(S26) - PT 2 - You Sit on a Throne of Lies

The upstart Sailfish are off to a tremendous 5-2 run to open this season, and things are looking up in Sarasota. Coming off of an impressive playoff run last season, these aquatic athletes are putting on a show. The most prolific offense in the NSFC and #2 overall in the league, these fish are led by a rookie with a serious pedigree. Mike Boss Jr. has come out guns firing, and luckily for the Sailfish, he has plenty of targets to hit. Despite the fact that they came up short in their most recent contest against the Yellowknife Wraiths, there is no doubt in most fans minds that the Sailfish are for real. Frequent sports talk-radio caller “Carlton from Tampa” had this to say:
“We replaced the league MVP with a guy who might be having the greatest rookie season a QB has ever had in league history. I know we’re still a young franchise but they are building something great here. This offense is insane and Boss Jr just has to not screw up every time he touches the ball, and we have a chance to make some moves in the playoffs. I hate Canada and I hate the Wraiths. I believe in the intimidating spiky sword nosed bastards.”

Clearly, the experts and fans both agree: Sarasota is building something special this season and beyond. [226]

My player is currently having a really slow and not so great start to his career. After seven games in the season so far, my offensive line player currently only has a measly twenty-eight pancakes, and a horrendous three sacks allowed. So, my player is currently a very average offensive lineman in the league, and honestly is close to one of the worst this season. This being his rookie season though, hopefully he can turn it around and have a better second half of the year and improve down the line.

Now enough of about my own player, time to overhype. While my player sucks New Orleans, the team he plays for, does not at all. We are currently 5-2 and leading our conference currently. We have a lethal and amazing defense that is capable of shutting down any team in the league and has already shut down some of the better teams, including a huge 6 turnover game against Orange County. The offense, while not quite at the same level the defense has played, also has so many play makers that if they can get everything figured out, they can be lethal. With a QB, WR, RB, and TE all above 1000 tpe, and some of the younger players on the roster stepping up, this can become one of the best teams in the entire league and can possibly compete for the Ultimus this season.

Now, I’m expecting there won’t be too many hype pieces about the Baltimore Hawks this season. They have been mediocre at best with a sluggish offense. Despite a great leader in Chika Fujisawa (QB), the offensive side of the ball has been plagued with dropped passes and turnovers that have often left their defense on the field for many minutes or for short fields. Yet time and time again, the Hawks defense has risen to the challenge. They have some amazing stand-out performances, with not one but two league-leading tacklers. Ben Stakinpaper leads the ISFL with 73 tackles on the season, followed by Dex Kennedy with 67 tackles. We also have a defensive rookie of the year in the making in Etrigan T. Slayer, who has 26 tackles (11 for a loss), 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery and 2 sacks all in 7 games. Compared to his teammates, Ernest Lover has not had a standout start in terms of stat, averaging only 2 tackles per game. But what isn’t reflected in these stats is the fact that Lover eats space at the line of scrimmage, opening up lanes for the other playmakers on the team. Lover rarely goes single-blocked, often taking valuable offensive personnel out of plays. This makes the selfless Lover a valuable contributor to the Baltimore defensive despite his low numbers in the record books.

You know what? Season is already over. Don't just pencil us in for an undefeated season, get that ink out. The Portland Pythons are unstoppable. Who would even have a chance against us? We've had teams offer us players just so they can get the championship before leaving for the ISFL. But we in Portland love to play it fair, so we rejected all of those. Says something, doesn't it?

But what else, what do we have, 8 rookies from the last draft? Well, that is the top 8 of the ISFL Draft mocked up for you. All Portland, baby, no other option. Teams would be stupid to take someone that doesn't rep Portland at this point, the only problem is, who goes in what order? But you already know having 1st overall in the ISFL this next draft will get you a STEAL if you draft a Python. 

So now you want award predictions from me, huh? Well, take an award. What type of player is it for? Oh, Defensive Player of the Year? We have a few defensive players on our team, rookies even. I bet any of them would fit finely as a candidate for that award. Who am I kidding though, they wouldn't be a candidate, they would be a winner. Just like the Pythons have been so far this season.

You want a hot take? Here is my hot take. Berlin really should be undefeated. Instead, they started out 0-5, and are currently sitting with a record of 2-5. I know it may be the "convenient excuse", but the Fire Salamanders really did have a bad bit of "sim luck" their first 5 weeks. Berlin, one of two recent expansion teams, is on the up and up. The core of the team is very, very young, and TPE totals are only increasing. First overall pick in the S25 ISFL draft, Swantavius Jones, is the quarterback of the secondary with a TPE total of 551. Other young players like Adam Schell and Jeeeeeeroy Lenkins back up Swanty on defense and they only have room to grow. Perhaps more importantly on the offensive side of the ball is starting quraterback Nick Kaepercolin. With 1078 TPE thus far on the season, he is in his prime and should be able to pick up more wins down the stretch.

On a personal level, I think a hot take for me is that you could see a position switch sooner rather than later. With Colorado's secondary either aging out due to regression or potentially leaving in free agency, there will certainly be holes to fill. Not to toot my own horn, but as a max-earning user, cornerback would be a great fit. Still staying on the defensive side of the ball, my swap out of the defensive line would allow new, young talent to get in, especially in time for the new simulation engine.

Its amazing how much can change in a week. When Baron first posted this PT the question about whether the Otters were an Ultimus lock was a lot easier to answer with a yes. After going 1-2 this week I don't think its quite the same situation. They don't even lead the ASFC anymore. In a vacuum I think I'd probably still take the Otters or Wraiths to win the Ultimus at this point. In fact I think we might be cruising to a classic Ultimus matchup between the two. That being said I do think the Copperheads and Second Line have outside shots at taking the top spot in the conference and getting homefield advantage for the playoffs - at least up until the Ultimus. That is a HUGE determinant of playoff success in the ASFC unless you're the San Jose Sabercats. On a more personal note Mendoza - my player - still sucks. Being a CB is super weird in terms of who performs and who doesn't. I've done some testing breakdowns of what makes a corner successful at certain TPE levels in a vacuum but at this point Mendoza is basically maxed so I'm wondering if there's some innate effect of who surrounds a player on defense. Just interesting things to think about.
