14. Describe your player and/or team’s journey through this latest season. What were the highlights? What were the lower points? What might you have done differently? What are your expectations for next season?
Bender came into this season with high expectations. After a solid rookie year, he looked to greatly improve his statistical output. He was called up to the big leagues immediately after being drafted last season, so I was well aware that achieving the Defensive Rookie of the Year award was pretty much not an option. My goal for him became to win the Breakout player of the year award. I figured that if he could get 11 sacks, more than double his rookie season, it would be possible. Throw in some forced fumbles and interceptions and it would be a lock. Bender started off the season on track to meet this goal. He had a sack in each of the first four games and was the Otter's leading tackler through the first half of the season. I understood that getting sacks at this rate was unsustainable, so I was really hoping for at least one, maybe two, multi sack games. Unfortunately that did not occur. Bender's hot start to the season eventually returned to his normal production. Though it was an improvement from his rookie campaign, I would have like to see him become more of a playmaker. I think my favorite Bender highlight was in week 13 against SJS. The Sabercats were driving in OCO territory looking to score when Bender strip sacked the QB and recovered the fumble. The Otter's offense went on to score that next drive and we eventually won the game by one score. It's always nice to see your player having an impact like that. I hope to see it more often next season.
As a team, the Otters had a similarly hot start to the season but were unable to maintain the momentum until the end. We started off with the best performing defense in the league (maybe partly due to Bender's sim luck at the time??). We were in third place most of the season, primed for a playoff birth. Unfortunately we could not overcome our kryptonite, the Second Line, and lost to them twice this season, putting them ahead of us in the standings. We even tried a straight running game plan against their terrible run defense. But, alas, the sim gods denied us by limiting us to 7 rushes. We had something like over 20 yards per carry that game. But noooo the sim decided to pass 50 times instead. Yes, I am a bit salty about that one. Man I hate losing to NOLA. Anyways, on a positive note, we did improve our record from the past season. With our team steadily improving in TPE and Blas's genius running the team, the league better be on the lookout for the #OtterSlaughter next season.
