(S2) - Weekend PT #4 - Drama!

Years from now when the NSFL's early seasons are remembered one of the most drama inducing situations of it's time will come to mind quickly, the Gregor Clegane fiasco. Those who were there will recall the 10-page long thread of accusations, insults, conjecture, and (very little) support. Clegane had announced prior to the S2 draft that he would refuse to play for any team that was not the Otters. At the time he was considered a shoe-in for the #1 overall pick in S2 being a dominant player, TPE leader, and occupying a scarce position. After his announcement there was a significant split in the playerbase for those who supported Clegane's choice to control his own destiny and those who claimed it was a play for the Otters to gain an unfair advantage by snagging a top talent player like Clegane for a lower cost. In the end it worked out for everybody involved as Clegane went #6 overall to the Otters while some very high talent players like Lavelle and Bjornsson found themselves being selected above Clegane. Still, one wonder what could have been had Clegane never made that fateful forum post, filled with undecipherable metaphors and confusing references. Would he have gone earlier to another tea, given his declining activity? Or would he had fallen to the Otters anyway? We may never know.

With the recent changes in the NSFL, some may overlook that one of the brightest football masterminds of our time, Chet Fische, was just handed the keys to one of this league's most powerful teams; the Colorado Yeti. A lot of people were taken by surprise at the announcement, but when you look at Fische's experience playing football video games and match that with his lukewarm HS Football career as a DE/TE, you begin to understand how this gem was uncovered from the dirt to be displayed as the new face of the Yeti.

Fische has already gotten to work in Colorado, sources say one of the Yeti's biggest division rivals has made trade offers for one of Colorado's star rookies. Fische reportedly didn't get back to the team with a response, which will definitely result in an even more diminished relationship between rivals.

Some claim Fische's savagery goes too far, and may be seen as rude. Other sources agreed with Fische's stance, claiming 'You call up this GM - his first day on the job... you offer some trash for one of their bright gems and you're surprised you've been left in the dust? Psh, get outta here Jabroni.'

The NSFL Head Office made a big splash with the announcement of the Developmental Simulation Football League, and when the GMs were announced, a large concentration of them fell in the Philadelphia Liberty.

The Liberty isn't a very high TPE team, as they are an expansion team made of primarily rookies. However, extremely active rookies like Tyler Oles, Perry Tucker, Paul DiMirio found themselves escalating into GM range. Along with veteran Stephen Harris, the Liberty now have 6 GMs on their team. It's natural that a little bit of tension would arise. It started when DiMirio and Harris planned to make their team the Tidewater Pirates. Excited, DiMirio clicked on the announcements forum...

...Only to see that Oles and Tucker had founded the Norfolk SeaWolves seconds eariler. Crushed, DiMirio and Harris returned to the drawing board. Later, Tucker and DiMirio found themselves in a debate about Coyotes and nuclear submarines. The TE pointed out the coyote's speed advantage, where as Tucker emphasized the weight difference. The bickering continued, mainly about meaningless things, such as who got their depth charts in first (slow and steady wins the race!), or who had their logo ready.

Paul/Winston and TO/Perry in the NSFL: Besties in Liberty; in the DSFL, bitter enemies.

A league wide drama was when Matt James began his hold out. He posted an article from his "agent" talking about what his "client" had requested and said that James felt disrespected by the Liberty GM. The GM obviously questioned what James was talking about when James decided to post private PMs between James and the GM. Many felt this was wrong and inappropriate to post private PMs but James said it was in response to false figures presented by sources. Many of course wrote their own articles about the hold out. The hold out ended when the Wraiths and The Libery made a trade, sending James to yellowknife. Many questioned whether or not James would hold out in yellowknife as well. This was proven wrong though, as James decided to sign a contract with the wraiths. Many still talks about this as case of a player acting like a whiny brat, and others said it showed that the Liberty were a bad team. 4 weeks later though, and the wraiths are one of the best teams in the league while the Liberty are regarded as one of the worst, with only 1 win in the season. Maybe James had planned this all along.

For myself, being new to the league, means most of my drama would be internal. The biggest struggle I had was deciding it was time to leave College and pursue a career in the National Football League. After several tryouts, private practices, and the few meetings with head coaches, I landed myself on the practice squad of the San Francisco 49ers. After playing on their team through the preseason and the first week of the regular season, I decided I may have better opportunities if I made myself eligible for the national simulation Football League. Not knowing if I was even going to be claimed on waivers was a Gamble I felt I needed to take, but to my surprise I was picked up relatively quickly by the Orange County otters and filled an immediate need on the depth chart as wide receiver. In my first game for the honors I was able to score my first career touchdown and help them secure their first win of the season. Unfortunately. My magical touch ended in my next game in week 4 when we lost a close one and our record fell to 1-3. Next, I learned that the front office of the Orange County Auditors is making some drastic changes and I'm not sure what's in store for myself for the team moving forward. Although there aren't many aware of the drama I've faced and the roller coaster ride of life I've been on for the past 2 weeks, this is a life-changing decision that I've been faced with and have not regretted.

The decision to expand a league is not one to make lightly. There are a lot of impications and there will be a lot of split opinions on the matter, especially in a league so young. It's not really uncommon to see leagues grow in the first years so it isn't that foreign of a concept but there will always be concerns. The important thing is to not hurt each team's activity due to the expansion and to have expansion rules that will allow the 2 new teams to still be competitive early. As we have seen with the start of Season 2, both expansion teams are struggling a little. both have taken very different paths in building their teams however so it will be interesting to see which method is more successful. The expansion has not affected the Yeti too much activity wise seeing as they managed to pick up a but load of actives in the draft. I suspect that most well managed teams were also not affected much. I am quite concerned with the new proposed expansion with the DSFL seeing as there will be a lot of teams added at once. that said, I'm excited to see the plan HO brings forward for the expansion and I hope they get it right. I think the future of the league depends on it.

Drama? That's easy man. Last season when the Outlaws were winning and doing their thing, our good buddy Stormblessed was our leading receiver and doing pretty well. Some of us thought he would lead the league in yards, even. Well, as we were on our way to an underdog championship, Stormblessed got up set with management and pissed off a lot of people in the locker room with his debby downer attitude. Unfortunately, even in the midst of all of the chaos, we had to keep him if we were going to be able to win the championship. Personally, I didn't really mind Stormblessed as I have been around sim leagues enough to just be annoyed but not actually care about what peeople say. Some on the team, however, were afraid that he was breaking up the chemistry and thus he had to be dealt to the Las Vegas Legion when they offered a decent package for him. I think that Stormblessed had the right intentions, as he wanted us to be better. But his attacks against people and tirades within the locker room made some very angry and when part of the team feels threatened by one guy, it might be time to let him go.

You don't have to look very far to find drama in the NSFL. That's not to say it's always malicious, but rather, just players being divas.

Immediately what comes to mind is Matt James, and his holdout against the liberty until he was signed by the wraiths. Another case of a new and unproven player asking for ten percent of a team's salary cap.

To be honest, it's a little mundane to see every other player shouting from the top of the world that they're the best of the best and that of course they deserve an earth shattering contract deal. You know what, though, it works for some of them, so I can't sit here and pretend I don't understand why. We all want to be big names with bigger banks, but I think it's important to remember that there are merits to being a quiet player, too. What about the relief it brings your GM to know that they drafted someone who will let their work speak for them, or the surprise that'll fall across people's faces when you're the one leading the league in touchdowns and you know that you're a big name because of talent and work, not because you're a reality TV star.

It was not a huge deal but the expansion of two teams and the expansion draft created a little drama in people around the league. Many were in loss of how this is going to occur and how the league is going to set up the expansion protection list and what players each team will protect. As one who was exposed and taken by an expansion draft I did worry a little on how this is going to work since just after the first season I was already moving teams. But it is honestly better for the league to have more teams. I'm not sure how other felt on this but I did hear some grumblings about it. Some teams have even began to try and diss some of these expansion teams even though they are just starting out and are trying to build a successful team. Though most is playful humor there does seem to be a little sprinkle of egotism of being better than those teams. As the league grows in age I imagine we will have more teams to build on and hopefully the embrace is a little more friendly that it has been. But its all exciting times for everyone as of now.
