Playoff Predictions ----
Competing tonight for the Glacies trophy, or more simply, the championship title of the NSFC are the Yellowknife Wraiths and the Colorado Yeti. Out of all the big games this season, this one may be labeled as the most predictably unpredictable yet. After the Yeti broke their slight losing streak on Wednesday night against the Wraiths, they garnered home field advantage. This may in fact be the boost they need heading into the game that will precede the biggest game of the year, the Ultimus.
I'm going to have to give the edge to the yeti for just that reason. Morale works in subtle ways and if there's any advantage to tip the scale one way or another, that may be all that's needed against such evenly matched teams.
Also playing tonight, but rather, for the Solis trophy, are the Orange County Otters and Arizona Outlaws. Across the street from the NSFC are the ASFC competitors looking to put on a good show. Unfortunately for Otters fans, I don't see that happening. With the Outlaws looking fired up about this game, having beaten the Otters four out of five games this season, it's no wonder why - history is bound to repeat itself. It seems like a sure thing that we'll be seeing the Outlaws in the Ultimus.
Cold as it is in Colorado, count on the Yeti heating up when they take down the Outlaws in an upset come Ultimus day.
Future Talent ----
Who's going first round first pick in the S2 draft? Dermot Lavelle. Who's had a huge impact this first season? Dermot Lavelle? Who's going to have the most significant impact during the playoffs as a rookie? Dermot Lavelle. One last question; who made this choice the easiest decision I've made all day? Dermot Lavelle.
This man is tied for first in passes defensed AND interceptions among cornerbacks. He's a ROOKIE, and an absolute ball hawk. No, wait, he's more than a ball hawk. Think of it like, Dermot is the SaberCats and the ball is an L. TAKE IT. Get out of this man's way.
Now, he's a humble enough guy, you probably won't hear him uptalking himself this drastically, but nonetheless, it's deserved. He's, without a doubt, a future Hall of Famer and I'm very excited to see where his career takes him. I'm sure his ascendance to the top is in no small part due to him learning behind an excellent veteran corner in Dirk Cutter. If Dermot ends up on another team next year, perhaps he can play mentor to a very lucky young defensive back looking to emerge. I can't imagine a better landing spot than the other side of the field from Dermot Lavelle. Regardless of where he ends up though, tonight Logan Noble had better avoid Lavelle island if he's looking to make it to the Ultimus next week!
Bottom Third ----
There are so many things to be said regarding the Baltimore Hawks and the San Jose SaberCats, so many questions to be asked. Where does the road start that leads us to a ten loss season? Perhaps we should evaluate Baltimore's defense. You know how quarterbacks like to toss through the tire swing? Let's compare Baltimore's defense to one of those, but it's a tractor tire and it's hanging from an oak five feet away. They have their fair share of impressive stats like interceptions, but time and time again allow ridiculous amounts of yardage to opposing offenses. Not only that, but it is NOT hard to get into the end zone against these guys. Hey, they might even roll out the red carpet with confetti at the end for you.
What about last night's playoff game? The SaberCats' typically weak offense had an exceptionally easy time simply strolling into the end zone for thirty one points - three of those coming through the air and one from the ground game. Granted, Ethan Hunt has been on fire lately, but the Hawks only managed to highlight their glaring weakness, putting up no resistance. At least one thing's for sure. Heading into the draft, the only choices they'll have to make are between defensive players. Should be quite the long draft board , nevertheless.
Offensive Comparison ----
If I were to ask you to pick a wide receiver, any wide receiver, who might you say? Maybe a good one, like Jeremy Maclin? Maybe a great one, like A.J. Green? What about a mediocre one like A.J. Hawkins? Well, if you selected someone closer to the caliber of A.J. Hawkins and someone else selected, say, Calvin Johnson, you'd have the opposing wide outs featured tonight when the Colorado Yeti take on the Yellowknife Wraiths. Granted, it's never been all about the passing game for the Yeti, they're a well rounded team and they've proven time and time again that they can overcome the odds at certain positional disadvantages, but the conference championship is not when you want to have to overcome a disadvantage like this one. Kendrick Hendrix is solid. He'll occasionally make a big play and he catches most balls you throw his way, but opposite him will be Josh Garden, the Megatron of the NSFL. He's a big guy, a monster even, standing 6'3" defensive backs dread the days they're jumping for balls against this quick tower. He's a play-maker and that's exactly what you want to have when you're making a push for the first ever Ultimus trophy.
Defensive Comparison ----
I'm sure we've all heard at one time or another that defense wins championships. Sorry, but I need to make a clarification; a defense with Jonathan Saint, arguably the league's best linebacker wins championships. Eight tackles and two sacks is enormous. It's the type of play you get out of a championship defensive player, as a matter of fact. That's what Saint brought to the table in the championship game against the Wraiths last night as the Yeti made their Ultimus push. Saint isn't alone, however. You don't have to look far to find another clearly championship caliber linebacker because he was playing for the opposing Wraiths, unfortunately Lindarius Shelton couldn't do enough alone to spur on the win. Still, ten tackles is no small feat. Especially considering the fact that he managed to eclipse the one hundred tackle milestone during his first full year on the field. Shelton is clearly a consistent tackle machine that you can count on game in game out to be a force in the middle of the field. When you've got someone that can scare wide outs into rethinking that slant pattern, you've got someone dangerous. In fact, you might just have a future hall of famer. I know, I know, spoken way too son. But someone's gotta make it, and if I was a betting man, Shelton and Saint would both be prospects.
