Both performed very capably last season, but Cushing has made it clear he expects to be seen as the top linebacker on the team.
After that duo sit five very obvious candidates: Jonathan Saint, Wyatt Fulton, Jaylon Lee, Ian Bavitz and Stephen Harrison. Any one of the five would be an ideal middle linebacker on any team, all but impossible to escape from when they come after for a tackle, and all set on getting behind the line of scrimmage and stopping that run, or simply destroying the quarterback if he was foolish enough to hang on to the ball.
After them is Luke Tiernan, the former running back who decided to use his speed and strength to instead go after every other runner. Along with Saint and Fulton, he rounds out the most efficient run-stopping defense in the league.
Next is Tyler Varga, a former defensive end who converted to linebacker, now one of the most feared rushers in the league. His mechanics still need work, but with his ability to bring down blockers, nothing will get in his way.
Franklin Harris, easily the fastest in the league at the position, looking to improve on the 12 sacks he had in Season One.
At the bottom of the list, after a small space, are two more names, Harrif Ernston and A.C. Hackett. The two linebackers were, according to Cushing, a source of inspiration for the then U of H sophomore when he was converting to linebacker, with Ernston being closer to a traditional linebacker and Hackett more like a safety. Their names being at the bottom and the space between those two and the rest of the list show they are the last ones he will try to outperform, but to be the best, you have to beat EVERYONE.
