Hey all! This is a new series that will look at some statistical quirks. There a few things that have made me surprised this year, and I wanted to look into these stats. I'm curious to see what you guys think for these, so please leave comments and let me know what you're thinking!
In this article series I am going to find the stats and discuss what's going on, and why these stats are amazing. I'm also going to look at the players involved and try to figure out why the stats is happening. Obviously the sim has some randomness but if we can look in depth we can see why certain things are happening. Finally I'm going to look at whether these statistical trends can continue. Each article will focus on a couple stats and discuss them.
The top four offensive linemen all have no sacks allowed
THE STAT: This is REALLY surprising. Last year Tim Pest was the only lineman to not allow any sacks, and even then he was third or fourth in pancakes. This year, Angus Winchester, Tim Pest, Gregor Clegane and Micah Hendrix are all in the top 4 in pancakes and all have no sacks allowed. When we're gonna be voting for Pro Bowls it will appear as though Pest, Winchester, Clegane and Hendrix are all shoe ins for the Pro Bowls.
WHY IS IT HAPPENING: I don't know why this year is different than last year but I have a few guesses. First off, these guys are four of the top guys in TPE, and they each keep getting better and better. Obviously the high TPE guys are going to be the best, and in Offensive Line that is how it seems. Another reason seems to be that offensive lineman have the most stats to pump TPE in. So while defenders will soon level off, the best offensive linemen are going to just keep getting better and better and better.
CHANCES IT CONTINUES: I see this one continuing as far as these guys all being on top. I mean these guys are awesome, and they will likely finish within the top 6 in pancakes. BUT will they all finish with no sacks allowed? I don't think so. It would be crazy if all of them didn't have even one fluke play.
The top two receivers in yards and TDs are on the same team
THE STAT: Robert Phelps and Bradley Westfield are having incredible seasons. Phelps leads the league in receiving touch downs, and is second in yards. Westfield is leading the league in yards and is second in touchdowns. These guys are also first and tied for second in receptions in the leagues. So yea they've been awesome. Even in the best offenses in NFL history this has never happened. These guys are putting together an absolute incredible season.
WHY IS IT HAPPENING: Mike Boss is fucking awesome. Some idiot recently argued that Scrub Kyubee is the best quarterback in the NSFL. Clearly that argument is insane. Boss recently whipped the Hawks in his tour de force this season. Phelps and Westfield are both super talented, and their QB has taken perfect advantage.
CHANCES IT CONTINUES: I think there's a very good chance they finish at the top 2 in these stats. The otters throw the ball WAY more often than anyone else in the NSFL (number 2 in pass attempts, King Bronk, is closer to number 7 Scrub Kyubee than to Mike Boss). If the Otters keep up with this volume I have no doubt these guys will continue this crazy season.
That's it for the first of the statistical quirks series. Again please let me know what you all think about these two stats, and if anyone has any stats they suggest for the next one please let me know!
