Well the S13 draft is over and done with so I wanted to take the time to cash in on that double media draft since I’m in a big Texas sized hole with the bank! Here’s my take on the first round and my thoughts on why a lot of teams passed on me until the Colorado Yeti took me in the 3rd round.
1)
Johnny Snuggles - CB
Now I’ve seen this user around awhile now and it was surprising to see him step down from being the Hawks general manager but good on the Wraiths to take advantage of the situation and get a top corner for seasons to come. I like the archetype and I’m definitely afraid to go up against Snuggles in the future since he’s going to be a top cornerback by the time I get to playing in the NSFL.
2)
Benson Harris - DE
I can see why they took Benson Harris at number 2 after taking a look at the Second Line roster section. The team didn’t have any big TPE guys at DL besides Lo Rax and Grayson Kuusela so Harris was an obvious choice. I think Wraiths could have also gone with Harris too and would have if Snuggles wasn’t up for selection as a Hawks general manager. Harris was one of the top earners in this draft class and he’s already got max speed and strength so he should make a big impact for the team in a New York minute!
3)
Spencer Castle - CB
So Second Line picked again here, but traded Castle to Baltimore for Dan Schneider. This looks like a good pick and trade for both sides I think. Second Line gets to replace some defensive backs that left the team last season with Blackford Oakes and Axel Hornbacher gone. I remember Schneider from the S12 Pythons group and he’s a solid safety. Baltimore has a solid corner in Achilles Honda already so adding Castle sets them up well for the future.
4)
Lucius Kane - WR
This one was a bit of a head scratcher for me, but maybe someone knows something I don’t. I thought Arizona had Viggo Squanch and Trey Willie from looking at their roster section and they already had a good group of runningbacks and two tight ends for their receiving group. Maybe you can’t turn one of those TEs into a wide-out in the game? It’s that or Willie is retiring so I guess those reasons could explain why they picked up Kane for a WR3. I do believe they whiffed it here by not picking David Ginsburg because by the looks of their roster they need an another active linebacker. Alex Selich needs more help than Barnaby Earl and Thomas Kane because those two aren’t cutting it.
5)
Blake McCargue - OL
The first offensive lineman taken in a draft since the early days of the league. I heard he was coming up and had good TPE earned this season, but this is another head scratcher for me. The Liberty are like the Outlaws and needed more active linebackers because K.J. Becker is the only one I can see in their roster section. Maybe the Liberty thought McCargue might position switch for them? He won’t be able to make a big impact since most teams are buying bigger offensive lineman with their salary cap.
6)
David Ginsburg - LB
Ginsberg finished at 152 TPE this season so I think he earned at a decent rate. He can’t replace Winchester at the position but will make the roster next season if he earns another hundred or so TPE I think. The Otters drafted well again and it’s amazing to see how well they maintain their competitiveness. Ginsburg has a high ceiling as a Balanced linebacker and that build will pay off if he stays active. It’s one of my favorite defensive builds and probably my next player’s build. Good pick here, but I’m biased since he’s a teammate of mine on the Pythons.
7)
Alex Frost - K/P
The Hawks lost their long time kicker Turk Turkleton and Raven has recreated as a quarterback which I’m excited to see. That S14 class of quarterbacks will be fun to watch. I think Alex Frost is one of the better kicking prospects to come out of the DSFL since the last few haven’t panned out so well. He’s active and has a sweet as sweet tea Balanced kicker build with 80 in both kicking power and kicking accuracy. He could probably go semi-active and still be an effective kicker. I like this pick a lot and I think Frost will do great things and follow in Turkleton’s footsteps.
8)
Johnny Blaze - TE
The last pick of the first round is another one of my teammates, Johnny Blaze. The gigantic tight end joins the Otters and his user isn’t a stranger to that team so it was an obvious choice for them. 137 TPE isn’t quite starting material yet for the Otters so he’s probably coming back to the DSFL and I’m crossing my fingers for that! Blaze has good hands and speed and he makes a great wide-out as well as tight end. I think Otters got a big steal here since Blaze will earn at a steady consistent pace and is familiar with the team.
So there’s my first round thoughts! Now time for me to see which NSFL teams didn’t pick me and to look at the Colorado Yeti for my future.
Baltimore Hawks
They were one of the first teams to contact me with the normal scouting message and I understand that they have a lot of people to get through to figure out who’s a good fit for their team. They have Childish Gambino at 867 TPE for their quarterback and he’s S8 so regression doesn’t even start for him in a few more seasons. The user is pretty active so I understand why they weren’t even looking for quarterbacks in this draft. I always liked the Hawks because I love birds so I was a bit bummed to not get picked here. I know they still have a big window of time to win more Ultimus trophies and I’m not going to be able to fit into that right now.
Philadelphia Liberty
Pretty much the same boat as the Hawks here. Liberty have Adriana Falconi at 706 TPE and S10 so she’s got plenty more time to progress and keep the Liberty going on the offensive side of the ball. The user enigmatic makes beautiful graphics and is very active on the forums. I’m not surprised that they didn’t contact me at all and don’t hold it against them since they already have a great quarterback for a long while.
Yellowknife Wraiths
Their GM is their quarterback so activity won’t be an issue there most likely and Ryan Applehort has 1197 TPE so he’s getting ready for regression which will hit in a few seasons. They still have big window of time, but are still gearing up their offense. I don’t think I’d be able to compete for playing time against Applehort so I’m not surprised they didn’t contact me either. I’m sensing a general theme here with lots of these teams with quarterbacks already developing or peaking.
Arizona Outlaws
Now this is an interesting team! I don’t know when the draft actually took place since I heard the general managers do it ahead of time, but with Kevin Fitzpatrick retiring early at 934 TPE the Outlaws are going to be scrambling for a quarterback soon. I was kinda hoping to land an immediate starting spot in the NSFL and seeing how this situation played out had my hopes up. I know I can’t replace a quarterback with that much TPE but I know that I wouldn’t retire on a team that needed me like that. They have another season to try and get one of the S14 quarterbacks so we’ll see how it goes. I never got contacted by these guys either.
New Orleans Second Line
Borkus Maximus is a decorated quarterback in the league at 1392 TPE. He’s S6 and on the decline but he racked up a ton of TPE so he’s got a lot of seasons left in him if he decides to keep playing. I think he could as a pocket passer with max attributes and New Orleans doesn’t seem to need a quarterback for at least 3 seasons by my estimates. I love the branding of this team and would have loved to have been drafted here to back him up, but I don’t think they are interested in a quarterback just yet.
Orange County Otters
I retired with Cole in my first go around so I was surprised that they contacted me to be honest. Gus Showbiz is an S9 quarterback at 868 TPE and he’s very active on the forums. He earns a decent amount of TPE each season compared to his peers and he’s got a few more seasons before regression starts so the Otters still have a window which never ends. Otters would have been a great place for me so maybe they might be in the cards for my future career in the NSFL. I’m not surprised that they didn’t draft me though.
San Jose Sabercats
Another team that follows the same pattern as all the others in the later bloom years like the Liberty and Hawks. Joliet L. Christ was a great DSFL quarterback for the Pythons and has 703 TPE for an S10 player. He’s very active as a player and has jobs in the league that means he’ll be around for awhile. I didn’t get contacted by this team like most and I’m not surprised. He’s still got many seasons ahead of him and will stay active so there was no reason to draft a quarterback now.
Picked by Colorado Yeti
I was pleasantly surprised that the Yeti picked me. After breaking all the quarterbacks down though it made absolute sense because McCormick and Showbiz are the two oldest quarterbacks in the league at S6. They will lose the most in regression for the following seasons and that should give me time to get up to a decent level to start for the Yeti in a few seasons. I don’t mind waiting and this organization has some great leadership. I enjoyed chatting with dropbear the most and they really ignited my interest again since they took a chance on me. Hopefully I don’t let them down since they scrub Luke Boechler did.
