Option 2:
Redbeard McFredbeard absolutley loves birthday parties. They were his favorite thing growing up and he looked forward to them every year. You know those kids who when asked how old they are will tell you they're something like 8 years and 212 days old? That was Redbeard. He always knew how long it was until the next birthday party. Upon learning of this love of celebrating birthdays, the team and his agent discussed how this could be used to create some young lifelong fans, ensuring ticket revenue and merch sales would remain strong well into the future, as they assume that children who get some face-to-face time with their idols will be more likely to buy gear in the future. The problem is that Redbeard’s beard scares children. Football players are usually pretty big guys, and children are often scared of strange adults. So Redbeard is already at a disadvantage, but the kids usually freak out when they see that massive, scraggly beard. It’s not so much that Redbeard himself is scary, it’s literally just the beard. The kids absolutely cannot stand it, even when Redbeard does something cool with it like styling it in the shape of a cake with candles. There’s just no winning, so now he celebrates birthday parties only with other adults and the whole marketing campaign was abandoned. He hopes, though, that there may be a series of television commercials related to birthdays featuring Redbeard sometime in the not-too-distant-future.
