I wanted to take some time on this one. I think the salary cap is what makes football my favorite sport, so naturally I want to see that same importance in NSFL.
Pros of jumping the salary cap:
- More of a pay gap between the league's best/most positionally scarce players and the worst/most common.
- Allows GMs to focus more on managing their teams/players without letting their own player slide in value.
- Allows more flexibility in team-building and exciting free agencies
Cons:
- Makes players on minimum salaries a potentially unbalancing factor.
- Screws over players who just signed long term deals.
- Screws over teams like the Legion, whose cap space is currently the only advantage they have to look forward to, as this extra money guarantees that no upper tier team has to let a player go for cap space for at least 4 more seasons.
Assessment:
The idea clearly has merit, but almost tripling the cap in two years time is a reckless idea. Maybe if the increase were smaller, and continued over a longer stretch of time it would work. Additionally, the minimum deals of higher tier players would need to be increased aggressively, perhaps doubling the increase for each tier. We can't have rookies making more than T3 players (which will be happening in S3 at the moment). We have to consider what kind of impact this would have on league jobs, as doing them would no longer be necessary for financial gain. Would we still have the same level of support?
I don't want to say yea or neigh to this, just wanted to make sure certain things were taken into consideration.
