With the recent influx of interest in the NSFL from college athletes, it should be no surprise that many around the league are making noise about potential expansion. There are of course several questions that come along with such talks, sustainability, expansion cities, new league rules to name a few. To begin we'll be taking a look at eight proposals for a new team, and one team that could be looking to relocate.
San Diego
San Diego is an interesting city, in some ways it is very similar to other west coast towns, and in other ways so very different. Close to the border and dotted with beaches, San Diego is an idyllic vacation spot for many who can't bear the colder months in the north. This provides not only a unique opportunity for the NSFL to garner a larger international audience, but also a place to hold events like the Ultimus Championship, Rookie Bowl, and All-Star games. The people of San Diego are quite a loyal bunch, and have expressed adamant interest in having their own franchise, some even going so far as to say they'll help pay for it. The consensus around some league offices is that of all potential landing spots, San Diego ranks among the top candidates for a franchise, names being thrown around include, The San Diego Coast, The San Diego Thunder, and San Diego Sharks.
St. Louis
St Louis always seems to come up on lists like this, no matter the sport, no matter the league, the people of St. Louis are always asking for new teams to root for. It should not come as a shock to see it here too, as much like San Diego, the fans in St. Louis have been wondering for years when they'd be getting an NSFL team. Located nearly directly in the center of the country, a team in St.Louis could easily garner fans out of the reach of some of the larger fan bases. According to some sources around the league, the fans might finally be getting their wish, as names like the St. Louis Pioneers, St. Louis Tribe, and St. Louis Stallions have been mentioned in the last few months.
Portland
Some may find Portland a surprising addition to the list, however those around the league know that there is quite a market for the NSFL in Oregon. While most fans in the state claim themselves to love teams like the Colorado Yeti, and San Jose Sabercats, there is a growing number of fans asking when to expect a franchise closer to home. While Portland is often seen as a quiet city, full of hopeful entrepreneurs and alternative musicians, their sports fans are some of the loudest out there, perhaps one day their voices may finally be heard and we might see the likes of the Portland Grizzlies, Portland Timber, or Portland Wolves.
Houston
While the state of Texas already has both NSFL and DSFL representation in the form of the Copperheads and Birddogs respectively. The community of fans in Houston cannot be ignored, their tenacity and perseverance has caused some league officials to begin consideration of bringing a team to the area. Though it is more unlikely than some others on this list, Houston could very quickly become a favorite among all NSFL fans. Many on social media have adopted names such as The Apollos, Stargazers, and Nebulas in lieu of the cities long history with space travel.
Orlando
Orlando is a unique entry to this list, while they do not have the most lively of NSFL fans, the market in the area is not something that should be easily ignored. In a similar vein as San Diego, Orlando could be used as a hub for the leagues events, seeing as the city is sunny and picturesque almost all year. One thing that could be finding its way to Orlando regardless of a team being their is the NSFL Rookie Draft. Some have been asking for an event similar to other sports leagues, that fans and players alike can attend and watch in person. Common names for an Orlando based team include, Typhoons, Cyclones, and Waves.
New Mexico
New Mexico is growing market in the eyes of many, what better way to capitalize off this new found momentum than by sending a new franchise to the Land of Enchantment. It is still a bit too soon to tell whether or not New Mexico is looking for a sports franchise, there seems to be an increasing number of fans online making noise. One of the most interesting prospects of a team in New Mexico are the options available, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Roswell could easily make for a great addition to the league. It will be interesting to watch the community grow in the coming years, don't be surprised if you one day see the Albuquerque Roadrunners, Santa Fe Phoenix, or Roswell Aliens.
Duluth
Duluth, Minnesota is the smallest market on this list, but that doesn't mean it hasn't peaked the interest of some around the league offices. The prospect of an NSFL team in Duluth seems unlikely at first, but when you really take a look at the fans devotion to the DSFL team the Grey Ducks, it only makes sense that they'd want to be represented at the higher level. Another interesting thing to look at, is the number of fans the Grey Ducks have around the country, even some around the world. It would be quite a dramatic move for the league to take a team from the DSFL and move it up, but the future is never certain.
Toronto
Toronto is the city that is the most unlikely to receive an NSFL franchise on this list, despite the league insistence on garnering a larger international audience, even with teams like the London Royals and Yellowknife Wraiths. Of course, this is to the detriment to many fans in the city that are asking for a franchise, for years the people of Toronto have wanted more representation in major sports leagues. The city is another like many on this list that has been growing substantially over the last few years, and it is baffling to some that the league hasn't expressed more interest in the largest Canadian city. With all that being said, Toronto is still a city with an expanding market, so it will always have at least some credit on these types of lists. Some names for a Toronto based team include, The Toronto Moose, Freeze, and Polar.
Relocation: Chicago > Brooklyn
Finally, a look at what is no doubt the least likely scenario you'll see here, though the prospect of a Chicago team relocating isn't new, there isn't a whole lot of reason for them to jump ship this time around. However, if they were to move again, they'd be looking to move to a large market, and there's few markets larger than Brooklyn, of course being one of the five major boroughs of New York City, some argue whether or not it's a city at all. Aski anyone native to the area and they will tell you Brooklyn has taken on a culture of its own, and the fans in the area are loyal to a tee. Brooklyn is clearly somewhere the league should be watching closely, as it could be the easiest place to find a following almost immediately, many think Brooklyn will be getting a team one way or another, whether that be through relocation or expansion. Only time will tell whether or not we'll be seeing the likes of the Brooklyn Gladiators, Bulldogs, or Tigers.
All in all, it's nearly impossible to tell what the future holds in store for the NSFL, though it will be interesting to see where it goes with all this new found interest. Perhaps when and if the league does expand, they won't go to any of the places laid out before you, though only time will tell.
