Well we're now a third of the way through the season instead of a quarter, but theres still some overachieving and underachieving talking points.
Overachieving at the moment are the San Jose Saber Cats. Currently they are 4-2, and were lightly regarded going into the season as a result of losses of top talent like Ty Hood and a notoriously shaky Offensive Line protecting a mediocre QB in Monterey Jack. Instead, Jack has proved to be an effective gunslinger, throwing for over 2000 yards (albeit with a poor TD to INT ratio of 9-8.), and helped lead San Jose to three close, tough wins against Philadelphia, New Orleans, and a big one against New York. The team's point ratio and defense does look lopsided after getting smacked around 45-10 by the Arizona Outlaws, but theres still promise they can eek out a playoff spot if they win 2 out of the next 3 and keep the momentum going.
For underachieving its obviously the Austin Coppherheads. After making it to the Ultimus, one could expect Austin to keep things flowing, with their young QB Jackie Daytona only getting better. Instead, Austin followed up a Week 1 victory over Honolulu with 5 straight losses, all of them fairly close, with their biggest margin of defeat being only an 8 point loss to league-leading Sarasota. Theres hope for Austin if Daytona gets hot on the back half of the season, if they can get a win over San Jose, but they're the clear underachievers right now.
