The official NCTs were recently announced, and with all the excitement going on, I wanted to take a look at each team and how well they are at each position, and what their strong suits are. Without further ado, here are your NCTs!
The PAC-12 will rely on their defense to win them games. With a monster defensive line that includes Kurt Hendrix, Jayce Tuck, Eli Kamaka, and Joseph Askins, they will be generating lots of pressure on quarterbacks, and this looks like an elite run stuffing unit as well. In the secondary, they are anchored by Dermot Lavelle, the star cornerback. Another facet of the game, but this one on offense, that they excel at will be the passing game. With a cornucopia of wide receivers that includes Shane Weston, Trey Willie, Budda Browning, and Robert Phelps, they'll definitely go with an air-raid strategy, with Mike Bercovici as the QB. Their running game isn't as powerful, but Reg Mackworthy will lead the way, with Leroy Jenkins as a second option.
I'll be frank with you: The ACC is not as strong as any other conference. There, I said it. Their defense was looking strong until it was announced that Notre Dame would play with the Other Conferences, because they aren't associated with any conference in football. Nonetheless, on offense, it will be fun to see what Mike Boss will do. He has his teammate Jordan Yates, who is used more often as a vertical threat, as well as two big passing receivers in Bailey Cook and Dustin Evans. At the tight end position they have Poopyface Tomatonose, the young and up and coming tight end for the NOLA second line, who will be another target for Mike Boss. So expect lots of high scoring games coming from the ACC, since they are heavily offensive.
The Big 10 will definitely be a contender in the tournament. With a scary linebacking core that includes the likes of AC Hackett, his teammate, Jonathon Saint, and finally, big Angus Winchester, it's going to be extremely rough to try to run on this team. Their secondary is a bit of a step down, with Clifford Rove, Gregory Fletcher, Marcus Kane, and Scrub Kyubee patrolling the air. Offensively, they have less problems. With multiple starting NSFL QBs (Avon Blocksdale, Tyler Oles), we can expect a good amount of passing. They have both Mayran Jackson and Alexandre LeClair, as well as Paul DiMirio and Carlito Crush in that unit, and without a leading running back among them, it seems pretty clear what they're going to do when they have the ball. This might differ from some B10 teams, who prefer to pound the ball and play smashmouth football all game long.
The Big 12 is a major underdog. They don't have many players in the NSFL, and many of the players they do were once stars, but have gone inactive, or have retired altogether. Still, this team resembles many of the current Big 12 teams: A shootout offense and a weak defense. Their defense is largely made up of current and former Colorado Yeti, including Alex Hayden, Blaster Blade, and Haruki Ishigawa. They also have Darren Morris at safety, as well as Cordell Joshua playing defensive end. Their offense is much more exciting. King Bronko, the three time* Ultimus champion for the Arizona Outlaws will be taking the snaps, with Boss Tweed next to him in the backfield. They also have Josh Garden and Kendrick Hendrix taking catches, but do not have a single tight end on their roster. They're going to have to play their starters a lot, and are very top heavy.
The last power 5 conference is the SEC. The SEC is going to have to rely on their defense to get stops and put the ball on the ground on the offense. They boast some of the best cornerbacks in the NSFL, including Benson Bayley, Andre Bly Jr., and Antoine Delacour. These three will patrol the skies for the SEC. They also have a decent defensive line, with Ricky Maddox and Fuego Wozy leading the way. The questions will be on the offense, which will need to run the ball efficiently to win. They have mobile quarterback Mat Akselsen, and his teammate, Eric Kennedy, on the ground. Steven O'Sullivan will help block, hailing from Alabama. Maybe the many Wraiths representing the SEC will get their first ring B)
And finally, everyone else. The misfits. Just kidding! Everyone else are forming what looks like (maybe) the team to beat. There are plenty of guys here, which gives a bountiful depth chart that looks like it has no true achilles heel. Their secondary is led by their cornerbacks, which include John Canton, Marc Spector, Kevin Cushing, and Philippe Carter. The front 7 is anchored by the two Sandoval brothers, and the linebacker to watch is Vincent Sharpei. It looks like they'll be running Chris Orosz from Navy at QB, with Darren Smallwood and Ardie Savea sharing touches in the backfield. Bradley Westfield and Charlie Law will be catching the majority of the passes for them.
