I've always found this time of year difficult because of how it highlights the stark contrast between the haves and have-nots. My parents were well off so I never had to struggle in this time, but I know many people and communities that have. My priorities for volunteer work would be homeless folks and animal shelters. Being homeless this time of year fucking sucks, period. It always sucks, but now as it becomes terribly cold (I guess my player is in Arizona, but whatever) it becomes extremely dangerous to not have a place to stay. I would donate as much money as I could to local homeless shelters and if doing volunteer work could bring more attention to the causes I'd love to do that as well. I've been thinking about animal shelters a lot recently (in real life) because I'm on the verge of adopting a cat, and this process has broken my heart at how many animals are out there in desperate need of help. On top of that, humane societies are almost always underfunded and the employees do what they do out of true righteousness. I would volunteer to help my local humane society take care of and move as many animals as possible, and I would love to make a large donation to help them keep the lights on and continue their work with less stress.
Immanuel Blackstone has actually been feeling quite motivated by the political environment lately. And while there is a lot that he feels like could and should be said, he will refrain acknowledging that this site is generally politics-free. That being said, it's the political environment that has led Blackstone to volunteer his time for those who are on death row. Although they've historically been rare, federal executions have been ramping up lately and some statistics show that up to 10% of those on death row are exonerated, not to mention the inhumanity of the death sentence as a punishment to begin with. Therefore, Blackstone will be spending time with those on death row over the holidays. If he is able to meet with anyone who is scheduled to die soon, he will, but it is more than likely that he will have to settle for writing letters to these unfortunate individuals. He would also like to help on the legal side of this issue as much as he is able and so will be looking into organizations which fight to bring United States policy more in line with almost every other civilized nation in prohibiting such a practice. Although he doesn't have much knowledge or experience in the area, perhaps his burgeoning stardom can perhaps bring some celebrity appeal and popular attention to this cause.
Alrighty, so my gm has asked me to help out a bit I guess. What other places to help out some people in need than a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. Coincidentally, I already find myself at these places volunteering many days of the week to bring these people a smile on their faces. Sometimes, some friends of mine will tag along and we will bring in our own dishes of food, but more often than not I go by myself. We are entering the season of giving, so another way to help out people is donating. There are ways online that you can virtually adopt children and buy them food and a place to stay by donating money to organizations. Furthermore, there are many fundraisers around that you can give money too as well. The donations do not have to be limited to money though. Many places and organizations host food and clothes drives where you can bring canned foods and many of your unused clothes. As the saying goes, "One man's garbage is another man's treasure", so even though you may not find value in those items you are giving away someone out there probably could use them very much. And that's what Big Edd would/does to contribute to the community over the holidays.
