Now that the draft is complete, I'm going to review the first 2 rounds of the draft and grade each pick. Seems simple enough. Let's get into it!
1.
- D'Pez Poopsie - RB
One of the worst names in the draft (aside from Dick Cheese) in my personal opinion. But names don't matter. Ability matters. And Poopsie has a heaping diaper full of it. It was a coin flip in my opinion who would be the #1 overall pick between D'Pez and Kazimir. And really with San Jose owning both picks, it didn't truly matter. 1A and 1B honestly.
Grade: A
2.
- Kazimir Oles - WR
Not sure what the relation Kazimir is to Tyler, but if the lineage is solid, this guy will be a star. Oles was a consensus top 3 pick and after taking RB first overall, this duo should be the new face of the Sabercat Franchise for years to come. As I stated before, Oles could have went first overall and nobody would have batted an eyelash.
Grade: A
3.
- Lucari Felix - CB
I did not have Felix with a top 5 grade. But team need presents itself I guess. Maybe they were afraid that San Jose would take him at 4. i don't know, though. By going RB/WR 1-2 they basically dropped the QB choice between Christ and Falconi onto Liberty and they volleyed it right back by taking Felix. I had Hondo and Grithead both above Felix in terms of overall better players. But instead of RB or QB they took CB. At the time I scratched my head, but in the end it worked out beautifully. Thing is, they had no idea it would for sure.
Grade: C
4.
- Joliet L Christ - QB
I was absolutely stunned by this. Unless my scouting senses are way off, Christ was the #2 QB in this draft, and it's not terribly close. Don't get me wrong, I think Christ has a future, and perhaps I'm jaded because the NSFL already had a QB named J. Christ who flamed out quickly, but Falconi's stock, by my count, is higher. But San Jose has nailed this draft so far, and maybe there's a chemistry there that would be missing if they went with Adriana. Or they're sexist.
Grade: B
5.
- Adriana Falconi - QB
How fortuitous that the gamble payed off. They rolled the dice and put the QB decision on San Jose and they still ended up with the better QB. Falconi is a solid player who I think will be a franchise player. She could be up there with Akselsen, Bronko and Blocksdale in terms of greatness. We can look back at this pick in 5 years and see who really got it right.
Grade: A
6.
- Danny Grithead - RB
A lot of question marks here. The Otters drafted a running back last year who will be taking the snaps this coming season, in Ricky Adams. Running Back was not a huge position of need. In addition, they just had a lot of retirements. CB and S are definite positions of need for the Otters and with Westfield retiring and Atwell going to the frozen north, receiver would have been a smart pick. I expected them to go for Troyski, Hobbs or Von Matt here. I don't want to sound like I'm shitting on Grithead. Let me rectify that. Danny Grithead is a sensational player, and can do a lot for a team. But given team need, and the fact this Otter squad is losing so many pieces, a luxury pick like a 2nd RB isn't the best.
Grade: D
7.
- Achilles Hondo - RB
After taking the top CB and the top QB, the 2nd best RB falls to them. In terms of overall talent, my board was Poopsie, Hondo, Grithead. So, the Liberty benefited from the Otters love affair with RBs, and them taking Danny over Achilles. Sources have said that Hondo wanted to land in Philadelphia over Orange County anyhow, and he seemed to have gotten his wish. Philadelphia had to trade up with Arizona to get this pick, but if Hondo lives up to his end of the deal, it'll be more than worth it.
Grade: A
8.
- Lo Rax - DE
Hard to blame them from taking Lo Rax here. Is he the best player available? No, he's not. But seeing as they do not pick again until Round 3, they had to take the guy who they needed most and still presented a fair value. Lo Rax fits that bill. The value isn't so far off, as I have him at a mid 2nd round value. A solid, safe pick.
Grade: B
9.
- Xandra Troyski - CB
I'm not sure if this was a BPA pick, or if they legitimately needed a CB, or potentially both. Either way, this was a great pick. The drop off between top CB Felix and Troyski, isn't that big and they nabbed Troyski in the 2nd versus the 1st round value that Felix got. Solid pickup here by the Sabercats.
Grade: A
10.
- Shannon Hobbs - S
The Outlaws did good here. They made their first pick really count. Hobbs is the best in this class for Safeties, and he can fill in at CB if he is called to. Versatility had Hobbs above Troyski in my book, and even if they wanted the pure CB, the Cats snagged Xandra the pick before. But as I said, I think in terms of pure talent and versatility, Hobbs was the better of the two anyhow. Good choice here.
Grade: A
11.
- Felix Hasslehoff - WR
It's like Philadelphia decided to really show up and nail this draft. The Hoff is, on my board the 3rd best WR available, and so at the time I was a little disturbed this was not Jordan von Matt, but the difference between the two isn't so high that I was floored by the choice. Like Grithead over Hondo in the 1st, Hasslehoff over von Matt makes sense if you have the luxury to make that pick, which given the plethora of picks Philly accrued, they clearly do.
Grade: B
12.
- Jordan von Matt - WR
Any qualms I had with the Hasselhoff pick were instantly dissolved when this pick came off the board. I like this kids attitude and vigor. He's going to make any team he's on shine and speaking candidly, I was REALLY hoping he magically fell to OCO in this round. I knew it was a long shot. But Philadelphia now has 2 young receivers for Falconi to build around. They already drafted a running back with Hondo. Getting a Te in this draft would really round out their all rookie offense.... Oh yeah, they get one in Round 4.
Grade: A
13.
- AJ Robertson - LB
He showed up later in the year, but his stock rose very fast. Had he joined earlier, he'd been a clear 1st round talent. So, for the Liberty to get this guy in the middle of the 2nd is a steal. He's another I was hoping would slide into OCO's pick. I also would say, had Preza not gone inactive, I think this would have been where she was drafted, rounding out Philly's new offense here, instead of way later.
Grade: A
14.
- Seer Zephyrous - RB
Okay. Anybody not in the Otters War Room would be throwing their bowl of chips at the wall here. It's like they have no concept of how to even draft. Hey Sceculadora, this isn't a fantasy draft. Going RB in the first two rounds won't win you championships. What the hell are they thinking? Well, I know what we're thinking and you'll just have to wait and see. But from the outside this has to be a very baffling pick, indeed. But let's talk about Zephyrous himself. A stand up guy, a solid earner and if given the ball, he's a strong player. He can line up at FB and TE, and could really end up being a Erlich Burnsman, but active. But given they have 2 other RBs, what share will he have of the rock?
Grade: D
15.
- Steven Oats - S
I think at this point in the draft is where there a big line in the sand. We go from people we expect to be weekly earners of TPE and updating regularly to the hopefully they update regularly crowd, not including the QBs on the board who remain active. So, the Hawks getting Oats here, who will hopefully be mostly active, is a solid choice. safeties are versatile and Oats is clearly the best of them left.
Grade: B
16.
- Damien Arnold - S
Not sure if I would have doubled down on the safeties here. these are the only 2 picks they have in this draft that really matter, so gotta make them count, right? I would have gone with Chinwemma Yobana-Kanayochukwu at TE or Jake Verden at CB. I feel both of those guys will be more active and not be a doubledown at a position you already spent your other pick on. Who do you think you are, Orange County, scooping up all the safeties?
Grade: C
Here's where I'm stopping the pick by pick analysis. But here's a few solid picks in the later rounds.
18.
- Chinwemma Yobana-Kanayochukwu - TE
This draft was woefully shallow at TE and he's proven to be a quality semi-active guy. For a 3rd round pick, you have to see the value here. Great pick.
30.
- Adam Anderson - K/P
The first and only non-running back pick by the Otters this draft. He's got a small amount of TPE but has been somewhat active as of late, and could turn out to be a huge steal for the Otters if that continues.
27/35.
- Emilia Rudd/Adam Krossman - TE/RB
This husband/wife duo were pretty active for a while and I hope everything is alright with them. Preza was an updater before she went inactive. If these two return, and come back as active as they were before these will be absolute steals and a half.
OVERALL GRADES
- D
Drafted a mediocre RB and a recently retired QB. But mostly this is due to the fact you had no picks really at all. Blah.
- C
You only had 3 picks, but you made the important one count. Hobbs is a great player. But not having 1st rounder is a killer.
- C
Unless Pennington is going somewhere, the Wozy pick is confusing. Verden has potential to be a decent CB, Slick is... um.... Slick. I don't think you nailed the draft at all. But you didn't necessarily flub it either.
- C
You had 2 real picks and you doubled down on safety. I don't know how that'll work out but both the guys you got aren't half bad so, I can't fully condemn the picks.
- C
This would be a D but both the RBs picked were great picks for where they were drafted and the kicker could really become useful. But all in all, the team didn't really address a major need and that sucks.
- B
Lack of picks sucked, but what picks you had, you did well with. Not going BPA, but filling your team with guys you need was solid. I respect that.
- A
What can I say, they did a damn good job. QB, WR and RB all in the 1st round. Solid CB in round 2. Later round picks were okay, given they're all crapshoots.
A+
At the end of the first 2 rounds, the Liberty basically have an entire offense and the start of a solid defense. QB, RB, 2 WR, CB and LB. And all 6 of those players have a B+ or higher ranking on my draft sheet. Fan-fucking-tastic.
I look forward to watching these picks play out and hopefully we can look back at this draft in a few seasons and see just how much talent was packed in here. See if all the wheeling and dealing that Philadelphia and San Jose put into this season's draft works out for them.
