Okay, so would I show up to a little kid’s birthday party? Absolutely, I’d feel bad if I didn’t. That’s the good news. The bad news is that apparently the real Marlon Brando is kinda a bad person, which means if i need to stay in character.... well, i might not be great for parties. Okay so let’s imagine what exactly an awful actor would do at a little kid’s birthday party. First he would eat all the cake, candles and all. But he wouldn’t tell anyone, so like they’d unveil the cake, just for it to be not there. Marlon Brando would lie and say he had no idea what happened to it, but like there would be cake all over his face and his mouth and teeth would be stained blue from the icing, so everyone knows it was him. Now you could argue “Oh he’s an actor, so maybe he could pull off the lie and somehow convince people that maybe he didn’t eat it, but here’s the thing: Marlon Brando wants them to know. He’s an evil little bastard that wants everyone to know he ate this little kid’s birthday cake. And that’s how my player would make this little kid’s birthday memorable
Duke Cheeks recently received a hand written letter in the mail from a young fan asking him to come to his 8th birthday party. The young lad lives in the suburbs of San Jose and claims o be Cheeks biggest fan. The party was set for a Sunday, so Cheeks figured why not go to a young child’s birthday party on his off day. He decided to surprise the boy, Joe, and decided to call in a favor to a local bakery that he gets breakfast danishes from on the regular. Cheeks had them bake an enormous cake that he could store himself inside for the surprise. When the day came, he had the bakers deliver him to Joe’s party inside of the cake. When Joe’s parents started to try to cut the cake, Cheeks popped out and scared all of the children. After the fear subsided and the parents were talked out of calling the police, Cheeks was able to explain who he was, and Joe became ecstatic. For the remainder of the day Cheeks played in the bouncy house, had water gun fights, and taught the children proper tackling techniques. It was an exhausting day, but Cheeks said it was worth it to see the joy of a young fan.
While I'm not currently on the team I will say the New Orleans Second Line after a rough start is on the rise and people will be surprised when we are in the playoffs. After switching from 3-4 the 4-3 the defense has been killing it and that's just going to get better as the players continue to earn TPE. The offense is already a beast with Ben Slothlisberger throwing it all over the field to the likes of Adam Spencer, Ben Bodenhamer, and the greatest wide receiver to don a Second Line uniform in Ed Barker.
Now onto my current team in the Tijuana Luchadores. Not a great start at only 2-2 through the first four games and Sir Peter Jackson has been pretty nonexistent with 0 interceptions so far and only 4 PDs through 4 games. Hopefully the whole team can step up and get back on track to get back to the Ultimini after we ended up losing it last season. I know we have the talent to get back there. We have tons of players at or near the DSFL cap including our QB and his TE on the offense as well as a CB and LB on the defensive side of the ball. I just hope that I can get some interceptions as right now I'm not even in the running for any awards this season.
I think that the biggest disappointment is a pretty easy one to pick. After a surprising run last season that ended on the losing end of the Ultimus, the Austin Copperheads are easily the biggest surprise to me. They’re sitting at 1-5, tied for the second worst record in the league with my Chicago Butchers. Last season they probably overachieved a bit and exceeded expectations, which makes this fall look so much more drastic. I think that they are a better team than some of the teams that are above them in their division, but there just doesn’t seem to be a way for them to get back into playoff contention. They’re in a tough division. The biggest overachieving team is a bit harder to pick out, though. I think that it’s gotta be the San Jose Sabercats or the Orange County Otters. They both finished with a worse than ideal record last season, and neither team looks to have made any real improvements to their team. I’d argue that San Jose got quite a bit worse in some ways, because of their reliance on players around S22, along with the fact that they lost one of the highest TPE wide receivers in the league. It’s good to see them both doing well, but look for them to come back down to earth a bit later in the season.
Berlin Fire Salamander Cornerback Jeeeeroy Lenkins as he was back home in Edinburgh, resting between his team's recent triumph over the usual (albeit improving) lacklustre Baltimore Hawks and preparing for the ASFC favourites that are not underperforming (yeah I am talking about you Austin) Arizona Outlaws. It was just your typical summera day in Scotland, started off with the rain pissing down, followed by the win blowing a hooly, some snow and finally some lovely sunshine in the early afternoon. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until the days post arrived.
Lenkins had received a letter from a young lad who has been a big fan of Jeeeeroy Lenkins since he entered the league with the Minnesota Grey Ducks. The lad had just finished listening to Jeeeeroy Lenkins (and the rest of the turtles new podcast) if you have not listened to it you should check it out) and had sent Lenkins an invite to his birthday bash. The lad was called Ryan Negs and his party was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles themed. Ryan explained how much it would mean to him Lenkins popped by and Lenkins is not one to disappoint a fan, let alone a kid. Lenkins attended the party, signed autographs for the parents and handed five year old negs custom fitted nunchuks engraved with the Berlin Fire Salamander logo.
Written option (Complete 1):
- We're now a quarter of the way through the season and the league is abuzz with with both surprises and disappointments through the first four games. Which team do you think is currently overachieving and which team do you think still has a chance to bounce back as the season progresses and why?
So as always at this point, some people's season long predictions are completely ruined and others are looking like smart cookies. Anyone with Arizona and Sarasota winning their conferences are looking pretty good as of right now. I don't think Arizona is a surprise at all after last regular season record, if anything I would be surprised if they weren't at or right below the top. As for Sarasota, I could see picking them to win it, but also could see them falling somewhere in the middle of the pack by the end of the season. Both teams are relying on top tier scoring efforts.
The two teams sitting in second in each conference are a bit of a surprise to me, neither team was great last season, but have come out to a strong start. Jan Jose and Colorado, the real question will be can they continue on their path and make the playoffs? Both teams have similar points scored to points allowed, having both scored less points than they have allowed.
The next two teams are two different teams as far as predictions went. I think everyone expected the Berlin Fire Salamanders to do well again after almost making it to the big game last season. They are currently tied for second and they have a really good points for versus against, so they seem poised to make a run. The Orange County Otters though, I did not have them listed as a playoff contender this season, but so far they are managing to sir squarely in the hunt. They haven't allowed very many points, but they also don't score very many....
As for the two biggest busts so far, Austin and Chicago, both are fighting for the worst record on the season.
