Hello, welcome to an eight part series called "S3 Preview", that previews each team's S3 roster! It also gives a season record prediction and their projected team MVP. Without further ado, let's get started!
We'll be starting with the NSFC first, and our very first team is the Yellowknife Wraiths, S2 NSFC Runner-Ups.
Yellowknife Wraiths
:
The Yellowknife Wraiths arguably the best offense in the league. The big question with this team is its' defense, which was the league's 6th best last season.
At quarterback, they are led by Chris Orosz. Orosz is coming off a QBOTY season where he threw for 3657 yards, 21 touchdowns, a passer rating of 84.1, and a completion percentage of 63.6. These numbers are among the best in the league, and there's no signs of him slowing down in S3. While his TE, Ricky Maddox went defensive, he still has two of the most potent wide receivers in the game, Josh Garden and Bailey Cook.
At running back, they have S1 MVP, Bubba Nuck. Nuck had a regression year, only rushing for 1041 yards. Just a season ago, Nuck led the league in rushing yards. While it was a disappointing campaign in S2, Nuck looks to bounce back in a big way. As we all know, the Wraiths had the best offensive line in S3 and is bringing back the same unit there.
At wide receiver, they are led by a two-headed monster of Josh Garden and Bailey Cook. Both of these guys are dangerous threats and help each other out, as their opponent has to have not 1, but 2 elite cornerbacks to have a chance at stopping the passing game. And even that doesn't slow them down. They combined for 2298 receiving yards last season and are just going to get better with a higher workload.
At offensive line, they have the best unit in the league that includes Mat Akselsen, Jogn Floggity, Matt James, and draftee Francis Lamoreux. This group is the group that had the most pancakes and allowed the least sacks in S2, and is bound to improve with the addition of Francis Lamoreux. The Wraiths sent three of their offensive line to the pro bowl in S2.
On the defensive line, they have two of the most talented ends in the NSFL, with Ricky Maddox and Bork Bjornsson. Maddox recently switched positions in order to help out the defensive line in need of some desperate help. They also picked up defensive lineman Eidur Gustavsson through the draft. We should expect Bjornsson to play at his original position as a DT due to the depth at DE.
On the linebackers, they have two dynamic linebackers, each extremely different from each other. One of them, Kevin Cushing, is a coverage linebacker, a tackle specialist. He's going to be cleaning up any missed tackles for the Wraiths. The other, rookie Brice Boggs, is a speed rusher. Boggs will be providing some extra pass rush and will likely be blitzing often for the Wraiths. He has great speed.
On the defensive backs, their squad is solid. With S2 #1 overall draft pick Dermot Lavelle, the Wraiths have a shutdown corner who can make big plays, and have two decent safeties in Alex Hansen and Marcus Kane. While this group doesn't look two intimidating right now, just wait until Marcus Kane develops.
At special teams, they have one of the better units in the NSFL. They have arguably the best kicker in the NSFL in Archibald Booter, who made 93.3% of his FGs, a league best. They also have dangerous return man Levon Novel, who returned two kicks for a touchdown in the regular season and one kick in the playoffs. While not talked about much, this man is doing great in his returning duties.
Projected record: 9-5
Team MVP: Josh Garden
