12. The Berlin Fire Salamanders were the favorites to walk away with the Ultimus in season 29, and for a good reason too. The recent expansion team had done a fantastic job of building up a team from the group up, and topped it all off in the offseason with some smart acquisitions to really push them over the top. On the offensive side of things, they had one of the most lethal passing attacks in the league. Headlined by star quarterback Nick Kaepercolin, the passing attack of the Berlin Fire Salamanders put up a staggering 4764 yards, spread out between three very talented receivers in Achtfunf, Hood, and Skiuuup, along with the ever reliable tight end Clark Boyd. Running back Danny King Jr. led the Fire Salamanders out of the backfield, putting up 1200 yards of rushing and thirteen touchdowns for an impressive campaign. The defense, while lacking a true superstar in my opinion, was a very well rounded unit with no real weaknesses to speak of. The talented secondary is the strong suit of this squad, led by talented corner Jeeeeroy Lenkins, and bolstered in the offseason by the acquisition of former Butcher Tyron Shields, the Fire Salamanders secondary could be described as a no fly zone, forcing opposing passing attacks to try and find their gains on short passes while taking away the deep ball. The front seven were a force to be reckoned with, that group was led by veteran linebacker Derred de Ville, who terrorived opposing backfields with 19 sacks. The Berlin Fire Salamanders pick up their signature win of the season in week seven at home versus the Arizona Outlaws. They were 4-2 coming into that game, and were up against one of the top teams in the league, and the Berlin Fire Salamanders were looking to make a statement. Things started off very well for the Berlin Fire Salamanders, who got two touchdowns in the air midway through the first half, and added a field goal late, but gave up a touchdown on the ground. They still walked into halftime with a solid 17-7 lead, but they had a long second half ahead of them. Another field goal gave them a 13 point lead, but the Outlaws would strike twice in the coming minutes to take a 21-20 lead. Kicker Danny King came in clutch with a 51 yard bomb to put the Fire Salamanders back in front, and the defense would hold strong for the last eight minutes to preserve the win. It was that week that everyone around the league learned that the Fire Salamanders were for real.
27. There are a few brandings in the league that I am a big fan of. The Sarasota Sailfish is a favorite of mine, I just love the big fish logo. Something about it is just really funny to me and I laugh a bit every time I see that big fish with its mouth wide open. In addition to that, the colors are great, and the team branding makes a lot of sense given the location of the team, with the Gulf of Mexico that Sarasota sits on being a great place to catch Sailfish. Another favorite of mine is the New York Silverbacks. The Gorilla based team is a nice shout out to the King Kong comics/movies, where the giant gorilla spends a lot of time rampaging around New York City. The logo is very nice and the colors are satisfying, although maybe a bit too close to the real life New York Jets, but it’s not a huge deal in my opinion. Lastly, I need to shout out my DSFL team the Portland Pythons. They recently did a slight overhaul of the team branding, and knocked it out of the park with the updates. The old logo was fine, but this new logo looks incredible.
