As someone who was around at league inception and was part of getting this league kickstarted. I have been disconnected from the league as a whole for nearly 3 seasons. I like the idea of the league and my grievances are definitely different than most of the people on this site. I've spoken in detail about my love for sim leagues like the GOMHL and the more casual feel. I understand many people here feel good about the league as it is now. But I have come to maybe bring up some quality of life changes and some things that might improve the state of the league. Nothing too drastic but things that might make the league more palatable to some people and more interesting to others. Take what I am about to say with a grain of salt as, of course, it is my opinion. But I would like to start a discussion here to improve the league for the better.
1. Live Streams The most interesting part of this league and the thing that sets it apart from so many other sim leagues is the use of live streams for the games. This is what really brings people out and it is hidden in the discord, where some people don't dwell, and in threads in the NSFL Regular Season subforum. This really needs to be stressed. This is a selling point. This is what brings people together. Advertise this better. I was tossing some ideas back and forth with others. Running a youtube and archiving each season and it's games seems like such a cool idea. People could go back on an NSFL Youtube and search out any game they would want to see. Want to watch yourself in your 3 touchdown game? You can do it.
Also, make the sims more visible. Top of the forum. Live streams need to be the main focus of this league as it's one of it's biggest selling features. Don't think of it as just a part of the sim experience. The live streams ARE the sim experience here.
2. Equipment This is a problem that transferred over with the SHL style of sim league. Equipment is frankly too expensive. You should be paying maybe $3,000,000 a season for equipment. You're already working your ass off twice a week to get your PTs in and making sure you don't miss those. Why should you have to pay close to $9,000,000 every single season to purchase a small boost in TPE? Some will say things like, "Just don't buy it!", or "that's what it's for, to set the hardcore from the casuals!" All I have to say is that it's a huge money sink and encourages players to gouge their GMs for cash. I'm fine with paying for equipment but make it reasonable. $9,000,000 is more than a lot of players make in two seasons.
3. Community We are all here for the community. The biggest part of these sim leagues are the people you share your time hanging out with in discord or in the sims. We need to foster a more adult atmosphere around here. Trolling has gotten out of hand at times. While that's bound to happen in anything online, I think we can strive for more. There is a distinct difference between harmless playing and malicious trolling. We need to strive to punish these more harshly than we currently do. I have very little room to talk as I was part of something very trollish lately that maliciously affected the league. But by saying this I mean that everyone, including me, needs to hold their actions in a more adult way and face things in a more mature manner. I think the first action for this would be set discipline rules and a committee that does nothing but rule of over the top actions.
4. Site Rename I must admit that in the first season of the NSFL I was pretty indifferent to the name. I definitely didn't think it was a good idea but it seemed like what Baller wanted to roll with - so I just let it slide. Now as we approach the 6th season for the league we need to think about a better name for the site. Posting up "Join the NSFL!" in multiple subreddits and football forums looks is more offputting than interesting. National Simulation Football League sounds a bit better but we need a name that can properly be placed into acronym form without feeling like we're talking about /r/spacedicks. Maybe it's just me but it's felt like it's not the best way to represent this site.
Some people may approach this as me just bitching. I know very little will actually come from this post. But I needed to share some of my thoughts on the current state of the league. I could be persuaded to be part of this league again. I like quite a few of the people here. I have met some great people here. But we need to address some glaring issues. If you disagree with me. Feel free to respond. If you agree, feel free to comment. Let's keep it adult.
