For each game there will 5 players highlighted, 3 from the winning team and 2 from the losing team. The best/most valuable/most impactful performance on the winning team will receive 3 stars, then the next two top performers will receive 2 stars and 1 star, and so on.
Note: I forgot to mention - I'm not infallible here, I'm sure you watch your own games closer than I do. If I missed someone, I'm open to making changes. (You may have to throw a teammate under the bus though...)
Anyway, here's Week 2:
Chicago Butchers
(27) at Yellowknife Wraiths
(45)
Yellowknife
3 Stars: Orien Drake
10 Carries, 35 Yards, 2 TD, 9 Receptions, 84 Yards, 1 TD
2 Star: Mathias Hanyadi
18 Carries, 89 Yards, 1 TD, 2 Receptions, 14 Yards, 1 TD
1 Stars: Danny Grithead
11 Tackles, 1 Sack, 2 PD, 1 Int
Chicago came out to a surprising lead that lasted until the fourth quarter. But then the Wraiths new runningback duo put a stop to the potential Butcher celebration with 3 combined TDs in the final 8 minutes of the game. Grithead made a huge interception while Chicago was driving to take the lead back with under 5 minutes to go.
Chicago
2 Stars: Aksel Danielsson
42 Carries, 148 Yards, 3 TD
1 Star: Guy Nikko
7 Tackles, 3 PD, 2 Int
With Rose Jenkins struggling mightily (35.2 Rating), the Butchers again leaned heavily on the running game, as Danielsson was in range of breaking the single game carries record (46). Another strong game for Nikko as the Butchers forced Cooter Bigsby into 3 interceptions. Who would have thought Bigsby would have 7 interceptions through 2 weeks, the most in the league?
Colorado Yeti
(16) at Philadelphia Liberty
(7)
Colorado
3 Stars: Alex Hornbacher
1 PD, 1 Int
2 Stars: Mo Berry
8 Tackles, 1 Sack, 1 PD, 1 Int
1 Star: Ashley Owens
29 Carries, 111 Yards, 1 TD, 8 Receptions, 74 Yards
The Hornbacher selection may be a bit of a shock considering the fairly empty stat line. But a true shutdown corner won't compile many tackles if their receiver never catches the ball. Hornbacher's interception came halfway through the fourth quarter with Philly trying to keep it close. Mo Berry again put together a nice day for the league's best defense (you heard me - fewest points allowed!). An impressive 185 total yard day for Owens. Is it just me or is the NSFL starting to look like the DSFL with the heavy workload on some of these RBs?
Philadelphia
2 Stars: Thudd Kassel
13 Tackles, 1 Sack, 2 PD
1 Star: Richard D'Attoria V
11 Tackles, 3 PD, 1 Int
Philly's defense stood toe to toe with Colorado's, only allowing one touchdown. So, it feels right to honor their two top defenders on the day
Arizona Outlaws
(22) at Baltimore Hawks
(40)
Balitmore
3 Stars: Ludiculo Bigby
25 Carries, 97 Yards, 1 TD, 6 Receptions, 53 Yards, 2 TD
2 Stars: Corvo Havran
23/38 282 Yards, 3 TD, 2 Int, 87.8 Rating
1 Stars: Arbin Asipi III
3 Tackles, 3 PD, 2 Int, 1 TD
After allowing 0 points last week, Arizona allowed 40 to this Hawks offense, lead by another strong Bigby performance. League-wide QB performances have been pretty down so far, so this Havran game was actually pretty well above average, despite the 2 interceptions. Andrew Reese had a rude awakening this week, in large part due to Arbin Asipi's 2 picks.
Arizona
2 Stars: Kazimir Oles
4 Receptions, 130 Yards, 1 TD
1 Star: Marc Spector
2 Tackles, 1 TFL, 1 Safety
Spector stopping Bigby for a safety at the end of the third quarter was a big play, and the 54 yard bomb to Oles soon after in the fourth quarter cut the Hawks' lead to 5, but the Outlaws couldn't seal the deal.
New Orleans Second Line
(27) at Austin Copperheads
(24)
New Orleans
3 Stars: Vinny Valentine
7 Receptions, 113 Yards, 1 TD
2 Stars: Marcella Toriki
14 Carries, 86 Yards, 1 TD
1 Star: Mack Arianlacher
5 Tackles, 2 TFL
Valentine and Toriki had solid days and their two touchdowns brought the Second Line out to an early 14-3 lead. Austin's Mako Mendonca was limited to 2.5 yards per carry, and Arianlacher lead the way with 2 tackles for loss.
Austin
2 Stars: Honda Edmond
9 Tackles, 1 FF, 1 FR, 1 PD
1 Star: Rod Tidwell
6 Receptions, 96 Yards, 1 TD
Edmond's forced fumble and recovery in the fourth quarter lead to Tidwell's touchdown which put the Copperheads back in the game.
Orange County Otters
(27) at San Jose SaberCats
(10)
Orange County
3 Stars: Franklin Armstrong
21/30 268 Yards, 2 TD, 0 Int, 119.9 Rating
2 Stars: AJ Lattimer
6 Tackles, 2 PD, 2 Int
1 Star: Johnny Blaze
5 Receptions, 48 Yards, 1 TD
Armstrong had the strongest week for a quarterback, though his running game has yet to emerge this season. Lattimer made life hard again for poor Dan Wright. Tight ends have struggled to reach the end zone so far, Blaze gets the recognition for being the first and only thus far with a TD.
San Jose
2 Stars: Freezer Riposte
6 Tackles, 1 TFL, 1 Sack
1 Star: Quindarius Tyerucker
19 Carries, 96 Yards
As mentioned above, Armstrong was held in check on the ground, and Riposte was a big part of that. Rookie Tyerucker had an nice, efficient day.
