Well folks, we had great weather here at the Rookie Dome in beautiful Flint Michigan, gladly hosting the Pomona Mongoose and Flint Sun Tropics prospect games. Remember, don’t drink the water! With that out of the way, on to the recaps!
Game 1, AKA “Don’t Mess with Ragnar Kronen”
1st Quarter: Flint kicks off – after two uneventful punts, Pomona’s RB Ardie Savea is stripped by Flint safety Roman Thomas and recovered by a Flint bot safety, leading to a Flint Kicker Jack Vanderjagt field goal for the first 3 points of the game. Pomona manages a 1st down before punting and Flint is forced to punt as well in the next drive after Fox North WR and Kyle Cobb RB get a little aggressive and have two penalties in a row, putting Flint out of 1st down range. After a nice pass to Pomona WR Jordan Smith for a 1st down, QB Logan Ryder is brutally sacked by Flint DT Typical Newenglander for an 11 yard loss; so shaken, they end up having to punt again. 2 more uneventful punts and the 1st quarter is over!
2nd Quarter: Flint ends up punting again, and Pomona WR John Baker makes the first long catch of the game with a 29 yard reception; Ryder manages another nice 13 yarder to TE Josepher Kamby for another 1st down immediately afterwards, but two mediocre rushes by Ardie Savea lead to yet another punt. If you haven’t figured it out by now, rookie games see a lot of punts. Several nice passes from Flint QB Josh Bercovici to Kyle Cobb and Flint TE Jesse Sanderson result in yet another 1st down, but three penalties shake things up a bit before a Pomona bot safety knocks the ball from one W. Perry’s hands (I can’t seem to find any record of this mysterious RB; perhaps he was a ghost all along?) before it’s recovered by a different Pomona bot free safety. A nice pass to WR Smith results in a 1st down, but then Pomona TE Paul DiMirio’s nightmare begins. Flint Safety Ragnar Kronen picks him off for the 1st interception of the game! Flint manages a 1st down with quick passes to WR Fox North and versatile RB Kyle Cobb before a penalty on ghost player Perry ends in a punt. Pomona bot LB manages the 2nd sack of the game on Ryder before Pomona punts again. Halftime! 0-3 Flint

3rd Quarter: Fox North on the kick return, 5 yards. Is he all talk? Pomona OL Greg Clegane is called on a tripping penalty, putting Flint dangerously close to their own endzone. Bercovici doesn’t see Pomona DT Bork Bjornsson and is sacked! Safety! What a play for Pomona! Who then squanders their opportunity; 3 punts later, Bercovici manages his best pass of the game for 17 yards to Flint WR Dustin Evans. The mysterious W. Perry manages another catch for a 1st down…Flint on the 26. Cobb rushes for 5 and 3. Bercovici looking to pass…he lets it fly…jump ball between Fox North and Pomona Safety James Lillico…Fox has it but can’t quite get across the pylon, tackled by Lillico at the 1 yard line, 14 yard gain. 1st and goal…Bercovici flips it to Dustin Evans who manages to make the goal line! TOUCHDOWWWWWN Sun Tropics! Jack Vanderjagt extra point good! Finally, we see some real action.
Pomona WR Teez Tobin returns for 7 yards, Pomona 8 yard line. Savea stuffed at the line. Ryder finds Jordan Smith for a 4 yard gain…Savea grabs a 1st down with a 6 yard run. Oooo, that’s gotta hurt! Flint DE Blaster Blade makes a hard hit on Ryder for a huge 10 yard loss on the sack. A long pass by Ryder to Jordan Smith, he bobbles it! Unbelievable! 3rd and 20, still on the Pomona 8 yard line…Ryder rushed in the pocket…he flips it to Paul DiMirio but OHHH KRONEN HAS IT! He picked it right out of Paul’s hands, there’s no one to stop him! 11 yard return, TOUCHDOWWWWWN RAGNAR KRONEN! This rookie is something special folks, he just made that pick six look easy! Vanderjagt kick good! Flint 17, Pomona 2. Not looking good for Pomona with only 2:23 left on the clock in the 3rd.
Nice 12 yard rush for Savea, but yet another punt in Pomona’s future. Is it all over for the Mongoose (Mongeese?) Flint 15, Kyle Cobb rushes for 2, then 7. 3rd and 1, Bercovici goes back, throws a long one to Jesse Sanderson at the 32…IT’S PICKED OFF BY JAMES LILLICO! HE’S AT THE 20…10…NO ONE CAN CATCH HIM, HE MAKES THE ENDZONE! TOUCHDOWN JAMES LILLICO! A 32 yard pick 6! What a clutch play by Lillico, with no time left on the clock in the 3rd quarter. Rashad Tarkenton kick is good! Flint 17, Pomona 9!
4th Quarter: 66 yard kick, Kyle Cobb returns for 25 yards. Nicely done! Flint can’t make anything happen with it though, punt inevitable. Flint DT Ben Green takes Ryder down to the turf (they’re getting pretty familiar at this point), 5 yard loss on the sack. 2 punts. Ryder throws a 37 yarder to John Baker for the longest pass of the game (drive ends in a punt, as usual). W. Perry (is he an autonamed bot maybe?) has the ball knocked from his hands by Pomona LB Bert Macklin; it’s recovered by Pomona DE Vinz Lockkleu for an impressive 26 yard gain. Ryder sees John Baker…right into his hands, 12 yard pass to the endzone, TOUCHDOWN POMONA! They go for 2…it’s in! POMONA TIES IT UP, 17-17! We did not see this coming! Now it’s a football game, folks!
Vinz Lockkleu sacks Bercovici for a 10 yard loss, Flint forced to punt. Punt. Flint’s Cobb squeezes out a 1st down, but it’s not enough – punt again. Ryder makes another pass to his favorite target, John Baker, for 14 yards and a 1st down, but yet another punt afterwards. We’re going to overtime, folks!
Overtime: Kickoff to a punt, there Flint makes a stop at Puntland, Paul DiMirio makes a catch for 12 yards but is tackled by Ragnar Kronen. DiMirio catches a 4 yarder, sees Kronen coming again, falls to his knees weeping and is tackled. Pomona off to Puntopia, Flint still in Puntland, punt, punt, punt, Bercovici sacked by Pomona DE Chidubern Okonkwo for an 11 yard loss. Everyone is tired. Punt. Ohh, at last! Ryder makes a 19 yard pass to John Baker! 5 yard pass to Matthew Vincent! Paul DiMirio manages to stop crying and shaking long enough to pull in an 8 yard pass! Jordan Smith catches one for another 8! Flint 30…Tarkenton takes a deep breath…lines up…47 yard kick…it hits the post and bounces in! 20-17, POMOOOONA WINS!
What a game folks, what a game. These rookies are certainly something to behold. Flint thought they had it in the bag and Pomona stole it at the last moment. It’s certainly going to be an exciting season 2 with all these guys on the field. Lillico and Kronen the highlights defensively, Macklin just behind with a solid 11 tackles and that forced fumble. Kyle Cobb is the RB of the evening with 27 carries for 99 yards and 5 catches for another 30. John Baker is the offensive player of the game with 6 receptions for 118 yards and a TD; many of those catches made the difference for Pomona here tonight. And that last drive for Pomona – nearly everyone had a hand in making it a success – they just weren’t willing to go down after making such a great comeback. Will the Kronen/DiMirio rivalry continue in game 2? Read on!
Game 2, AKA “Jordan Smith, Inconsistent Stardom; Kyle Cobb is Efficient”
1st Quarter: Flint kicks. Are you ready for some puntball!?! Just kidding, Ryder to Pomona WR Matthew Vincent for 16 yards. Penalty on Kronen for encroachment gives Pomona the 1st down. 3 ineffectual rushes by Savea when Typical Newenglander grabs a facemask and gives Pomona another 1st down when they were 3rd and 10; bot coach is NOT happy. Flint 32 yard line – Ryder to Smith and Kamby for another 1st down, Flint 21. 7 yard rush by Pomona RB Darlane Farlane, Flint 14. Ryder scrambles…throws…Jordan Smith with the reception in the endzone! TOUCHDOWWWWN POMOOOONAAAAA! Tarkenton kick is good! 7-0 Pomona in the lead!
Bercovici sacked by Pomona DT Bork Bjornsson for a 5 yard loss, Flint headed to Puntopia. Ryder throws an 8 yard pass to Jordan Smith, and OHH IT’S PICKED OFF BY Safety Isaiah McGinn! What a play! Flint can’t make anything happen with it though and head back to Puntopia to relax. 10 yard rush by Savea for a 1st down but 4 penalties on the Mongeese (2 of which are on OL Lineman Braden Sharp), plus a sack on Ryder for a 7 yard loss by DE Drew Davidson result in a punt and the end of the quarter.
2nd Quarter: 10 yard rush for Kyle Cobb. Jesse Sanderson catches a 4 yard pass but is hit so hard by James Lillico he fumbles – ball recovered by Pomona bot safety. Another penalty on Braden Sharp sends Pomona to Punttown. Nice 19-yard pass by Bercovici to Dustin Evans but yet another punt afterwards. Pomona then punts as well out of solidarity. Bercovici decides he’s gonna try to run the ball for the 1st time and is taught by DE Vinz Lockkleu that he’d be better off throwing it – ball is knocked out of Bercovici’s hands and recovered by Pomona bot linebacker. Pomona finds this shameful and immediately punts. 11 yard pass to Dustin Evans…8 yard run by Eric Kennedy and Bercovici tries it again, this time with better luck; 2 yard run and another 1st down. 12 yard catch by TE Rich Gucci, and then two penalties on the Mongeese get Flint to the Pomona 24. 16 yard pass to Gucci again, 1st and goal on the Pomona 8. Kyle Cobb is the go-to guy for when running really needs to be successful – 5 yard rush, Flint on the 3. Bercovici hands it off to Cobb again…he dives over the center…TOUUUCHDOWWWWN FLINT! Kick is good! Tied game at 7-7! Penalty on Flint and two on the Mongeese (Both on Darlane Farlane) and the 2nd quarter is over. Halftime!

3rd Quarter: Pomona kicks off. Kyle Cobb catches a 12 yard pass for a 1st down, and then Flint heads on down to Punttown. Pomona visits them; Flint has a good time and stays for yet another punt. Jordon Smith makes a nice 16 yard catch from Ryder. Ryder flips it to Paul DiMirio and IT’S INTERCEPTED BY Flint LB JUPITER OAKS! Paul is on the ground…medical teams on the field…ohh, this is bad folks, third interception off Paul in 3 games…yes, we’re getting word now…ohh it’s a rough one folks, Paul’s pride and dignity are both broken in 3 places. He’s on the sideline now, weeping again. Can’t someone give this rookie some TLC?
Flint 50 yard line…Bercovici to Dustin Evans for a nice 14 yard pass. In the air to Fox North…he cuts in! Down the field, 29 yards before a bot safety brings him down! 1st and 7…3 yard pass to Jesse Sanderson. Bercovici scrambles…flips it to Dustin Evans, caught but CB Dermott Lavelle holds him at the 1 yard line. Bercovici hands off to Kyle Cobb on 3rd and goal…there’s a small hole and Cobb makes it through! TOUCHDOWN FLINT! Vanderjagt kick is good! Pomona 7, Flint 14!
Vanderjagt kicks off…nothing of note until 3rd and 1 when Ryder is sacked by Blaster Blade for a 7 yard loss! Pomona forced to punt. It’s pretty short, Flint has it on the Pomona 40 after a penalty on the Mongeese. Cobb rushes for 8 and a risky 4th and 2 rush is successful by Eric Kennedy. 1st and 10 on the Pomona 30, but the running game can’t get going.
4th Quarter: 46 yard field goal by Vanderjagt is good! Flint 17, Pomona 7. Teez Tobin returns the kick for a solid 24 yards. Coach tells Paul DiMirio to toughen up and sends him back on the field – he catches 3 for 3 short passes for 24 yards total, mercifully untackled by Ragnar Kronen. Flint 26, 1st and 10. Jordan Smith with an 8 yard reception. Ryder spies Matthew Vincent in open in the endzone! It’s caught! 18 yard touchdown, MATTHEW VINCENT! Tarkenton kick is good! Pomona closes the gap with 8:14 left to play, Flint 17, Pomona 14.
Kyle Cobb returns the kickoff for a nice 24 yards. Eric Kennedy gets a 1st down out of two rushes, but a Sun Tropics penalty puts Flint on their own 20 for 2 and 25. Bercovici is flattened by a robot linebacker for a six yard loss. Shaken, Bercovici dumps off a pass to TE Rich Gucci…IT’S PICKED OFF BY BERT MACKLIN! Pomona could end it right here, folks! Flint 20, 1st and 10. Quick pass to Jordan Smith…he’s going, going, OOHH, what a hit by CB Darnell Turner just before the endzone. 1st and goal, Flint 1 yard line. Pass to Jordan Smith…he drops it! What a shame! Mongeese penalty, OL Connor MacManus, illegal formation. 2nd and goal, Flint 6. Ryder to Jordan Smith…he drops it again! This rook is either off or on, folks! Ryder pass to John Baker…good for 15 yards! Mongeese take a timeout. 1:20 left to play…Ryder lofts it up…Jordan Smith reaches for it…he’s got it! TOUCHDOWN #2 FOR JORDAN SMITH! Tarkenton kick good, Pomona leading by 7, 24-17.
Perfect kick by Tarkenton, Fox North catches it on the 2 and makes it 20 yards to the Flint 22. Bercovici gets it to WR Ryan Lecavalier for 13 yards. 38 seconds on the clock, Sun Tropics take a time out. Bercovici throws, dropped by Jesse Sanderson. 3 seconds on the clock, pass to Kyle Cobb, 7 yards before he’s flattened by CB Dwayne Barton. That’s the game folks!
Yet another comeback by Pomona, you just can’t keep the Mongeese down! Kyle Cobb gets offensive player of the game with 2 TDs, 3 receptions, and 9 rushes for 39 yards. I would have said Jordan Smith, but he had two drops in the endzone consecutively that would have ended Flint’s hopes early. No particularly outstanding defensive player; Bert Macklin, Jupiter Oaks, and Isaiah McGinn with 5-6 tackles and 1 interception each.
