Here is my pick by pick analysis for some of the Season 16 Draft.
#1
select RB Sam Torenson
Grade: A-
Sam Torenson is one of the best earners in a pretty small season 16 class. The Butchers secure their running back of the future. The reason this pick is not an A or A+ is because the Butchers already have a solid back in Ricky Adams. Adams is inactive (hasn’t posted since May but was seen on the 27th) but he’s also at a decent TPE level. I do understand the selection of Torenson, however, as he was so far ahead of almost everyone in terms of TPE. Torenson could develop into a franchise running back for the Butchers and that may be what they need to sustain success in this league. He probably will have a really solid rookie year, with how strong the Butchers are looking and the fact that they will probably have to lean on the run game a little bit, at least to start the season, so that they can ease Rose Jenkins into the pace of the NSFL. I could also see Torenson doing another year in the DSFL to get up around 500ish TPE. Great pick by Chicago that could play out big in a couple seasons.
#2
select LB Blake Faux
Grade: B
Chicago uses pick from their blockbuster trade with the Copperheads to select Blake Faux. For their sake I hope he works out because they traded away 2 consecutive firsts for this man and those draft classes are shaping up to be very strong. Faux is a great player who is 3rd in TPE for players available to get drafted in the first round. The linebacking core for the Butchers looks great, with 4 young studs; Stokely, Lewis, Nikko, and now Faux. It’ll be interesting to see how these 4 players mesh together, assuming that Chicago runs the nickel. These 4 great players won’t share the field very often. Two of these players will have to distance themselves from the other two and I believe that Blake Faux has the ability to do that and be one of the featured linebackers for the Butchers. The only reason this pick is a B is because he is yet to distance himself from the other 3 linebackers he plays with. Maybe I’ll revisit this after the season and see what’s changed.
#3
select WR Laslo Fourty-Two
Grade: A
With Colorado locked into selecting Wolfie McDummy in the second round, it’s probably a good idea for them to get him a receiver to pair with him for what may be their whole careers. Fourty-Two seems like he could be the guy to do this. The young wideout has accrued 206 TPE and that’s without his offseason update. He is active on the forum and the discord. McDummy may struggle early on but it’s through no fault of his offense. Fourty-Two will be playing across from the reigning WRoY in James Bishop and that should free him up for some open looks. If McDummy can not be awful I could see Fourty-Two contending for ORoY. With the young talent the Yeti have, maybe they could go a couple seasons of not being the worst. I believe in you Colorado, you’ve made some good picks, end your status as the NSFL’s premier lolcow.
#4
select CB Dermot Lavelle Jr.
Grade: C
Dermot Lavelle Jr. will be playing his games 3000 miles away from where his father did, but just for one season. The reason this pick is graded as a C is pretty obvious. Despite junior’s obvious talent, he had some pretty outrageous demands before the draft, which are the main reason that he fell to the 4th selection. Based purely on TPE he is the best player in this draft class but his demands really diminish his value. He will only sign one year contracts and that’s my main problem with this selection. He says he will reevaluate every season but with the way that the Copperheads look I doubt he’ll stay very long. Austin gave up their first rounder for a one year rental of a 350 TPE CB who is under 80 speed. I know speed doesn’t mean anything but with as slow as junior is it might be hard for him to keep up with NSFL players. For every interception he gets from playing behind a receiver, there will be a play where he gets toasted downfield by a speedy wideout. I see why Austin made this selection, I just think I would’ve gone a different direction if I was running the Copperheads I would’ve gone a different direction.
#5
select TE Peter Larson
Grade: C+
I’m a little disappointed about Larson position switching to tight end because I was excited to see him duke it out with Easton Cole for the starting job. Larson is a decently high TPE player who should be able to help out the development of Cole. He fills the gap left by Chase Jensen’s switch to play safety. He is decently fast and as long as he continues updating he should develop very well alongside the Ultimini champion Easton Cole. He hasn’t put any TPE into catching as far as I can tell but that can be developed, as I said. Now instead of them competing a la Rose Jenkins vs. Ryan Leaf Jr. they will be working as a unit to move the ball down the field. The Copperheads will most likely be pretty bad, so that may stunt the development of some of their young players, especially new creates. I hope for their sake that they selected a player here who will remain active even when his team isn’t successful.
#6
select DE Chad Maulolo
Grade: B+
The Wraiths finish off building S.L.A.M. with the selection of “M”. Maulolo just had a solid season for Palm Beach where he won DLoY and is an active player at a position of need across the league. He’s not a max earner but he is active on Discord and earns quite a bit of the TPE available. By the end of the season he should be a true starting caliber defensive line-man at the top level at least strictly in terms of TPE. He is at 217 TPE as of his June 29th update and for a defensive line-man that might be enough to perform well and maybe he can contend for DRoY even though defensive ends don’t always do great in the sim. Unfortunately for him, he has to go from the warm and nice city of Palm Beach all the way up to the frigid Yellowknife. At least the winters in Montana should have prepared him for the cold and the small town he grew up in should be reminiscent of Yellowknife.
#7
select DT Alberto McGwire
Grade: C+
The Liberty draft purely based on need here by selecting McGwire. He was a midseason create so he doesn’t have as much TPE as some of the other guys who are in this class. He is another player who isn’t quite a max earner but also isn’t phoning it in with his TPE gains. Defensive tackle is a great position for a player like this because you can be successful at a relatively low TPE count. Philly needed a defensive tackle really badly, as McGwire is the only one on their roster. He should be able to make a contribution in his rookie year as a starter on a good defense. In a stronger class this pick wouldn’t be graded very highly but because of the lack of depth in this draft, McGwire is a really solid pick.
#8
select RB Mako Mendonca
Grade: B
Mako Mendonca probably could’ve gone top 5 had he created earlier. He joined Palm Beach around week 6 and because of that his TPE count it quite a bit lower than where it could be. Austin needed a second running back for when Dick Wizardry eventually gets tired. Mako Mendonca is a good enough all around back to be the third down guy for the Copperheads. Austin should probably try to lean more on their talented backs. Mako fell off with his TPE earning a little bit during the offseason but he seems to still be active. He just did an activity check on 6/30 so at least he’s gaining some TPE. Austin manages to snag a very solid active player at the back end of a mediocre draft.
#9
select CB William Tell
Grade: C+
I was going to grade this pick pretty low because his TPE hadn't gone up on the tracker but I think it’s just because he hasn’t been updated yet. He’s earned quite a bit of TPE this offseason. He gained 44 TPE and that’s without equipment, which he should be able to get with the money from his contract with San Jose. The Sabercats don’t really need more defense but cornerback is a position of need for them, the only two on their roster are from this draft. At least the two guys they grabbed are solid and should be able to fill the corner slots for a couple seasons. I expect Tell and Rowland to have very strong rookie seasons as that San Jose defense pressures QBs and stop the run, giving them some opportunities to pick off bad passes.
#10
select TE Joshua Palmer
Grade: B-
I can’t tell exactly how much TPE Palmer has, as his update pages are a little confusing, but I do know that he is active, especially on the discord. Any receiver is a great pick for the Yeti as Wolfie McDummy will need the best support group he possibly can have to not completely collapse in his rookie year. I like the guy but a 350 TPE QB probably won’t have the best sim luck. Palmer can develop into a reliable target for the Yeti, even though he hasn’t put any TPE into hands yet. He is decently fast for tight end and should be able to get past linebackers, though he may struggle if a safety is guarding him. Pretty good pick by the Yeti.
That concludes my draft grades for the first round. If you disagree with me, that’s fine, please leave a reply on what should be different<3.
